Far Cry 3:Tattau Annihilation! Ubisoft saves the best for last with the game of the year

2012 is a great year for gamers, new IP like Dishonored , free to play fare a la Planetside 2, Hawken and Mechwarrior Online as well as your staple Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, WOW , Star Trek Online MMOs going free. Thousands of indie releases competing easily for interweb space as the AAA fare from uber publishers. The excellent Borderlands 2, Halo 4 and Assassin`s Creed 3,Max Payne 3, the awesomely devilish Hitman Absolution.. and too many more to mention...including the Wii U system I have not even had time to touch ...

I thought many of these games may be the game of the year whilst playing them , but that was before I got to play Far Cry 3 .  Ubisoft Montreal are a team at top of their game. And Far Cry 3 has had fans keeping the faith way before the first bit of actual code warmed their gpus.. Witness the sell out of the Insane edition of Far Cry 3 ..around this time of year I usually expect Assassin`s Creed collectors editions to sell out , this year Far Cry 3 has the most collectible and sought after limited editions..I need to change that panel when I have time...

I played the game on a Lenovo X220T wearing the 100 inch head mounted display of the ST1080 and the Cinemizer OLED and on the Google Nexus  7 with Splashtop THD ..

here is how the game runs using Intel HD3000 hardware : these are low settings by the way !

and this is how Far Cry 3 plays on the Google Nexus 7 streamed from the same laptop ( 3 floors away)

And now we have gotten the basic testing out of the way , lets play with the sandbox in an early mission..this is a game where you hunt with stealth or open aggression

You can see in the mission I just played above why this is the game of the year for me ,other games have stealth and action like Metal Gear and Dishonored but they are set in closed confined game spaces, whereas some games have open sandboxes like GTA , Just Cause , the Saints and Prototype series none of them put all of this together in the way that Far Cry 3 manages and in a living world where anything does and can happen. There are scripted events but also wonderful chaotic random events, the mission was cool above but the best part was where at the end I just happened to park my jeep to admire the view and the bad guys turned up suddenly all the skills I had subliminally learnt in the 30 minute mission before clicked and within a few seconds I had finished hunting down the enemy hunting me with the skills the game taught me..or let me think it taught me..that is the power of the tattau! No two gamers will play the same mission the same way and that is the mark of a truly great sandbox game.

As I stated before Ubisoft Montreal and Massive (the Ground Control devs )software are teams at the top of their game.  Far Cry 3 inks its own  tattoo of power on the crowded sandbox genre with an open world in which stealth and open aggression are interwoven and   flow with such grace that you may find yourself wanting to skip the otherwise excellent character monologues and just get on with becoming the most fearsome predator in Far Cry 3 `s jungle... queue Grand Master Flash.... or you could just take pretty pictures with your in game camera

It is great to be surprised once in a while, I did not expect the Insane Edition of Far Cry 3 to be the most sought after collectors edition this year and I did not expect the game to run so well on even a humble laptop, the game runs at tremendous speed so whereas you may feel your hardware creek under pressure to render environments in Assassin`s Creed 3 or Dishonored or GTA ,in Far Cry 3 everything is so smooth you may want to stop and take in the scenery and wild life , whereas in other games your scenery tends to stop and admire you whilst your hardware catches up to render the next frame...  Now all I need to do is learn not to put spaces either side of commas and get Tridef 3D working so I can play the game in 3D ! More to follow!

Oh and if you like this go check out the Hunter series on the Amiga ... the finest sandbox game of it`s time...and the pre cursor of the sandbox genre ..
