Sony PS Vita set to rip the core out of Apple`s casual App gaming revolution

I could write one of those terribly negative posts vs the PS Vita , you know the kind that ponders what place is there in a world of iOS and Android fart and watered down Unreal Engine quick time slide shows Apps .. for a dedicated gaming handheld with dual analogue sticks and games as close as to a full home console as possible.

But fellow gamers the Sony PS Vita is set to be an astounding success .

Really.. the key to the Sony PS Vita`s eventual success is in the staggered Sony launch schedule ......

The Japanese launch hit the Nihon otaku last year , and left them bemused , as missing was the great Monster Hunter , Gundam iteration , JRPG and of course the teenage dating games most beloved by Salaryman trying to alleviate the stress of 0 holiday , 20 hour work days ,stopping off in a capsule hotel for some respite.

This first wave was really just to seed the Japanese market ,  to remind Japanese gamers that there would eventually be more Monster Hunter , more Gundam , JRPGs and teenage dating games , but unlike the 3DS which got its Monster Hunter dose at that time this would come later.

The launch of any hardware Japan side always lights up the radar of EU and USA Sony fans , but with the PS Vita fans have not resorted to importing in great numbers , and this is because they were waiting for the 2nd wave :

The launch of the PS Vita  from it`s inception has been weighted towards the  USA and EU markets , when this second wave hits next week with the UK launch of the PS Vita , this is when the core gamer , that Sony has targeted since the days of it's first grey fliptop , will go to work for Sony .

Sony hardware is always introduced to and by core fans. In the UK core fans are people who can remember inputting Basic into their computers to play Pong on their black and white TV. These guys are the Sony footsoldier , next week there will be one in your class (your teacher) , on your bus , tube train , sitting across from you in some recently wified burger or coffee joint and they will be wowing a crowd with near console quality gaming , playing games on a portable with dual shock precision , and this will set in motion the third wave:

Any Sony hardware is always propagated by core fans all the way back to the Walkman , you were either the cool dude who first had it , or were influenced by that early adopter into getting it . So  we pay £550 for a launch PS3 , we pay £799 for a Sony HMZ T1 , and we will pay close to £400 for a PS Vita , with a a few games ,memory card , case , etc . But any Sony hardware becomes successful  when the core start to influence the casual gamers into buying the hardware , a cut down cheaper lighter version of which will probably be here in time for Christmas in Japan and next February every where else .

This is the way of Sony , they give core gamers what they want , and the core then deliver in time through exposure the casual gamers .

The beauty of this device is the control, the real console game experience , and the potential back catalogue of AAA Playstation , Playstation 2 and PS3 games and there PS Vita exclusive versions ( Disgaea 3 for instance)  that are going to have fans pick up a PS Vita somewhere down the line . We are almost 3 generations into iPad and 4 into Android OS tablets , and whatever their power , display size and multifunction uses you still cannot beat a real game developed by a real software house. And there definitely is a place for both in your life , especially if you can fork out £800 for an iPad 3 with accessories or 2k for your phone contract!

There are lows though , the browser needs improving , but this will come , the PS3s is a lot better than the Xbox 360s after all , and its improvements will eventually trickle down to the PS Vita .

Get your UK PS Vita from Zavvi or Game now  , oh Game are being coy about shortages  , but there will be plenty to go round .

Remember this launch is for the core , and like the Rohirrim there were never many , but they get the job done when taking on the Android orcs and the Dark Lord of iOS (R.I.P. dude) .

Playing the Mass Effect 3 demo with Kinect on Xbox 360 INCINERATE!

And here we have the 2nd half of the Mass Effect demo played with voice commands using Kinect , there is actually no reason this feature cannot be included in the PC and PS3 versions .This is just voice recognition code after all . The way you play changes completely , and it allows you channel your inner Paul Atreides ,like the God King you can kill with a word and and Fremen chicks dig ...

But this is Mass Effect , and you also now get to speak the choices that you make out loud , adding to the immersion , but the most fun can be had in coming up with shouted squad based combos check out the video below:

EA Valantine's Day Massacre 50 % off Crysis 2 Battlefield 2 Medal of Honor Bulletstorm

How does EA do Valentine's day ? Well more in a Valentine's Day Massacre than the choccies and flowers style. For with 50 % off Origin downloads of almost all EAs FPS games , the only red decorating your EA Valentine experience will be the bits of gib and virtual slomo evisceration decorating your pc monitor in the likes of Bullet Storm , Battlefield , Crysis 2 and Medal of Honor .

The real bargain here is the classic Medal Of Honor Airborne . Which was the zenith of EA trying to do something different to the military fps , bringing to a sad end the open ended multi route gameplay that EA was imbuing the Medal of Honor Series with. You see time was when MOH was the Call of Duty of its generation. But like all FPS games , it was really just based on a linear series of tunnels mapped with scenery and interspersed with set pieces and cut scenes . Which sounds scarily like COD now doesn't it Treyarch and Infinity Ward ( whats left of you )?

Then EA got brave , and the last few WW2 set MOH games had open ended maps with open ended objectives ,and routes , not just a linear corridor fps game with set pieces , and this for me makes them far better than the later MOH and FPS games that are all aping COD which of course apes the original MOH formula! In Airborne the game environment is key , a town is a town , you chose your entry point , multiple battles are going on in multiple locations you chose how and which order to tackle them , this actually gives you a far better impression that you are in a real world situation than the lovingly textured and conceiled cookie cutter corridors of later linear FPS games like the latest Medal of Honor and Call of Duty.

So I urge you to check out Medal of Honor Airborne , it is there on origin for just £2 and then get back on EAs case to stop aping COD or Battlefield with MOH and take it back in the direction of a sandbox multiple route fps that Airborne is thus far the finest example of.

Today is Major Sheppard Day time to Kinect to Mass Effect 3 on 360 and demo the PC version

Been shouting commands at kinect all day on the Xbox 360 Demo of Mass Effect 3 , and it is so intuitive and accurate , it changes the game completely not just in a most Clint Eastwood in Firefox vein but more than that  I found myself  channelling my inner Paul Muadib  ..you know when Usul no longer requires a weirding module!

Yes like the God King of the Fremen I can not only kill with a word , but can command others to at the same time .... or just simply change weapons . heal , or change the tactics of my squad . all with voice and faster than all those button pushes or mouse clicks.

I have not seen any sign of head or hand gesture tracking , simply because I was too busy shouting multi character /party  combos with various mixes of incinerate , concuss , warp and singularity , even lobbing grenades using voice. Combine this with your joypad for shooting and you ARE a lethal killing squad not just an individual.

Now pay attention Molyneux , this is is what we wanted from kinect , not Milo !

PC  fans need not despair , for ME3 runs faster and smoother on your hardware than the 360 version.

Easily . The ME3 engine is far better optimised for today's hardware , and that hardware includes Intel GPUS!

I have just been playing on a Windows 8 Intel HD3000 and i7 powered Lenovo X220T , and it is so fast ! And it claims this is not optimal hardware!  With Kinect for PC not far off it would be impressive to see the PC version get a Kinect update or at least allow speech commands through a mic or head set  .  Check out thegameveda demo play through part 1:

Realm of The Mad God free on Steam now prepare for Coop MMO Bullet Hell Shooter Heaven

Realm of the Mad God can be had free here

Unlike Sony and Nintendo , Valve has been quick to jump into the Free 2 Play arena , a necessity  brought on by the free Apps that dominate iOS and Android. The number of Free to Play games on Steam increases almost on an hourly basis , or so it seems , and not only continues to cement  Steam's dominance and reputation, but also adds kudos points to everyone's  favourite digital game delivery service by championing Independent developers, assuming said developers make some money some where along the way ,but hey  games like Realm of the Mad God are priceless works of art and on  Steam that means literally priceless.

Why iOS and Android mobile tablet gaming is set to reVitalise dedicated gaming console industry

Far from killing off traditional dedicated portable games console , the casual tsunami of iOS and Android phone and tablet gaming is set to breathe new life into  Sony and Nintendo hand helds , and home consoles .

You see in GameClub everybody plays , and the more people play thanks to iOS and Android the more they want to play , and this eventually includes core gaming . You may start on the soft stuff with your Angry Birds , but you will eventually be introduced to the hard stuff , and find yourself trying to beat your first Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus sub boss for the nth time when you hit that core gaming zone ...and you are transformed from casual gaming grub to a beautiful ninja core gaming butterfly ( add harder analogy as appropriate)

The reality is competition breeds excellence , and weeds out obsolescence ,  Sony took the console gaming crown because it had competition from Sega and Nintendo in the 90s , and Sega and Nintendo owned the video game arena since the early 80s.  That level of formidable competition is what made Sony work harder . And later Microsoft work harder to steal some of Sony's success.

Now we have a similar situation with the so called dominance of video gaming by iOS and Android devices , this is not to be feared this is to be applauded , for this level of competition is what will kick Nintendo , Sony and Microsoft where it hurts .. in the  bank balance .. and make them strive for better results.

Had it not been for Apple`s success , there would be no indie scene of bedroom coders , scoring millions in sales with their fart apps , these guys and girls are going to progress to coding for other platforms so everyone wins in the end.

And there will be casualties , but that is the way of the PC and Video games industry , which thrive on success , think how your PC has been changed by the success of Apple , or how Windows 8 is so touch based following iOS success on iPad , in the same way we will see tablet and phone gaming success reVitalise (pun intended )  video gaming on dedicated hand helds .

There is one thing business types never get , that gaming is for life and every real gamer wants to play every game on every available platform . They gotta catchem all , and most importantly if your platform fails you cannot blame your rivals success for that failure  .. you have as they say ..been pwned!

Windows 8 Consumer Preview takes a bite out of Apple on an Atom/Ion powered Joojoo tablet

We control the horizontal and the vertical ... of your joojoo Windows 8 Consumer Preview running tablet that is  ... let's take a look at how the joojoo and Windows get on together ....

So much has happened this week in our world of tech and games , the Raspberry Pi launch (and order delay just like the good old days of self assembly Sinclair ZX80s) , the EA and GAME mess up of Mass Effect 3 , and another delayed preorder announcement of the siliconmicrodisplay ST1080 ... as well as of course the very quiet launch of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview .

In between sourcing some UK Mass Effect 3 N7 Editions , ordering 2 ST1080s and crying over the  sold out Raspberry Pi  I managed to test out and install the Windows 8 Consumer Preview on two of my Windows 8 tablets... on the lowliest ( but still mighty fine ) Atom N270 and Ion powered Joojoo to the fastest an i7 Lenovo X220T . Both machines fyi have been running Windows 8 dev preview for several months , and both have identical Runcore msata SSDs running the OS .

And without further ado here are my first impressions .

We start with mine joojoo tablet  which looks nice in Landscape mode but shines in the  Portrait orientation which makes for a very nice Pinball machine as you can see:

Earlier.... a Windows 8 tablet  taking a bite out of apple

the closest Apple kind has come to a full OS running tablet .....come on Mr Ives....
that deaf dumb and blind (and dead ) Joojoo tablet sure plays a mean Pinball with Win 8 CP!

As soon as I saw the Pinball game I had to turn the Joojoo round ,et voila : using it this way is something you are meant to do , you can also play in landscape as I will show you later , but for now check out the Windows 8 Customer Preview in portrait mode , along with new and shiny content selection panel ( insert fancy correct name that cost several million dollars to come up with)  The pint is the experience is intuitive , no one told me the pane was there , I just felt it should be and it was ... hey I'm a PC and I made Windows 8! ......Amazing to think people used to have to read telephone directory sized manuals to operate an OS none to long ago......

As you can see many more Apps are designed to actually exploit the portrait mode , incidentally when using the 16:10 1366 by 768 joojoo screen in this manner I get a lot more work done scrolling through 50 ebay items at time or as you can see below I am able to see more news and data plus it really does feel more like a magazine or news paper than all those dinky 9.7 inch tablets ....some of which cannot even run Flash ...tsk tsk....
the left thin selection pane shows all open apps the right larger pane shows you present choice

All these Apps are live and working simultaneously you can instantly flick from one to another  , multitasking   is even more impressive in the landscape mode more on that later....
Windows 8 in browser less browsing mode

Traditionally you would boot up a browser search for your content and observe it in a browser pop up.
Windows 8 App delivery system gives you a totally browser less experience bringing your content to you without you even typing Google , now that is evolutionary! Apps can still track your data though ... there is a long term plan there somewhere...

the revolution will be tabletized .... Hiiiiiii YAAAAA!
the App Store App in portrait ... there's too many of them...and free too!

and

And now let's check the landscape orientation out ....

let's play and watch some more ....

notice something?

The Browser is dead :Windows 8 represents a seismic shift in the way we connect to our media    at the moment many of reach our media through a browser window , whether it is watching videos or social networking  you get there on a PC through a browser.. with Windows 8 use you can find yourself doing everything you would normally get up to but without ever having resorted to typing anything into google or bing or whatever browser you were enslaved to , thus Windows 8 can be a totally browser less experience.  Google should worry.... As Windows 8 delivers content through the OS App interface your need to even go near a browser window is gone ....

When your video games and social media are so well presented and attainable without worrying about installing java , flash etc who needs a browser any more check out some multitasking below : Oh and of course all your browsers still work , but you are not going to use them so much . Side effect :  no more ads or pop ups and nothing nasty downloading without you knowing it ...although you will have to keep an eye on the Apps you select and what they have access to ...  yes tablets of Android and iOS have had these features for ages , but it is Microsoft that is giving consumers what they want , and they want the desktop experience to be an evolved tablet and phone experience ...with no Apple type excuses that we do not want touch enabled Mac Airs and Pros ....

Installation is effortless , no USB or DVD rom ISO nonsense just go to the site and download the installer then does everything , including keeping your personal files . No need to uninstall Windows 8 dev preview. You just need to make sure you have 20gb free on the install partition.

The joojoo I use has 4gb DDR3 , a 64 gb SSD , an Atom N270 and desktop nVidia Ion , it
can run any classic pc game quite happily and even the likes of Star Wars the Old Republic .
Windows 8 just looks stunning on this thing , a couple of years ago now , I told  the CEO of Fusion Garage , that he should have launched with this configuration and with Windows 7 , he could have done this at a time before the iPad launched, I also emailed him to ask if his next tablet could be based on Windows 8 . Instead Fusion Garage went into the custom Android OS business that yielded the Grid10 , which killed the company dead . In attempting to ape Steve Jobs , by not listening to customer demands and feedback Fusion Garage went two for two with failed tablet launches. There can be only one Steve Jobs....

Meanwhile with the arrival of a gift from Microsoft the Windows 8 dev preview last year suddenly every joojoo owner had a  8s booting  Windows 8 tablet in their hands. with a tidy desk top Ion accelerating proceedings , and a fancy msata ssd to run the whole thing from ...

Microsoft you see had been listening to all the Apple customer feedback that Apple had not , being too busy making billions and building it`s UFO headquarters.... We love the iPad , but why can`t we have a full OS tablet  with the power of a desktop or laptop ,and most importantly the freedom of a desktop ... And that is what Windows 8 gives you , a portal to your games ,social and business web haunts , a market of 500 million laps and desks onto which to forward your own Apps if you should chose to do so.... And a lot of those are going to be Apple Mac Airs ,Pros , and Book Pros ... hands up who bootcamped Win 8 last week?

Last week millions , yes millions of Apple Mac Air and Book owners will have installed Windows 8 Consumer preview only to wish that the screens on their silver dream machines could handle multi touch like those magical iPad devices.....

On the joojoo , which is just Atom based , the Windows 8 Consumer Preview runs mighty fine , and the 16:10 screen ratio with a 1366 768 res looks stunning and is unique , no one is going to come out with an Aluminium shelled 12.1 inch Ion powered tablet again . Of my 4 PC tablets this one is the most visually striking even if it does have the lowliest hardware. Plus it is thin and light enough to hold , in portrait and landscape mode .  And they said it could not even run Flash...!

If Windows 8 runs at this speed on Atom powered hardware from 2 years ago , then things look great for the up and coming generation of specially developed tablets . Clearly though if you are running Windows 7 or Vista on your netbook or desktop you are going to be delighted with Windows 8`s speed and features.

In a few months though you will own a Windows 8 tablet for the price of a netbook , and this is where Microsoft is going to bite Apple hard ,  it is very easy to produce even a sub
$300 tablet that will run Windows 8 .. I know I have been using one for 4 months...

The beauty is that the already highly optimised and scalable nature of Windows 8 means YOU get to choose your hardware , you could have the fastest ivy bridge , quad gpu desktop running this booting in 3 s off the ssd of your choice , and you could run the same OS on your atom powered joojoo , and have access to all your apps and media across platforms.

With the announcement of an Arm based iPad HD on March 7th the race may be on to install Windows 8 ARM preview on  Cupertino's magical device .... more Win 8 CP demos to follow on the i7 Lenovo X220T and the dual screened Acer Iconia 6120
