Windows 8 Release Preview :it's 7 screen 5 tablet surface computing time @ thegameveda

Windows 8 Release preview arrived at around 10:30pm my time yesterday , and I have been installing it on 4 very different tablet and slate PCs . I left 3 machines running simultaneously installing the new OS ,after first installing it on mine Joojoo ( tradition.....tradition!) and the whole process was smooth from start to finish , the installation will of course destroy ALL your current data so back up before you start or do what I did and use it as an opportunity  spring clean all that gunk data off your ssds....

With what amounts to a 6 screen surface computer , I set about foraging for new features and testing the speed , from Atom powered joojoo , to i3 powered Libretto ( ok neutered i3) , through the first gen i5 GMA powered beauty that is the Acer 6120 ,to the i7 HD3000 powered Lenovo X220T .

For me what you see in the above picture is  the desktop form factor of the future with all your tablets laid out flat just like pieces of paper or dare I use French so many open cahiers... I will of course be finding some use for a 6 screen 4 tablet surface computer at some point .. but right now this is my lazy way of testing 4 tablets at once and comparing the experience on each .

I love the speed as you can see from Atom to i7 Win 8 runs nice with almost whatever hardware you throw at it , note the GPUs powering this are Ion , GMA and HD3000 , imagine what real dedicated GPUS could do ...

The Libretto is in there because recently someone from Microsoft hinted they might do something about the 1024 768 limit for Apps , if they could run at 1024 by 600 , millions of cheap net book devices would run Windows 8 Apps too . And hardware manufacturers could throw those screens into dirt cheap Windows 8 x86 and ARM tablets...Or into expensive dual screen ones like the Libretto ...You see although it is correct that there are 500 million or so Windows computers out there , a significant minority are going to fall below what I see is a completely arbitrary and fixed resolution for Windows 8 Apps , why not give people the option to change the res ? Angry Birds on a phone for arguments sake plays just as well as it does on a high res tablet. And Angry birds can run in Chrome on the Libretto at 1024 by 600 in a browser so why can't a Windows 8 App ? The Libretto of course still runs all your desktop programs , IE10 .Chrome Apps  , turns heads and burns hands with a minimum of effort . I am going to test further re the locked resolution issue over the next few days but right now I am suffering Win 8 Release Preview tablet overload....

The 7th screen and the 5th tablet I used in this test  is of course the new iPad taking pictures and making movies

Windows 8 allows you to sign in and sync all your tablets and computers so this set up can easily become a 7 screen surface computer with each tablet doing some chore for you .. beats resizing windows on a multiscreen desktop powered by one CPU for me too , and gives touch fanatics 6 screens to play around with.. all you have to ask is where you want to go next , have 1 screen telling you the Weather , another the news , a dual screen reading a blog , whilst writing into another using a pen , and with your iPad buzzing the lot taking pictures uploading and making videos .. this is multiscreening  ,multitasking ... you can drill down each Win 8 device all you need , and access data across all 4 Win 8 tablets and your iOS iPad ( with Splashtop) or through the cloud..sorted as they say round these here parts.

The  stand out feature , one that I dreamt about as a dual screen tablet fanatic , is the ability to right swipe the Charms bar onto EITHER screen , and left swipe Apps onto either screen as well as you will see me discover in the videos below . All Apps now look far more professional , news and video Apps also look gorgeous in portrait , check them out below . IE10 still has problems stalling , installing Chrome is the best option , but having both is great too!More to follow but for now check out the videos ...me I am off to pack my 6 screen 4 tablet surface computer away ..wait I forgot the iPad .......pain !
