Dell Streak 16GB Wifi Tablet Phone for those who like Android with their Tablets

Its nice when a company launches a product in the UK first , fear of  the Cupertino Massive having nothing to do with anything I am sure

A NEW SEALED DELL STREAK TABLET

 +
THE OFFICIAL FOLIO CASE

+

THE OFFICIAL SCREEN PROTECTOR

why Streak well here is the official blurb

Streak is a 3G tablet with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; so you can use it as your phone while enjoying web browsing and media playback on a bigger, brighter screen.
The 5 inch WVGA display has a 16:9 ratio optimised for websites; so it’s great for viewing web pages or streaming videos on the move. There’s no need to squint at content or stretch and pull windows into view.
Streak has a front-facing camera and a powerful 5 Megapixel lens with autofocus and a dual LED flash. We are really impressed with the quality of the photos, and how easy it is to share your creations via MMS, ™or Twitter™.
You can use the tablet as a full Sat Nav device, its large, crisp screen makes landmarks really easy to spot.
In short, Dell Streak is a slim, lightweight tablet that can be used both as a phone and as a brilliant entertainment device. It’s great for apps, media playback and web browsing, yet remains small enough to easily carry with you throughout the day.

Toshiba Libretto W100 Dual Screen windows 7 tablet living the Courier dream

Toshiba's 25th anniversary gift to the faithful includes the world first dual screen tablet ,running windows 7 no less. It is great to see a concept pc actually being released , and this one reaches the UK on August 19th , according to Toshiba UK . Real use videos ,you know the kind that Apple hires top ex tv show cop actors to voice over ,are now available :(sans voiceover!) chase friends on two screens sort your weekend out on dual screens a new way to travel with 2 screens and plan your leisure with two screens Although in the UK the Libretto W100 arrives on the 19th of August , it will be tested read played around with by Toshiba techs , for research of course, for a week before release to the iPad ennui and Courier resurrectionist party faithful in extremely limited quantities. Toshiba have a dual screen tablet running a full os ,a 62gb ssd and more screen real estate than many laptops, and every tablet in the near future bar the colossi that are the Kno and MSI dual screen tablets ,that Mr Demille would have happily placed in the Hestonators warm live hands .... the real innovation here is showing Windows 7 multiscreen capabilities, its something that is underused unless you are a desktop multiscreen user ,now you can do the same with something you hold in your hands , and as the hardware is open , you could apply your own os or touch screen layer , from jolicloud, meego, android, eventually chrome os,etc all without nuking the machine or voiding your warranty. Windows 7 clearly has a future with touch and tablets , and as hardware improves the gimped phone os that are excuses for gimped functionality of our magical Ipads will themselves just become an app within the full blown os. If Microsoft can manage to make Windows Mobile 7 synergistic with Windows 7 adapting both to work together they will have a distinct advantage over the closed off phone and desktop OS from Cupertino. Imagine switching on your Windows 7 phone or tablet  and being able to drag a document from your desktop to the phone or tablet or flick a picture from your tablet onto the desktop screen and syncing wirelessly ,with the OS handling the transfer and no store to sync through, or  using the touch screen functionally of mobile windows over the full blown windows 7 os on a device like Toshiba Libretto W 100. The result is  windows 7 becomes multi form factor across phones tablets and pcs .

This may be why Microsoft is pushing software over rushing to develop an iPad killer .Traditionally an omnipresent  software model is the key to their dominance and the beauty is Microsoft software is not locked to one hardware platform , or even form factor. This is the rate limiting step to Apples present progress. So soon we will have not only windows 7 PCs but  vending machines, bus stops ,  phones and tablets .   The W100  is the first of many such innovative  tablets using Windows 7 and that also  means no flash or browsing problems.

The slatewar is on and rebellious open hardware tablets are slipping through the grip of those would enslave you to downloading paid for gimped apps. So now slate Padawan you can chose to stick to the closed [Apple,Android, webos] do as your told ethic, use a cloud based slate like the joojoo , or follow the path of a fully trained operating system like Windows 7 on the Libretto W100 and the many Windows 7 slates just around the corner.

Playing ,burning, blogging and having fun with with the Toshiba Libretto W100 the worlds first dual screen tablet and PC

Let me tell ya the Toshiba Libretto W100 has many a standout feature now that i have put it through its first days of use .

Not least of which is the fact that this is the first slate /tablet that i can type this blogger entry from. Sorry iPad and Joojoo don't give good blogger.

It may sound strange but the best way to think of the Libretto W100 is a miniature version of  that multiscreen  l33t pc sitting faithfully next to you. You know the one with 12 not so silent cooling fans , recycling a healthy amount  of your breathable air , and negating the need for any other form of heating your home.

Just like your uber l33t rig  there is fan noise it runs super hot , blows warm air , which is nice when its cold , but these are not issues for you have asbestos fingers , your`e used to heat and noise being indicators that your tech is being adequately cooled.  Heat leaves the Libretto , whereas the otherwise supercool and silent iPad has been rumoured to overheat and lockup. And the joojoo likes to warm its surroundings too but that is to be expected with such a large screen.

As it is this blog entry is being typed from one of only 50 Libretto W100s in Europe at this time ,  using Blogger is a feat only barely possible using html on my iPad and far simpler to do than using my joojoo which does not allow cut and paste.

The  much talked of  full and split keyboards are not the only important additions that the W100 brings ,where the libretto really shines , and most surprisingly is the virtual trackpad which really elevates the Libretto W100 beyond the simple media consumption of rival tablets.

The trackpad allows you to use pixel precision in clicking on windows buttons and links , so unlike other tablets you need never loose sight of where you are clicking, and the size of your fingers is negated. You know the  iPAD users frustration of trying to zoom in on text to click between text and edit or add missing letters etc , well you can navigate down to pixels with the virtual trackpad which has 3 buttons ,and you can re size it  too. Oh and its perfect for playing games ...

Now those of us that use the iPad and joojoo miss several aspects of keyboards ,with the Libretto W100 , you get cursor keys ,pgup and fn keys , so now you can move anywhere in text and on screen ,again with precision. No need to retype entire words or addresses just navigate with arrows to the precise point ,this mundane yet essential feature would bring much joy to the text pecking masses on the other slates.

The wireless n speed is very fast , amongst  slates the iPad is the slowest , and ios power conservation can frequently cut signals and reconnect, the joojoo is lightening fast and does not have as many cutout problems , but it is the Libretto W100 that is the fastest and most reliable. This is probably due to the maturity of the drivers in Windows 7 vs the relatively new joojoo os and ios. The Libretto W100 is also the first tablet where you will download and use full size pc programs and games. So a fast Internet connection is essential and that`s what Toshiba give you.

And me being me naturally the first thing i needed to do was download Steam and start installing games .You can install any full pc software you like as you have a full blown OS.

can you play games on the W100 ? Yes and most impressively using Steam

Steam games tested so far

Defcon 5  ,  Introversion classic , works perfectly and you can pinch zoom , scroll the map by touch and use the trackpad on the lower screen ,you probably do not want to play this in public areas as you may look like some hi tech megalomaniac with an eye to world domination. The speed of gameplay is excellent , and you can run the game in a rolling demo in one screen whilst you work or surf in the screen below , the Libretto W 100 certainly has enough power to heavily multitask compared to the ipad .

Monkey Island 2 Special Edition : Works perfectly ,point and click games are  so much better on a touch screen , and you can use the virtual trackpad in the lower screen .

I also downloaded the RUSE demo ,have not figured out how to turn down the details yet , the demo does not allow this perhaps the full game will, imagine that game split across the 2 libretto screens.Incidentally the demo downloaded at 2.9mb/s on average from Steam , that is most impressive.

And because I had to I installed FREESPACE 2 , and it ran perfectly , which bodes well for my portable space combat game fetish. Just have to figure out the best control scheme , if only they made a mini 360 controller , the W100 has Bluetooth so the possibilities are endless

And to go with your games you need music , Grooveshark works perfectly , pairing the W100 with some blue tooth headphones demoed the realtek sound ,and it gets very loud , though the inbuilt speakers are only a danger to a gnats ear ....

Flash 10.1 implementation is the best of all current tablets , but really flash is its own worst enemy and needs heavy optimization.

VLC media player runs great , and as on larger multiscreen displays you can use the image wall feature to exploit the 2 screens scaling and zooming to fill up both screens.I ran a 720p rip of Goemon split across 2 screens and it did not stutter.

Streaming video from sites in hi def is dependent on their implementation of flash .and the browser you use. Roll on html5

browsers tested

1. Safari 5 : once you get iPad fever you sometimes wonder what if Steve had put the full Safari browser on the iPad , well wonder no more on the W100 you can finally touch Safari 5

2. Internet explorer 8 : the default browser has the smoothest one finger scrolling and pinch zoom of the browsers I have tested so far

3. Google Chrome : the fastest ,but not the best when it comes to touch functions

There are many different ways to use this machine , it can be as much of a traditional pc ,tablet or slate as you like. Chose to navigate with keyboard arrows ,virtual trackpad, or just touch the screen , it adapts to your style.

The real joy will come when and if  TOSHIBA up scales the W100 to a full dual 17 inch core i7 dual screen tablet ,and if they don't  you know FUSION GARAGE ,APPLE , NOTION INK ,KNO,AND AT LEAST MSI  will.

Regardless  messing around with a W100 is great fun , just give it a couple of days for your eyes to adjust to the screen size ,and the aversion conditioning to kick in as your hands  learn the best way to hold the machine without melting.... you or the machine...and soon you too can prevent nuclear Armageddon and surf your favourite interweb locales all from the palm your hand .....

SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB WHY YOU NEED ONE

Anything Ipad can do Samsung  Galaxy Tab can do better ....... as the new commercial shows . Most significant of course is the fact that unlike others the Samsung Galaxy Tab is no longer vaporware.

This is the 2nd tablet pc in as many months , counting the Libretto W100 , to show tablets can do flash , have removable memory ,  and be backed by a major player . Hmmh I can feel the worried Cupertinos already spreading stories across their blog army about the mythical iPad 2 in desperation.

Because at some point someone will produce an iPad killer ,or should I say more saleable  alternative , this is inevitable and will be a great bragging right for who ever  produces the tablet that dethrones the present market leader. It may also help Steve get over his Adobe-phobia.....

You see even the Samsung Galaxy Tab great though it is , is just one of many upcoming slates , there are rumours that RIM will announce its BlackPad next week  with a new OS , and we have more Windows 7 slates, Exopc , Toshibas £329  Folio , and the Notion Ink Adam to look forwards to this year alone ,so expect the Cupertino mothership to start tugging on its  umbilical tech blogs to push iPad 2 rumours non stop till its release and attempt to mitigate the damage.

With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Tab the Droid Army entered the Slate War has  , I wonder if they will chant Roger Roger as they take on their flash free foe.

Why we joojoo : because you can do stuff like play Starcraft 2 on it !

By the power of Joojoo   !

The joojoo as you know is the Millenium Falcon of Tablets, on a bad day making the Kessel run your machine will given in after a couple of hours , but have your scruffy looking nerf herding friends make enough special modifications and you can make it do things that no other Imperial Tablet  can do one such example is this dear chap playing the FULL STARCRAFT 2 release  , I seem to remember seeing some Dave Perry mockups about streaming Blizzard games to the iPad but this is a game running natively ,running now .. check it out and you will see in the age of iPad and the rest why we still joojoo:

And with all the mods possible , this is only the beginning :And just the first of many of my discourses on why we still Joojoo!

Toshiba Libretto W100 playing Monkey Island 2 on Steam whilst checking out the reviews on Metacritic

More fun and games with the Toshiba Libretto W100 . Here we see some more brief multitasking tests , playing Monkey Island 2 Special Edition on Steam , whilst checking out the Metacritic scores for the game , to reassure myself the game is as great a classic as I remember.... naturally great minds think alike and the critics agree with me that the game is awesome ...although I could probably quote it line for line having played through every version going... but hey this is about multitasking on a full Windows 7 , 62gb ssd  , dual multi touch screen wonder tablet pc  so on with the videos.... The second video shows what happens in the vertical orientation , as many have asked ... now many can see that yes you can hold it as a book [ with your right hand burning....hint hold it with your left from the spine ! ] and your game will run in one screen whilst you peruse the web on t`other!

Apple CEO resorts to e-penis rhetoric in face of flopping share prices

Android leads to anger ..anger leads to hate hate  leads to suffering....

Have APPLE and Steve climaxed too soon ?

Yesterday with Apple admitting a twin below the belt self inflicted blow of falling share price and a magical drop in demand for the iPad the CEO and  Wizard of Cupertino threw down in a stereotypical geek e-penis waving frenzy . Now , iWorship his shadow but he has given better sermons. And Steve fans everywhere are thanking the maker the event was not face timed

iPad making Apple shareholders promises Steve's Ego cannot keep

The iPad has no serious competition , it is the only driver in the only car driving round its own exclusive closed iOS Formula 1 circuit. It has a cult like following ,and a supportive USA based blogosphere army that reports its failures more positively than its competitors successes . But the iPad is losing that race ,and this is extremely worrying, and fascinating.

iPad and Steve make Apple Crumble

So let`s go through Steve`s possible brain quake

"ACK!" : TODAY THE IPAD IS LOSING MARKET SHARE IN A MARKET  WITHOUT ANY COMPETITION

"ACK!ACK!" : GOOGLE ANDROID  ,BLACKBERRY , AND WINDOWS 7 TABLETS ANNOUNCEMENTS  ARE VERY REAL COMPETITION

GENIUS RESPONSE :Kill two birds with one stone: Using sleight of mind , direct attention of audience away from your falling sales , by waving your 9.7 inch iPad e-penis at the 7 inch upstarts, neglecting to mention that most of your competitors have 10.1 inch and 12 inch e-penises , or in the case of the Libretto W100 dual 7 inch e-penises!

"ACK!ACK!ACK! " ALL TABLETS APART FROM IPAD  DO FLASH ALL ARE OPEN :HORROR OF HORRORS SOME  HAVE FULL WINDOWS 7 OS ! IPAD WILL NEVER GET THESE FEATURES

GENIUS RESPONSE : omit these facts again using sleight of mind talk about these positives in a negative manner , open=fragmented fragmented = bad  ipad = closed closed = good. therefore ipad=good competition = bad and bad=dead

GENIUS FINAL SOLUTION : misuse TECMO scantily clad  fighting game reference "iPad competition is DOA .......Dead on Arrival" ...  it's Dead Or Alive Steve , obviously your not up with your Sega Saturn Classics..too much face time and too little game time....

These are the first steps of a CEO that will sooner than he would like ,and probably kicking and screaming, be "encouraged" to follow the philanthropic route of his fellow Silicon Valley pioneers/pilgrims.

The truth is the Apple iPad was never THE slate form factor it was always going to be one of MANY. Android has overtaken iOS with phones and will do with slates, full OS slates are infinitely more useful, and cost effective  than iOS  or Android. And Microsoft already has a tablet ready OS in Windows 7.

just some of the New Android Army  siding with the Tablet separatists or as Steve calls them The  fragmented

To move from an oft derided cult to global leader Apple will have to put the needs and wants of millions of new but fickle customers before the writ in stone tablet commandments of its mercurial CEO (iWorship his shadow), there is no consideration at present maybe out of fear or respect for Jobs ,being made to the fact that all these millions of new punters were someone elses customer not too long ago.

Oh and for Apple shareholders with diminishing returns  , this blogger entry was typed on my haptic feedback full pc keyboard on the lower of  two 7 inch multi touch screens on my Toshiba Libretto W100,  from Firefox 4 beta  with multi touch enhancements running on  full Windows 7 , a machine that truly represents the benefits of 7 inch portability, the truly open nature of a full operating system , and frankly awesome value for money when I consider what I payed for the iPad sitting next to it looking inadequate, and completely incapable of such basic tasks.

And when it comes to size and openness  the 12 inch Joojoo trumps all present slates, can run almost any OS of your choice and you can mess with it , upgrading ram , ssds, etc.

They say that pride usually comes before a fall ,but with falling shares and iPad sales  it seems for Apple it is the other way round , but hey you know they cool like dat.. they hip like dat ..... they cool....

The hard facts , falling market share even before strong or any competition emerges , a CEO with an out of control ego from the early 1980's , falling share prices , and a company mantra failing to give the customer what they want  ,means it is just a matter of time before this happens

this public announcement was made possible thanks to  Angry Birds , Angry Steve , Google and Android , and little bit of the Dark Side of the Force  , Thank you Mr Lucas!

The Notion Ink Adam Dead and Buried Before Arrival..

After a year of following Notion Ink this is my blog posted to in response to  Rohan Shravan revealing his Emperors New Clothes :ie no tangible hardware or software.....Tablet fans stay away from this one until at least January and CES 2011 ...

Here is what i posted on the Notion Ink Blog ,just in case they had difficulties
"The Adam will i fear in the words of Steve be dead on arrival. This preorder debacle is clearly reminiscent and worse than that of the Fusion Garage Joojoo . This will feed the tech crunch and endless rant gadget blogs for months . Notion ink have missed and messed their launch window and I predict this will go the way of the joojoo  , in fact the launch is much much worse than the joojoo with Rohans  preorder launch teaser campaign with websites going down, payment methods denied , a preorder that takes money 8to9 weeks before delivery , by the time Adam launches , a myriad of competitors with better tech , dual core CPUs , higher res cams ,ssds and over 20 with full windows os next year alone based on intel CPUs , are slated to arrive. Not least the iPad 2 , joojoo 2 , android 3 tablets ,etc  Oh by the way I love my joojoo running windows 7 ultimate , and it taught me  ,great engineering design and software is not enough to take on  Apple, it also showed me how infinitely more useful a full operating system is on a tablet .  Adam will be it looks a short lived niche product , this launch was targeted at the family , not the masses , a preorder should not sell out , and even Fusion Garage managed to show  working product before asking people to put down money. I won't go near the refund and possible customer support issues If Rohan wants to prove me wrong I would like to you to get the preorder i  have been waiting over a year for the pixelqi back up soon , i got neither an email or an op to preorder the pixelqi version or send me a working Adam for review ,  the USA blogs will eat Notion Ink for breakfast over the next 8 weeks , the only safe launch window for this product was before Christmas , and as has been stated in thousands of posts there is still no video of finished hardware or software. This is a cut-throat business , and with this non starter of a 24 hour teaser  for a broken preorder upfront payment that cannot use master card pay pal or google checkout ,with a refund policy and pricing that has even native Indians feeling worried , and another young Indian CEO on a plane stateside whilst his company flounders , cf Fusion Garage I take back my earlier comments that you guys have the stuff to give the likes of Mr Jobs and Gates sleepless nights . Your tech will be outdated by the time it hits in ces , the software and ui does not exist , if it does demo it ,not Photoshop it . By the time you release there will be no Market for your tablet and the fans will have moved on to the next great thing , tegra 3 etc full os tablets. I have used and reviewed every tablet going from iPad joojoo libretto to galaxy tab , I can clearly say the most useful is a full windows os joojoo running with 4 gb ram and 64 gb ssd. The most fun is the iPad and I hate apple , that is how good Steve is , the dual screen full os  libretto is the future , and if you want to see the future go check out the Acer Iconia .after a year of tablet use I will warn people off gimped phone os tablets and recommend you go for full os tablet pcs , more initial upfront cost but then you never need worry about apps android iOS or closed Eco systems that these so called wonders of tech really are . Adam is D.O.A , or it would be if it had arrived .  Come January everyone whether fans of ipad2 ,android 3 or full os tablets ,even dual screen fans will have viable alternatives ,why then am I going to put up with a teaser  campaign for a product no one can see or touch , the only revolutionary model of which appears to be sold out ..on preorder? There is no stock of the item to sell out in the first place ,what mathematical and engineering metaphors come to mind re that Rohan? There has been altogether too much talk and too little delivery if you guys get your Adams on time I will eat one of my joojoos . Come January the web will buzzing with iPad 2 news ,it already is ,whatever goodwill you built up over the last year seems to have been lost over this almost childish school project like teaser campaign . The exopc and wetab guys also tried this type of preorder , they will not be around this time next year let alone ces. I cannot express the level of disappointment I have after following you Rohan and Adam over this year. This is way worse than the fusion garage joojoo launch , they had tangible review products ,they had supply ,no teaser campaign, preorders that worked globally, and do you remember what  the blogosphere did to their revolutionary product? After all that lecturing from on high ,re lofty goals with flowery and sometimes obtuse engineering metaphors , you seem to have forgone the basics of bringing a product to Market ahead of time and to the widest audience possible not restricting that audience .however good your tech is , by the time you finish designing it ,it is surpassed . There is a tsunami of tablet launching this ces from established players. You must realise Rohan that the fanatical family of a few thousand blog posters will not sustain your company , delivering product will .  If you are serious about taking on the competition you need to get your head out of the clouds literally, as it appears you are on a plane!  and plant your feet firmly on the ground  This launch was not a success it was a disaster , someone has to get this across to you , and hopefully you will fix it with tangible product software and a preorder system that takes money on shipment not 10 weeks before a random date. And to not have your flagship model available for preorder ? What is the point? The only stand out featured model is sold out ? What happens if apple samsung toshiba add a pixelqi option to their next tablet? Your window of opportunity is gone. I need to take apart your preorder debacle on my own blog for self catharsis when I have had time to sleep ... I spent altogether too much time following and trying to preorder. Goodnight Rohan ,please prove me wrong ! Without flowery engineering metaphors! "

I will let you know what Rohan says ....

Unleashing the Joojoo with Windows 7 Ultimate a 64gb ssd and the Toshiba Libretto keyboard

Removing a few screws , reveals the easily  upgradable innards of my Joojoo

, a few seconds later the ssd is replaced with a new 64gb  one

, around a day later My  Joojoo now runs a full OS and is running many of the same programs my uber pc does

of course installing takes around 40 minutes ,the other 23 hours 20 mins were spent sleeping, , and now as Fusion Garage stop production and move onto Joojoo 2 ,finally it starts to show its full potential , not content with running a full operating system,  I find myself poaching the beautiful   touch screen keyboards from my Toshiba Libretto....

ths is the split keyboard ,one of 7 that I am using to type this see:

and the coolest 12.1 inch touch screen keyboard

you can of course use the Windows Keyboard ,handy if your jedi powers are weak and you need to see what you are typing ,checkout me editing a picture for this post in Paint :

Over the keyboard rush I am really pushing the envelope  by scrawling this   blog entry  in the  tablet input panel  i.e. 1 finger scrawling

And here is the rub , this is new, Windows7 Ultimate is infinitely more useful than a gimped phone os tablet ,just completing this chore writing a blog post editing a picture, just became more fun than on my uber pc .Typing ,move and grab actions are all effortless, devoid of the rsi causing mouse clicks and hammering of physical keys.

a joojoo configured in this way is fast enough, large enough and adaptable enough. Its a new way of computing the closest thing to surface computing and I mean computing in a complete way without the severe compromises imposed by phone os tablets.

 hmmh lets change the rotation

now we can do all of the above vertically!

This is how the joojoo should have launched with a full os ,large ssd, but even if it had touch computing is so in it`s infancy , and reviewers would have been daunted by all the new options a full os 12 inch open tablet brings. So Apple gave the world a device simple in function and even simpler to use ,that is their genius. But that does not preclude those of us who feel the need the need to mess around to seek alternatives and thanks to Fusion Garage I have an upgradeable tablet using a full desktop os ,keyboard software from another awesome dual screen slate, and one that praise the maker lets me use blogger.
