Not Long now before we find out how the latest update of Office [2010] muscles in to its usual hard drive parking space. The challenge for Microsoft will be recreating its predecessors omnipresence and necessity , in an era of minimal footprint, cloud ,smart phone os , low powered netbook/tablet , web/browser based productivity software , much of which is free [Google Docs,Open Office] or minimal cost [ Itunes Apps].
To compete with the challenge from Google , Microsoft will have to leverage Windows live in the same way Google have consolidated their online apps, in a way that has not yet occurred.
What Office 2010 really needs is a successful launch of a FREE to public browser/phone os based component through Internet , perhaps delivered through Windows Live , ala Google Docs - using Azure perhaps - as for now most people trust Office more than their Web Browsers , but this is rapidly changing, and the product targeting business /corporate/educational entities will have to compete with the ever evolving Google Docs apps suite.
Is Office 2010 a really new shiny but ultimately , anachronistic corporate printing press in an era of paper and ink free personal online press?
We may see that the Airlines are not the only example of industries under a Cloud this year.
Of course Microsoft has its interests in the Cloud , with Azure , Mobile Phone Office 2010 components on the way as you can see below . But these markets are now so fluid their products will have more competition than any time in recent history. There has been a drastic change in user needs, since the original Office suite launched users now social network ,blog , generate and publish Web content all without the need to go through one specific all encompassing branded app suite .
Perhaps if all the Beta testers [and the Beta version shows it is a sound piece of software] out there send smiles to Microsoft with the notification that to win their products need to be browser based , low foot print ,multi device friendly , and free please! My ! aren't we spoiled !
