Toshiba's 25th anniversary gift to the faithful includes the world first dual screen tablet ,running windows 7 no less. It is great to see a concept pc actually being released , and this one reaches the UK on August 19th , according to Toshiba UK . Real use videos ,you know the kind that Apple hires top ex tv show cop actors to voice over ,are now available :(sans voiceover!) chase friends on two screens sort your weekend out on dual screens a new way to travel with 2 screens and plan your leisure with two screens Although in the UK the Libretto W100 arrives on the 19th of August , it will be tested read played around with by Toshiba techs , for research of course, for a week before release to the iPad ennui and Courier resurrectionist party faithful in extremely limited quantities. Toshiba have a dual screen tablet running a full os ,a 62gb ssd and more screen real estate than many laptops, and every tablet in the near future bar the colossi that are the Kno and MSI dual screen tablets ,that Mr Demille would have happily placed in the Hestonators warm live hands .... the real innovation here is showing Windows 7 multiscreen capabilities,its something that is underused unless you are a desktop multiscreen user ,now you can do the same with something you hold in your hands , and as the hardware is open , you could apply your own os or touch screen layer , from jolicloud,meego,android, eventually chrome os,etc all without nuking the machine or voiding your warranty. Windows 7 clearly has a future with touch and tablets , and as hardware improves the gimped phone os that are excuses for gimped functionality of our magical Ipads will themselves just become an app within the full blown os. If Microsoft can manage to make Windows Mobile 7 synergistic with Windows 7 adapting both to work together they will have a distinct advantage over the closed off phone and desktop OS from Cupertino. Imagine switching on your Windows 7 phone or tablet  and being able to drag a document from your desktop to the phone or tablet or flick a picture from your tablet onto the desktop screen and syncing wirelessly ,with the OS handling the transfer and no store to sync through, or  using the touch screen functionally of mobile windows over the full blown windows 7 os on a device like Toshiba Libretto W 100. The result is  windows 7 becomes multi form factor across phones tablets and pcs .


This may be why Microsoft is pushing software over rushing to develop an iPad killer .Traditionally an omnipresent  software model is the key to their dominance and the beauty is Microsoft software is not locked to one hardware platform , or even form factor. It has been noted amongst the wise that the Toshiba Libretto W100 is a glimpse of the future.

Here are a couple of brief multitasking tests of the Toshiba Libretto which is seriously the most fun dual screen tablet to date .As usual disregard the Cupertino leaning blog reviews , and consider that TOSHIBA have managed to disprove several allegedly written in stone tablet pc commandments

1. Thou shalt not runneth a full operating system on thine tablet : Well the Libretto W100  not only runs a full OS ,it runs EVERYTHING your desktop and more importantly your browser of choice does on the cloud. AND YOU DON'T NEED AN APP FOR THAT.

2. Thou canst not runneth Flash on thine tablet  : that is such a lie , when you have a full OS and an open hard disk for storage you can run anything you like including flash and Silverlight.

Playing ,burning,blogging and having fun with with the Toshiba Libretto W100 the worlds first dual screen tablet and PC

Let me tell ya the Toshiba Libretto W100 has many a standout feature now that i have put it through its first days of use .


Not least of which is the fact that this is the first slate /tablet that i can type this blogger entry from. Sorry iPad and Joojoo don't give good blogger.


It may sound strange but the best way to think of the Libretto W100 is a miniature version of  that multiscreen  l33t pc sitting faithfully next to you. You know the one with 12 not so silent cooling fans , recycling a healthy amount  of your breathable air , and negating the need for any other form of heating your home.


Just like your uber l33t rig  there is fan noise it runs super hot , blows warm air , which is nice when its cold , but these are not issues for you have asbestos fingers , your`e used to heat and noise being indicators that your tech is being adequately cooled.  Heat leaves the Libretto , whereas the otherwise supercool and silent iPad has been rumoured to overheat and lockup.And the joojoo likes to warm its surroundings too but that is to be expected with such a large screen.

As it is this blog entry is being typed from one of only 50 Libretto W100s in Europe at this time ,  using Blogger is a feat only barely possible using html on my iPad and far simpler to do than using my joojoo which does not allow cut and paste.


The  much talked of  full and split keyboards are not the only important additions that the W100 brings ,where the libretto really shines , and most surprisingly is the virtual trackpad which really elevates the Libretto W100 beyond the simple media consumption of rival tablets.


The trackpad allows you to use pixel precision in clicking on windows buttons and links , so unlike other tablets you need never loose sight of where you are clicking, and the size of your fingers is negated.You know the  iPAD users frustration of trying to zoom in on text to click between text and edit or add missing letters etc , well you can navigate down to pixels with the virtual trackpad which has 3 buttons ,and you can re size it  too. Oh and its perfect for playing games ...


Now those of us that use the iPad and joojoo miss several aspects of keyboards ,with the Libretto W100 , you get cursor keys ,pgup and fn keys , so now you can move anywhere in text and on screen ,again with precision.No need to retype entire words or addresses just navigate with arrows to the precise point ,this mundane yet essential feature would bring much joy to the text pecking masses on the other slates.


The wireless n speed is very fast , amongst  slates the iPad is the slowest , and ios power conservation can frequently cut signals and reconnect, the joojoo is lightening fast and does not have as many cutout problems , but it is the Libretto W100 that is the fastest and most reliable. This is probably due to the maturity of the drivers in Windows 7 vs the relatively new joojoo os and ios. The Libretto W100 is also the first tablet where you will download and use full size pc programs and games. So a fast Internet connection is essential and that`s what Toshiba give you.


And me being me naturally the first thing i needed to do was download Steam and start installing games .You can install any full pc software you like as you have a full blown OS.


can you play games on the W100 ? Yes and most impressively using Steam

Defcon 5  ,  Introversion classic , works perfectly and you can pinch zoom , scroll the map by touch and use the trackpad on the lower screen ,you probably do not want to play this in public areas as you may look like some hi tech megalomaniac with an eye to world domination. The speed of gameplay is excellent , and you can run the game in a rolling demo in one screen whilst you work or surf in the screen below , the Libretto W 100 certainly has enough power to heavily multitask compared to the ipad .


Monkey Island 2 Special Edition : Works perfectly ,point and click games are  so much better on a touch screen , and you can use the virtual trackpad in the lower screen .

I also downloaded the RUSE demo ,have not figured out how to turn down the details yet , the demo does not allow this perhaps the full game will, imagine that game split across the 2 libretto screens.Incidentally the demo downloaded at 2.9mb/s on average from Steam , that is most impressive.

And because I had to I installed FREESPACE 2 , and it ran perfectly , which bodes well for my portable space combat game fetish. Just have to figure out the best control scheme , if only they made a mini 360 controller , the W100 has Bluetooth so the possibilities are endless

And to go with your games you need music , Grooveshark works perfectly , pairing the W100 with some blue tooth headphones demoed the realtek sound ,and it gets very loud , though the inbuilt speakers are only a danger to a gnats ear ....

Flash 10.1 implementation is the best of all current tablets , but really flash is its own worst enemy and needs heavy optimization.

VLC media player runs great , and as on larger multiscreen displays you can use the image wall feature to exploit the 2 screens scaling and zooming to fill up both screens.I ran a 720p rip of Goemon split across 2 screens and it did not stutter.

Streaming video from sites in hi def is dependent on their implementation of flash .and the browser you use. Roll on html5

browsers tested

1. Safari 5 : once you get iPad fever you sometimes wonder what if Steve had put the full Safari browser on the iPad , well wonder no more on the W100 you can finally touch Safari 5

2. Internet explorer 8 : the default browser has the smoothest one finger scrolling and pinch zoom of the browsers I have tested so far

3. Google Chrome : the fastest ,but not the best when it comes to touch functions

There are many different ways to use this machine , it can be as much of a traditional pc ,tablet or slate as you like. Chose to navigate with keyboard arrows ,virtual trackpad, or just touch the screen , it adapts to your style.

The real joy will come when and if  TOSHIBA up scales the W100 to a full dual 17 inch core i7 dual screen tablet ,and if they don't  you know FUSION GARAGE ,APPLE , NOTION INK ,KNO,AND AT LEAST MSI  will.

Regardless  messing around with a W100 is great fun , just give it a couple of days for your eyes to adjust to the screen size ,and the aversion conditioning to kick in as your hands  learn the best way to hold the machine without melting.... you or the machine...and soon you too can prevent nuclear Armageddon and surf your favourite interweb locales all from the palm your hand .....

I have in my hands the most powerful gaming portable pc on the planet , and it has nothing to do with the hardware inside it . 


The Toshiba Libretto W100 as you all know is a tablet from the future , legend has it  only 50 to 100 of them were sent back in time by Toshiba scientists from the year  2525 to 2010 .... 

And so having obtained one of these from a Ms Connor  somewhere near the Texican border ,  I decided today as promised to marry this device with onlive  THE game delivery system of the  future... 

You may have heard tech blogs go on about Alienware M11xs that set you back 4g , or the concept dual screen portable pc mockup erhhm soon to be maybe released for too much money Razer Switchblade.... here is the video it shows hardware running the over decade old Quake 3 , and the not so intensive World of Warcraft .. meh! say we all!... for today I have been playing the likes of Batman Arkham , Unreal III , Assassins Creed 2 and many more  thanks to onlive and the Toshiba Libretto ( I knew I bought it for some reason) .So dude save your money any netbook , laptop  , or folly like the Toshiba Libretto W100 outdoes the Switchblade and any Alienware  too : here let me show you how another week of my life has been totally wa...devoted to games...


first for illustrative purposes this is a MOCKUP VIDEO of the concept that is Razer Switchblade : 

Now lets get to some real high end portable gaming , on the ultraportable dual touch  screen 7 inch Windows 7 Toshiba Libretto W100   , which when running onlive  makes your epenis hardware so obsolete  it is hilarious and not in a mean Ricky Gervais way! Remember folks you too can play any of these games , from onlive! No need to battle T800s to get your hands on a W100 ... and absolutely no need to pay 1000s for a gaming laptop:


On with the show: The Libretto W100 has one of the fastest wireless modems going ,  I get 5mbps from my 50 meg connection when downloading Steam games , so onlive should be no problem : Apologies for my svga camera! the actual display resolution in game is razor sharp , indistinguishable from a high end pc check the still pics above! or try it for yourself !


The onlive interface running on W100 , like on the joojoo tablet , really shines on a touch screen , here in an even more portable fashion , you can hold this in your hands ,like a Nintendo  DS or 3DS , just remember to have flame retardant fingers as that top screen and its cpu run HOT!  But not as hot as normal, as the games are being streamed , your hardware is actually not going to heat up like it normally does every time a flash anim starts in a browser. So a pleasant side effect of using onlive , is that your netbook/tablet/pc/mac actually runs cooler . How do I know this , well when I have a Steam game chugging along on the top screen of the W100 , I could cook you breakfast off the back of it, but with onlive its just has a fuzzy warmness . Of course this is negated by the fact that I now use it longer and the heat eventually builds up any way !

Heat is no problem if you consider that for control the best device is stil an external keyboard and mouse for fps , and or a Xbox 360 wireless controller for everything else , this as you will see is a lesson I learned as I tested more games : The Libretto will let you hook almost any control device to it , and many onlive games are optimised for joypads.

Steve Jobs (get well soon dude) should also note absolutely no fingers need to be filed down as you can see from me using the coming soon section it is absolutely possible to use a 7 inch tablet , which also packs  2nd 7 inch screen and runs a full pc OS! and I did not even mention Flash!

so lets try a game how about Unreal Tournament III on the Toshiba Libretto : no install just click and play or touch and play with a tablet


First some static screens with a 5mp camera , to give an impression as to  how sharp the game actually looks , the videos are svga!

it's all too bea-ut-iful....

The first test I did was Unreal  3: with the touch screen keyboard : the small screen is difficult to film with a lo res camera , see it in real life the picture is razor sharp , as good as your/my l33t rig ! 

So the touch screen controls for this game are not that great , and I cannot be bothered to remap them , so time to play Unreal Tournament 3  with a wireless keyboard and mouse on the Toshiba Libretto : Result : awesome ! Why wireless ,well we need to stress onlive , the great worry with streamed games , especially high speed FPS games is controller input lag , and the good news is even with a wireless keyboard and mouse there is none that I can perceive . 

Und now ,  Unreal Tournament 3  split across 2 screens in the open book vertical orientation of the Toshiba Libretto W100 , totally useless but people will ask for it so here it is 

As you can see onlive on the Libretto W100 can handle any Unreal 3 engine game  :


But how about games based on  proprietary engines? Rebellions Aliens Vs Predator is a graphically intense power hungry game  on a desktop , here it flies on the Libretto ....

Lara Croft Underwear ... Sorry Lara Croft Underworld  :

A very cool feature of onlive is persistent game saves and instant game continuation  independent of devices/hardware . So when I took up Lady Crofts offer of following her round a..sorry follow her around ........for one of her adventures , I started on the Fusion Garage Joojoo , a day later when I was testing the game on the Toshiba Libretto I continued from the exact same point as I left off on a completely different device , and later on the same day I decided to pick up with Lara on my Desktop ! My devotion to Ms Croft truly knows no hardware bounds.....thanks to onlive ! You can do something similar with Steam , but not instantly , and you have to insure your hardware is up to spec , I could not have done the same with Steam at all with a game this detailed , and I would have spent a day redownloading !

and here is still to give you an idea of how sharp it actually looks : 

So here I leave Ms Croft stranded on her boat , but do not fret , I will pick up with her from the exact same place on my desktop or joojoo...

Next we have Rocksteady Studio's  Batman Arkham Asylum GOTYR  , this is a game which pushes the Unreal III engine on the fastest of hardware , now we are going to see it running full spec on a 7 inch ULV cpu powered tablet ! Just another example of how  the Toshiba Libretto W100 became the most powerful hand held gaming device on the planet thanks to onlive

And now onto  the new Prince Of Persia adventure :

It is frankly liberating to never have to worry about installing , downloading , patching or even having to tailor each games graphics settings , if only they had onlive in the DOS era , think of all those hours wasted on  making cfg and boot disks! 




Not bad lets stress test onlive and the Libretto a little , next I use onlive to mess around in the Arena and play a game in the top touch screen whilst browsing my blog in Internet explorer 9 on the second lower screen : Could you do this on your desktop without windows closing and minimizing or locking ?


 I fail miserably at Ninja Blade on the top screen , I am playing with a simple wireless keyboard and mouse ensemble .. should have stuck to the 360 pad!

ok stress test over how about a little sojourn in tropical Panau 

Avalanche's Just Cause 2 is just  one of the finest games you can play , now in the fine palms of your hands: smile , the Hestonator would be  impressed by my use of tablets!

Time to Red your neck a little in Borderlands

Now we jump to Assassin's Creed 2 , just click and play its magic , just think Brotherhood is on its way to the PC will it be first really big move for fans from Steam to onlive , quite possibly I do not really want to keep installing 22gb games !

Frontlines - I have had this game sooo long on retail and Steam , but thanks to onlive I am going to play and finish it ! woooah children its just a click away .....

Why so many tests and videos across 2 tablets and a desktop? well you got me I like games , and also because with a cloud based streamed game service ,you want to check how many actual dropouts and crashes occur , now did you see any? over the entire 3 day test ? onlive is real and works , you are probably more likely to see one of your traditionally installed pc games crash to the desktop than one you are playing onlive . And just think no drivers or patches to apply ever!

There is no way to emphasize greatly enough the changes that the Cloud will bring  a  service like onlive is only a herald of what is to come . A time where software publishers are the power and hardware , whether pc mac sony Nintendo or Microsoft is irrelevant . 


This is why I believe that the next Playstation , the next Xbox , the next Nintendo , or the mighty  fabled Apple gaming machine , may not be based on hardware at all , just a very fast broadband connection to streaming game servers , where we subscribe , I ranted  about this here long ago . Sound like science fiction ?well , the tech is already here with onlive as you can see has been keeping me occupied over the last week .

Years from now , whilst toasting marshmallows and radroaches round the campfire you will sing songs and tell tales remembering you were present at the death of  traditional video gaming and the coming  of the Cloud People ..who liberated your video gaming tribe with their magical onlive and also happened to save the rain forests in the process.

Now lets wait and see what Dave Perry and GAIKAI can come up with ...
