Yesterday with Apple admitting a twin below the belt self inflicted blow of falling share price and a magical drop in demand for the iPad the CEO and  Wizard of Cupertino threw down in a stereotypical geek e-penis waving frenzy . Now , iWorship his shadow but he has given better sermons.And Steve fans everywhere are thanking the maker the event was not face timed

The iPad has no serious competition , it is the only driver in the only car driving round its own exclusive closed iOS Formula 1 circuit. It has a cult like following ,and a supportive USA based blogosphere army that reports its failures more positively than its competitors successes . But the iPad is losing that race ,and this is extremely worrying,and fascinating.

So let`s go through Steve`s possible brain quake

GENIUS RESPONSE :Kill two birds with one stone: Using sleight of mind , direct attention of audience away from your falling sales , by waving your 9.7 inch iPad e-penis at the 7 inch upstarts, neglecting to mention that most of your competitors have 10.1 inch and 12 inch e-penises , or in the case of the Libretto W100 dual 7 inch e-penises!

"ACK!ACK!ACK! " ALL TABLETS APART FROM IPAD  DO FLASH ALL ARE OPEN :HORROR OF HORRORS SOME  HAVE FULL WINDOWS 7 OS ! IPAD WILL NEVER GET THESE FEATURES

GENIUS RESPONSE : omit these facts again using sleight of mind talk about these positives in a negative manner , open=fragmented fragmented = bad  ipad = closed closed = good. therefore ipad=good competition = bad and bad=dead

GENIUS FINAL SOLUTION : misuse TECMO scantily clad  fighting game reference "iPad competition is DOA .......Dead on Arrival" ...  it's Dead Or Alive Steve , obviously your not up with your Sega Saturn Classics..too much face time and too little game time....

These are the first steps of a CEO that will sooner than he would like ,and probably kicking and screaming, be "encouraged" to follow the philanthropic route of his fellow Silicon Valley pioneers/pilgrims.

The truth is the Apple iPad was never THE slate form factor it was always going to be one of MANY. Android has overtaken iOS with phones and will do with slates, full OS slates are infinitely more useful,and cost effective  than iOS  or Android. And Microsoft already has a tablet ready OS in Windows 7.

To move from an oft derided cult to global leader Apple will have to put the needs and wants of millions of new but fickle customers before the writ in stone tablet commandments of its mercurial CEO (iWorship his shadow), there is no consideration at present maybe out of fear or respect for Jobs ,being made to the fact that all these millions of new punters were someone elses customer not too long ago.

Oh and for Apple shareholders with diminishing returns  , this blogger entry was typed on my haptic feedback full pc keyboard on the lower of  two 7 inch multi touch screens on my Toshiba Libretto W100,  from Firefox 4 beta  with multi touch enhancements running on  full Windows 7 , a machine that truly represents the benefits of 7 inch portability, the truly open nature of a full operating system , and frankly awesome value for money when I consider what I payed for the iPad sitting next to it looking inadequate, and completely incapable of such basic tasks.

And when it comes to size and openness  the 12 inch Joojoo trumps all present slates, can run almost any OS of your choice and you can mess with it , upgrading ram , ssds, etc.

They say that pride usually comes before a fall ,but with falling shares and iPad sales  it seems for Apple it is the other way round , but hey you know they cool like dat.. they hip like dat ..... they cool....

 The hard facts , falling market share even before strong or any competition emerges , a CEO with an out of control ego from the early 1980's , falling share prices , and a company mantra failing to give the customer what they want  ,means it is just a matter of time before this happens

Notion Ink Adam Death of A Tablet part 2 : Impending Failure at launch?

Reading the entrails of my spare Joojoo I  continue to foresee the death on arrival of the Notion Ink Adam Tablet . Apart from satiating the Android nations hunger for a rival to the ONE  it will not have any significant impact on the tablet scene.

So there are videos , but there is no stock to pre order .There is no date for eta or delivery  As a company Notion Ink need to release stock not videos , any number of millions of UI layer videos exist  on Youtube at any given time , and many with cute kittens operating rival tablets and Rohan as cute as you are you cannot compare to mittens the kitten now can you ?

compete  with the feline interaction zenith the iPad has reached as illustrated by mittens below  ?

the lack of feline oriented functions in the  UI layer is just one more reason to worry for Adams future ,perhaps Rohan could start another year long blog offshoot where 1000s of the Notion Ink Flock bleat away .....

The insanity of the last paragraph is really just a non engineering design student metaphor for the complete nonstarter that the Adam launch has become.  In the end all that matters is stock reaching customers and their cats , and Adam has failed felines and their pet humans , claiming sold out pre orders is frankly just another part of the year long teaser campaign.

For almost a year Notion Ink have been leading loyal blog fans around by the nose detailing every detail , talking the talk , promising promises , and have delivered to date on none of them . Now videoing every function , at least superficially.

1. there is no stock - for an item that many were led to believe would be here before Christmas - Rohan should be chasing this not making teaser videos , oh look at the scrolling tabs .....

2. what are good people doing wasting time and money  on what looks like an 8g flash tablet that has no marketplace app store , a screen resolution that is not supported by the majority of open GL games ,  hardware that will be dated :

3. when it launches  , if it launches  outside a few 1000 niche purhases , it will fail : it will be competing with Motorola Google Tablets , Windows 7 tablets , the Asus tablet , the HP , Dell whatever tablets and lo of course Steves Apple iPAd part deux , not to mention the Samsung 10 inch ramp up of the Galaxy Tab and the dual core Blackberry tablet!

Are millions of people really going to switch to Notion Ink from established players , and if the likes of Samsung find it tough against Apple , and they have stock released everywhere , what possible chance has Notion Ink got with Adam with its present launch fiasco.

Many people talk of Notion Ink needing a PR company , a PR company to do what ? sell hot air?  they need to ramp up production , sort the pre-orders out for their only standout product the fabled PixelQi version ,stop with the teaser videos .  Blackberry also had teaser videos earlier this year for their tablet , thing is there was no tablet , it will hit next year , all of this makes business nonsense . 

The only thing that can take on iPad will be iPad 2 , millions of which are being manufactured right now in time for next February . What makes Steve a genius is preparation , and he seems to be able to have more time to devote to work as he is not constantly on a one to one blog posting teaser videos about a phantom product like the CEO of Notion Ink has done or the CEO of Blackberry did earlier this year

But come February you can bet Steve Jobs will be weaving his magic sales spiel about the only tablet that will dominate this form factor sales for 2011 , the iPad 2.    

so the question is do I wear black or white to the Notion Ink Adam launch/funeral , who knows may be I'll take a Notion Ink style survey on that ... 

Of course I may be completely wrong , but I have watched Fusion Garage fail , and they had a tangible product , [but useless software ] .


I have been using a 1024 by 600  dual screen tablet for months and I can tell you the nominal res is the iPads 1024 by 768 . Plus all those hoping to flash this with an other OS will be operating at a suboptimal res for most modern day OS applications and indeed games .  I can play almost anything on my Windows 7 Joojoo with its 720 p 1366 768 res and web pages etc look gorgeous at that res. So many games and applications will not run at 1024 by 600 that this fact makes the Adam a non starter for those hoping to try Windows and other OS on it .


And then we come to the real power users , you /we need dual screen tablet notebooks with full cpus and gpus as well as operating systems .


Why so serious ? Have you read the Notion Ink Blog , it comes across to cynics like sanctimonious self supporting babble . We love you love ... ahh ... someone ask the family where the product is , when it will release why it seems to have lost its most important features , how it will survive against the coming biblical plague of Tablets and  with Pharoh releasing his iPad 2 ... 


The thing is Rohan the audience for tablets has grown up a lot since CES 2010 , and the iPad launch , even the iPad 2 will not satisfy the tech lust of an audience that demands the best tech for its money . 


If my next fun tablet is an iPad 2 then 


Mine other tablet is a  full OS large screen hi res dual screen i5 i7 tablet


The hidden cost with all these non desktop OS  tablets , is the app purchasing , the apps are always sub desktop or laptop OS in functionality but as I said we are a year older when it comes to tablet use and not as easily wowed by tablet tech . 


Consider the Acer Iconia an i5 powered dual screen tablet that runs a full Windows 7 OS , infinitely more useful than the Notion Ink Adam , next year this is what many existing tablet owners frustrated with hardware limitations and having no need to learn the intricacies of another tablet will be chasing full OS dual screen tablets with more power than today's laptops and many desktops :

Asus` Four Tablet Musketeers cry one for all and all four one

En Garde ! 
It`s a great day when you get to present not one but 4 tablets , the CEO of ASUS should be rightly proud of his company . The Asus keynote earlier this week was not like rival presentations concentrating on one product built with off the shelf vanilla tech with oh so last year Tegra 2 chipsets +/- the Tron Evo laced UI that Google calls Honeycombe or the Biblically monikered and plagued Eden OS... No Asus is doing something different wisely casting its nets far and wide:

One 4 all and all 4 one ............. The Eee Pad is not one slate it is 4!  Transformer, Slider, MeMO and Eee Slate EP121: What Asus have done is tune and  evolve the tablet form factor with the evolving  needs of the tablet audience , for we have outgrown our fun large screen ipods , we want the functionality of a pc in a slate , a high end pc,running a full desktop OS , or we want a smaller mobile slate , and one you can write on..with a pen ! or we want freedom from iOS but not from apps i.e we want the promise of  Android Honeycombe slates . Don`t believe the hype! Windows 7 is a great slate OS : How do I know ?
I am writing this on a Joojoo running Windows 7 Ultimate , with 4gb of Ram and a 64 Gb ssd , there is no of the lag or slowdown , touch is responsive , all the aero fx work,flash full screen hd video (which many blogs claimed couldn't be done , anything I can do on my desktop I can do with Windows 7 on this slate,short of run Crysis maxed out  , Windows 7 is infinitely more useful than any of the sub os app based iOS or Android slates  , all this with a 1.6ghz Atom CPU , I cannot wait to try out a fully powered i5 or i7 slate like the EP121 as the one thing I cannot swap out from the Joojoo is the motherboard/cpu , but who knows ?


The freedom you will gain with Windows 7 a full OS running on a slate so outdoes the novelty of a gimped phone OS or Tronified [the wrong Tron at that] UI that Honeycombe turned out to be  ,  that many a future iPad 2 purchaser may now be warming to Asus and the return of simple concept of giving the customer what they want as opposed to telling them what they need and can have. 


The price of Asus Eee Slate is so close to what the high end iPad 2 will be, infact it is seriously cheaper than my present iPad with all the dongles , whilst at the same time packing more punch than high end MacbookPros , and Macbooks  and undercutting them by say $1000 that this could signal the end of the net book vs laptop vs slate argument .


It is likely that one or all  of the 4 Asus Tablet Musketeers will defeat the iPad 2 and millions will be freed from their iOS shackles.... 


Watching the keynote I believe it will most likely be  the D`Artagnan or Dogtangan  of the bunch : the ASUS Eee Slate EP121-1A010M 12.1-Inch Tablet PC that does this

Microsoft Surface : better Slate than never !

Microsoft Surface hardware marks the beginning of  Redmond vs Cupertino proper.... For months now we have had access to Windows 8 but never seen  the hardware it is going to push. 


Many blogs and newspaper tech columns are talking about Microsoft's new  " tablets " but this is totally wrong , for Windows 8 is a Slate OS . And therein lies the rub... or the scribble , for  the real power of Windows 8 over iOS is not just the hardware that runs it , but the fact that Windows 8 allows you to create as well as consume , work as well as play . And play anything you like from DOS , Steam , Flash , the list is endless. Like wise that pen accompanying the slates is a game changer , I can tell you you will be using it not just to write , but to move windows around the old legacy desktop with pin point precision. Ever wanted to scribble a blog entry , lecture , write your own  Great Tween Trilogy ? It is going to be a whole lot easier with a Windows Surface slate..


And that is the subtle yet killer difference between iOS and Windows 8 , iOS is a tablet OS with feeble content creation abilities ( deliberately gimped to keep you tapping those Apps) , Windows 8 is a Slate OS  with content creation at the heart of it's design , whether you use it on a tablet or slate !


Here at thegameveda it has been tradition to install Windows 8 on anything with a touch screen , be it Atom powered , Dual screened , or even with a beating heart of iOS  ... all my tablets run Windows 8 .... 


Now finally we see the big M get into gear . And I cannot wait to see what the third parties bring to the fight ... Windows 8 is going to create the first L33T custom tablet /slate generation.But for the masses we now know Microsoft branded hardware will available and hopefully without the madness of Apple launches...

Apple signally failed to listen to users over 3 generations of iPad , it has had 3 generations to merge iOS with OSX and give us Mac Air touch and Mac Pro touch ... what people want ... I fear the greed at the top went for 3 years of App store profit , and held back this natural evolution , now Microsoft is poised to take advantage .


Leading with a touch based full desktop OS was an awesome move  , months  ahead of official releases of  Windows 8 and Windows Surface ,there are millions of users of Windows 8 RP , CP , and Preview , and the majority of Win 8 users I met at a recent programming event all were using Macbooks  , each of those Win 8 bootcampers NEEDS to upgrade to a Windows 8 Surface machine to fully exploit as a developer and benefit as a user from the features it brings. That is potentially millions of recent Apple owners switching to Windows 8 Surface and other Windows 8 machines ...


And there we have it , Microsoft doing what it does better than any one else , not hardware or software but developing and nurturing a NEED for that hardware and software...


This new form factor is going to hammer the PC Desktop industry, give me three of these  , hook them up to 30 inchers , and HMDs like the ST1080 and 2012 looks like another year I will give upgrading my desktop a miss....
