Most amazing news of the Sony E3 keynote: Steam will be on PS3 !

The PS3 version of Portal 2 will use  Move , and be delivering benefits of Steam , now this is quite amazing , in fact most amazing as Gabe Newel who presented the game at E3 , is known for famously shunning consoles and in particular the PS3 , remember how long you had to wait for the Orange Box?


Steam is the single greatest boon to PC gamers  this generation , reversing the trend to piracy , and restoring much lost respect and revenue for games developers and consumers , its way cool to own games , far cooler than pirating !That Steam may be coming to the PS3 , is the most revolutionary announcement of Sony`s E3 conference .Steam and Valve seem to have realised they need to push Steam across as many platforms as possible .


Just think of linking your PSN and Steam accounts , and never losing game saves , or worrying about damaged bluray discs again. And as PC fans know Steam sales are soooo annoying as you always run out of money the particular day they drop your most wanted game by 75% in price!Who knows soon Steam may be pushing games, apps , and movies across pc , console and mobile platforms ?

Why not get these  people to subscribe to NASA and have their names written in history as pioneers of space exploration ! Instead of casting x on y with z for 2000 AP , you could actually be funding the future of man , Sony got gamers to contribute to science with Folding , PC users already contribute to SETI , so how about evolving this to allow actual funding of NASA and International Space projects  removing the government funding shackles altogether. 

Moon Base Alpha is of course just one awesome free Space sim , you will of course be familiar with zero gravity simulation walking/fighting in your home/school playground /college dorm,and 

for those less dedicated there is the excellent ORBITER , totally free and constantly updated , very handy if you find yourself on a Space Shuttle and the pilot has just discovered an allergy to the in flight combo meal or turns out to be some James Bond villain from the 80s .......

Free downloads freeing or enslaving the games addict ?

The summer of Steam downloads continues , and it seems Gabe and the gang at Valve have taken a little notice that Apple and Steve , when not handing out post antennagate iphonedoms  and trashing rivals , rule when it comes to  hooking users to their platform with free downloads , so from Steam  we have Alien Swarm free for every one .

This is the second pretty awesome free download in the last couple of months if you count Moon Base Alpha , each one of these brings a wave of new Steam users to the platform.


What Steam and Valve have in their court is a potential user base that is 10s of millions larger than Apples iTunes , and they cater for significantly more powerful hardware .


Would you rather pay  $5 for a full blown pc game , or $5 for an app , well the answer is you don`t have to . These days its likely you will get both a game from Steam and iTunes for free or , or for less .
Now this is synergy , and market forces at play , the free games and apps bring more users to iTunes and Steam , both encourage people to download legally , millions sign on and the costs to consumers decreases .


Initially


For now that is all of these free downloads are hooks , years from now we will be paying Steam and iTunes to store our beloved games and music collections on their clouds . So enjoy the free stuff ride whilst its here , in the long run we will be paying them back for cloud  server storage maintenance and backup .

Download Cyan Complete pack from Steam

This includes the obvious  Myst Riven and URU , but also video games milestones such as  Cosmic Osmo and the Worlds beyond the Mackeral and The Manhole  , which many a mac fan used to tease poor pc dos owners with , these were some of the first games to use a mouse ,  introducing the world to the concept of hypertext links , and the concept of point and click adventuring  running parallel to and predating many of the great Lucasfilm and Sierra point and click classics. Myst  also was the game that finally forced people to wake up to new fangled CDROM games . 


For all you  button pushing Lost fans  , Myst and Riven have stories and worlds far more esoteric than Lost  , and  wait till you get a load of the buttons you can push to operate strange contraptions that appear to do nothing at all!   You can also see the puzzles , locales , duplicitous characters, and the narrative flow and reveal in the  Myst series as influences on Lost.


Who knows it might even make you gain a deeper understanding of what on earth was going on!
Anyhoo in the meantime you can enjoy playing through some of the first , most original , and head scratching click everything on the screen and see what happens adventure games thanks to Steam.

Download Kane and Lynch 2 demo now from Steam

Time to reflect on Io Interactive whilst my Kane and Lynch 2 demo downloads from Steam , console owners please get a pc already.


What Io Interactive  do when they create a game franchise is create a media transcending franchise , Hitman was always begging for Hollywood treatment , as was Kane and Lynch ,  not surprising as Io Interactive  write games the way great Hollywood directors make great movies , like the best blockbusters you are left to fill in gaps in script or forgive them altogether . Year on year summer box office returns show  enough of us love Michael Bay films now don't we? The Hitman series is a sublime multiplatform franchise that carved its own niche in a crowded field of stealth em ups . Kane and Lynch , whilst completely misunderstood is an excellent step up from the action of the  Red Dawn inspired  Freedom Fighers . 


Io`s Kane and Lynch series has character , 2 in fact , twisted and deep enough that many A list hollywood method merchants would love to tackle the roles , and they will soon if the film lives up to the poster.


By the end of the first game , you have lived and played through all your favourite Hollywood set pieces from prison riots out of OZ ,  the bank heist from The Dark Knight  , the street battle from Heat  with the police , complete with 3 piece suits and matching money bags, or the club scene from Collateral  another Michael Mann reference ,to the end  when you are taking on entire  Latino republic armies  Butch and Sundance style , its pure Hollywood. All the time coping with two totally insane protagonists along the way  . We are not talking cookie cutter fps/third person shooter gameplay here , your characters are messed up which many reviewers used to the "it points the mouse and clicks the button and makes things go bang" game mechanics of many a souless game not able to cope with a game that tried to add a tinge of total insanity to its characters not to mention a lack of personal grooming.
You are not meant to like these characters they are anti-heroes! They have facial hair and bald patches , incurable drug habits and homicidal tendencies progressive enough that they are a danger to an entire nations armies.


In the 80s no one would have cared and Stallone and Arnold would have played them with perfectly missed comic timing  and we would have had at least 4 sequels by now.....


But what you really need is a grizzled young Sinatra in wino method mode and David Carradine  playing Kane and Lynch [a version needing much posthumous cgi work],  knowing our luck we will get Stiller and Wilson although Tom Cruise could probably method both Lynch and Kane in the same movie!. Yes I know its Bruno and Foxx on the poster!


What makes every Io Interactive game a keeper is the  accompanying Jesper Kyd soundtrack , hands up if you bought the special editions to get hold of the soundtracks?  Jesper is simply the best video games composer on the planet. You know when you boot up an Io game its his music that completes the experience of being lost in another game world with atmosphere script and  kudos that keeps Hollywood knocking on Io Interactive`s door


Hitman , Freedom Fighters , Kane and Lynch show sometimes style is far more than substance , give a little leeway to these games , tolerate their difference to the normal cookie cutter games you play and enjoy examples of gaming completely outdoing Hollywood at its own game , right my steam download has just completed and its time to get some Dog Days on.


Wanan people !

Quakecon , what do you mean Quake con? Carmack who?

In today's xbox live themed game market many a young gamesfan will be scratching their heads as to who this Carmack bloke is , for today it is not iDs awesome ,for their time ,fps engines that drive the games we play , buy mostly , mostly the Unreal Engine that you will find powering your major games releases , from Gears Of War to Batman Arkham Asylum to practically every bad and good cross platform release over the last decade, the dominant force has been an Unreal Engine , and the boys and girls at Epic ,not our heroes at iD


Epic focused on consoles and crossed platforms with each new version of their engine . They have the power , whereas the legends at iD Carmack and co , are not going to spring to the mind of the average xboxlett slave boi/girl. 


 This is a shame , as without iD , there would be no modern Western games scene , and we would all be happily lost in the latest cute Nihon platform dating rpg survival horror arcade racing beatemup. Imagine your life without Doom , Quake II,   Duke Nukem , Half Life , Counter Strike [errh and there it stops] , there's a great big hole you would have to go back in time and prod Romero to give up on Daikatna and Carmack into creating the genre  , or the horror of bright coloured platform dating rpgs would end our civilization. 


So people bow your head to one of the greatest games creators and developers of our time , and forgive iD for Doom 3 already , it would help if iD stopped optimizing code for gimped phone os mini games , and got back to pushing back the boundaries of the latest technology .. As iD moves ever closer to developing the 60 fps electron microscopic first person shooter iDespair. At least they are making games for the little people! iD used to be about pushing boundaries , it needs to get back there or pretty soon Epic will be running the Unreal Engine all over them on the slates , and phones they have made their pet project. I mean what sounds more impressive ...1. oooh lookie the sprites moving at 60 fps on a 4 inch screen or 2. 3d photo realistic gameplay across 3 30 inch lcds running 7800 by 1600 res ,at over 100 fps . And you know if iD aren't going there then the next iteration and the present iteration of the Epic Unreal Engine already is . 


If as I fear  you are indifferent to Quakeconn , iD and their legacy ,checkout Steam and grab some of gaming history/evolution . They have EVERY id game [well not every] + some Bethesda tidbits[ Oblivion , Fallout] going for a song , 27 games for £49.99 , not much to pay for a playable lesson in gaming history.


You know just like you spend 1000s running the latest phone to play a $1 game , we used to spend 1000s building pcs just to play the next iD classic , so £49.99 is a bargain for their entire [almost] back catalogue. Plus the Behesda titles  which are some of the best games ever created don`t hurt the package much ....

Whether you fancy yourself as a Flashing Blade type, or have delusions of being a legendary Seeker get over to Steam and download and  play the only Equus persona venatus  free form mounted combat action rpg sandbox  game and its expansion/pseudo sequel .


And  seriously ,its only a little like the Witcher  but with  more equus . Or like Oblivion but with much more Equus....Or my little medieval war pony with more rpg ...


And completely seriously Mount and Blade is a gem of an rpg series , that pc rpg fans should not miss especially at this price .


Imagine the fun you can have jousting with 64 players !  How about a Holy Grail mod with siege cows ? Right knave fetch my steed and armour ....We will We Will Rock You!!!!!!!!!!!
