Unleashing the Joojoo with Windows 7 Ultimate a 64gb ssd and the Toshiba Libretto keyboard

Removing a few screws , reveals the easily  upgradable innards of my Joojoo

, a few seconds later the ssd is replaced with a new 64gb  one

, around a day later My  Joojoo now runs a full OS and is running many of the same programs my uber pc does

of course installing takes around 40 minutes ,the other 23 hours 20 mins were spent sleeping, , and now as Fusion Garage stop production and move onto Joojoo 2 ,finally it starts to show its full potential , not content with running a full operating system,  I find myself poaching the beautiful   touch screen keyboards from my Toshiba Libretto....

ths is the split keyboard ,one of 7 that I am using to type this see:

and the coolest 12.1 inch touch screen keyboard

you can of course use the Windows Keyboard ,handy if your jedi powers are weak and you need to see what you are typing ,checkout me editing a picture for this post in Paint :

Over the keyboard rush I am really pushing the envelope  by scrawling this   blog entry  in the  tablet input panel  i.e. 1 finger scrawling

And here is the rub , this is new, Windows7 Ultimate is infinitely more useful than a gimped phone os tablet ,just completing this chore writing a blog post editing a picture, just became more fun than on my uber pc .Typing ,move and grab actions are all effortless, devoid of the rsi causing mouse clicks and hammering of physical keys.

a joojoo configured in this way is fast enough, large enough and adaptable enough. Its a new way of computing the closest thing to surface computing and I mean computing in a complete way without the severe compromises imposed by phone os tablets.

 hmmh lets change the rotation

now we can do all of the above vertically!

This is how the joojoo should have launched with a full os ,large ssd, but even if it had touch computing is so in it`s infancy , and reviewers would have been daunted by all the new options a full os 12 inch open tablet brings. So Apple gave the world a device simple in function and even simpler to use ,that is their genius. But that does not preclude those of us who feel the need the need to mess around to seek alternatives and thanks to Fusion Garage I have an upgradeable tablet using a full desktop os ,keyboard software from another awesome dual screen slate, and one that praise the maker lets me use blogger.

Playing Fallout 3 GOTYR on the Joojoo tablet using Steam ...

Well it shocks me the hidden power that the joojoo actually has , for most of last year mine sat as an intersting purchase , on the shelf , waiting , waiting for a compatible ssd or msata to those in the know .  Some time last Autumn I got one , plus 4gb of DDR3 and Windows 7 Ultimate, and the joojoo has been my favourite gaming machine ever since .

Every day I discover a new game  or new old game that runs on it , and I mean far surpassing my expectations or anyone elses.. that is before you consider onlive , unity ,browser gaming and all the other gaming innovations that require and benefit from a full OS tablet.

Joojoo was a tablet they said could not run a browser with Flash correctly today I will show you it running Fallout 3 Game Of the Year on Steam .  Take a look see , now what would you rather play on your tablet , a watered down app mimic rpg , or the finest the PC and Steam has to offer?

I am astonished at the speed that the joojoo's desktop  nVidia Ion handles this game , take a look at some extensive gameplay , from the Birthday scene , the combat system , escaping the Vault  and some wide open spaces , check out the draw distance , the speed , and sound this is the desktop game ! not some lame app rendition or streamed version.. this is running natively installed on a 64gb msata ssd !

Even though we build gaming rigs , every gamers dream is to break free from their computer room  and have access to all their games in the palm of their hands. Windows 7 on tablets ,  is clearly  the app for that as you can see from my continued tests for actual use , i.e. full blown pc gaming ....

Continuity between your desktop and tablet - one OS whether it is Windows 7 or 8 will free you from app slavery , come on who wants to play a watered down Android or iOS rpg when you can just click the Steam button and play, and continue  your favourite Bethesda RPG like Fallout 3 GOTYR for instance?

Why buy PC games and all those apps when you can play all your pc games on your tablet at no extra cost , the same goes for office and productivity applications.

The joojoo configured this way is just a glimpse of what is coming  , although there is now a market for closed phone os tablets , there is a concurrent growing demand for full Windows 7 tablets , imagine what an i7 1g AMD or nVidia next gen gpu Windows 7 tablet could do ..

With the joojoo owners really lucked out with Fusion Garage making the device easy to open ,it can exploit some of the latest msata storage , DD3 Ram , and contains a desktop Ion GPU , with dedicated and shared memory ,not bad at all for your average tinkerer...

next time I think I have to try Oblivion..... after  Lord Of The Rings Online which I forgot about
no wait next time the Classic Fallout 1 2 and Tactics on the joojoo!

fire ants like Percy above keep my joojoo warm

check out the Fallout series on Amazon

Darkspore Beta on Joojoo editing heroes and triggering abilities using touch

With 2 days of the open Beta on Steam , you need to try out Darkspore . The devs are so friendly they even let me know they were adjusting the controls after I asked them to optimise them for touch , which is how I am going to play this game . Crysis 2?  well that joins the list of hundreds of Steam games which I need to buy and never play ...

In this video you see the hero editing section of the game , now this is going to be addictive as hell in itself , and I learn how to trigger abilities , without using the mouse this time , and as you can see from the larger explosions in this latest  video...

Reviewing the ACER Iconia dual screen Windows tablet : Test 1 multi touching Cylons..

Ahh the irony thegameveda has been bawling about how few iPad 2 s are in existence and then dagnabit gone and bought a tablet that is even rarer than Steve's job..

And so it came to pass , I found  myself typing this blog entry on a dual screen Acer Iconia tablet. And presently I found myself  delighted by this tablet for crazy people . That is the right kind of crazy people , thegameveda kind of crazy people.

Naturally I have to test the Acer Iconia through the medium of games , if you need an uber technical view please check .. notebookchecks review which is well worth translating from German to English .

So today let's start  with Browser gaming : no not Flash in Facebook , but real core gaming courtesy of Bigpoints Battlestar Galactica Online : Time to  buzz Galactica's "tower" , you with me Goose?

You know this runs pretty well on a Windows 7 powered joojoo and the dual screen Toshiba Libretto , but on the dual 14 inch touch screens of the iconia it shines.  This bodes well for other Unity and Browser games .

Straight away you should be able to tell the Intel HD graphics combined with i5 are actually a pretty potent combination on this tablet . You can see Unity , therefore Flash and Java work fine , Chrome can be stretched across the 2 screens and , the wireless N is speedy enough to play a major online MMO, you can also use cable if you must  ! The sound on this machine is also superior to other tablet PCs , I have it turned down in the videos it is so loud! :

What about productivity that bane of the tablet form factor ?
The Iconia has no problem with me typing this blog entry out in the top screen whilst Youtube uploads  and process the video you are about to see in the second touch screen ..

Preliminary thoughts

There are two worry points that many reviewers have focused on ,the battery life and the integrated  gpu .Let's get these out of the way

The Acer Iconia ways a ton , you will not be carrying it anywhere , that say you would your iPad 2 , so ,no, don't even think of taking a 3kg dual 14 inch screen tablet into the lavatory.... This is a serious multitasking desktop adjunct. Not a netbook or laptop replacement. As such it is as likely to be used without it's power cord plugged in as your desktop is...

Used with skill the Iconia is a new way to work and play , but you have to learn new ways to accomplish old tasks.Once you do that worries like battery life are irrelevant in  the 10 hour battery span of an iPad 2 you cannot achieve the most basic tasks that the Iconia lets you in minutes. For instance typing this blogger entry in a Chrome browser . That's not even getting to fancy stuff of streaming movies in the top screen whilst Facebooking ,Youtubing and Flickring in the lower window ...

The second worry is the Intel gpu ,  consider this scores higher than any other Windows tablet with a 5.3 and it surpasses the desktop ion that I have been using play the likes of Dragon Age 2 on a joojoo tablet , and that only has an Atom CPU .So there are several thousand FULL games that you can play on the Iconia ,none of which are ever going to make it to iOS or Android.

Another great Windows 7 tablet the  Asus ep121 slate scores less than 3 in business and gaming graphics but even that manages to play several thousand pc games without breaking a sweat including Starcraft 2 and Call Of Duty Modern Warfare ...

The latest greatest games are going to be played on your MultiGPU desktop , so the missing discrete graphics really do no bother me  , I mean I am going to play Crysis 2 at 5120 by 1600 on a multi monitor set up ,with real gpu hardware  not on a cut down GPU in a £2000 macbook pro...unless some kind Apple soul donates one to me...

The draw of the Iconia is the evolutionary change in how it gets you multitasking  not the hardware or software  it packs  , the keyboard is the fastest touch screen input device yet created .And Windows fans you can even do Ctrl Alt Del !  as this is the first real multitouch Windows 7 device , with more than 2 point touch . The dual screens ,even when used with an external keyboard are a godsend for multitasking and multi monitor fans. The choice of OS Windows 7 is essential for multi monitor setups , whether it is to allow dual screen gaming ,multimedia,or productivity. The i5 cpu also allows true multitasking ,task it with 10 open Chrome tabs and it still does not slow down and remember you can throw those across two screens !

These are great times for people with exotic tastes in PC hardware ,  if you fall into this category you have the  desire to get one already.

To follow , thegameveda will game on the Acer Iconia using  Steam , Onlive , Impulse and GAIKAI  .meaning I have been playing so many games already that I have had no time to blog about them by the way did I mention the Iconia looks gorgeous?

the Iconia is a glimpse of the tablet future , one beyond i7 , multiscreen  , with discrete gpu and running Windows 8 .. at that point Steve may himself be screaming for a  Mac Air tablet to compete .

2011 is the year that Windows tablets  bring the cloud and with it desktop productivity ,real gaming independent of hardware ,  everything else is just a substandard camera or thinner version of last years model...

get your Acer Iconia whilst they are still around...

Acer Iconia dual screen multi tasking tests Starcraft 2 vs Starcraft 2 and R.U.S.E vs Metacrtic

Day 2 of thegameveda Acer Iconia review . And it is time to push those 2 touch screens and the hardware behind them with that stalwart of games not made for tablets but reviewed by everyone anyway : Starcraft 2 .

Imagine you have just discovered a company called Blizzard and the worlds largest Korean youth mind control franchise ( after the good Reverand that is... )  known as  Starcraft 2 . You want to play , but need to know also how the mind stuff works . You need to go to the website , but you need to play as well .

In steps the Acer Iconia , and says yes you can.. This is a stress test for the Iconia take a look at the speed of the browser in the second screen , and the game playing in the top screen , now you can keep up with your mind control whilst you surf the cause of it...

The iconia isn't even stressed by this test  , the top screen is ice cold , whilst the lower one is not even warm . Just goes to show when it comes to tablets on paper the hardware may not stack up , but when it all comes together it shines  , just ask Steve he pulled the same trick with our iPads too...

And for  our  second test  how about Steam and Metacrtic vs R.U.S.E

this time we will play the game and launch a full screen video :

Just think instead of this I could be endlessly syncing apps on iPad 2 ...More to follow ...

Acer Iconia dual screen tablet test XIII FPS games part 1: Crysis 2 on Steam

Time to move onto testing FPS games , and naturally we should start with the one that is most demanding , none other than Crysis  2 .  When you start the game on Steam you get a warning message about non support of the Intel GPU , simply ignore it and start the game , which you can see running quite happily in the top screen whilst the official website is open in an IE9 window in the second screen  : (forgive my vga camera , the game itself looks a lot nicer in real life as you can see from the picture at the top of the post )

More fps tests to follow ...

get an  acer iconia     now!

Crysis 2 played on the Joojoo and Iconia tablets welcome to the age of the il33t3rati!

Cryteks Crysis 2  played by thegameveda on an Atom powered nVidia Ion GPU'd  Windows 7 Ultimate Fusion Garage Joojoo Tablet , running on Steam of course!

A year ago all the blogs were telling you this could not even run Flash , now we all know which tablet cannot run Flash even into it's second generation... even with a 9 times faster gpu ...! Seriously I am constantly impressed by what the Ion and Atom pairing in the joojoo can do , I was expecting the game to be a total frame by frame slide show , but take a look see. Now if only some manufacturer could wake up to the idea that we want an i7 Windows 7 tablet with discrete ( or equivalent ) graphics. Ironically 1 year after the "blogs" declared joojoo dead , it is currently the most powerful gaming tablet in the world ,with more compatibility and choice of real games than any rival , from DOS to Unreal Engine to Cryengine 3 , all are possible on the humble Atom powered Fusion Garage Joojoo. If any one can help with tweaking the settings for Crysis 2 further please let me know  and I will post a follow up . So forget l33t gaming and welcome the dawn of the il33t3rati !

How far are we away from a true Windows 7 gaming tablet ? That is what I need to know , this  is the second Windows  7 tablet I have running Crysis 2 ( see the video below for the i5 dual screen Acer Iconia playing Crysis 2 with Intel HD GPU), it is the 3rd ( counting Libretto , Iconia and Joojoo) that I have running full games  , developers and hardware designers can no longer ignore the vast hunger for tablets , tablets that run FULL PC games , on FULL OS like Windows 7 , this time next year or in fact maybe later this month thegameveda WILL be playing Crysis 2 at 30fps + on a fourth Windows 7 tablet , the tech is getting better every day , the joojoo with Windows 7 is 1 year  old technology but still outdoes any other tablet for straight up PC gaming .

We used to spend 1000s upgrading l33t pcs to play major releases , I could show you the same game running at 100fps at 5120 by 1600 , but that is so.. boring! I want a game optimized so  I can run it from a Windows 7 tablet , or at least stream it through onlive or Gaikai  as well as being able to play on a gaming rig.

Why? well I am from the Crysis generation  and Crysis still barely runs on today's hardware , only recently beginning to achieve the fps  that every other game engine managed almost a decade ago ( and that is on today`s hardware).

Cryengine 3 and Crytek will survive on how they optimize Cryengine 3 , and not on pushing sales of l33t gaming rigs . Console game sales will not be enough , you need to tap into the vast PC gaming and now PC tablet gaming fan base .

In 2007  thegameveda felt it cool to build a 3k rig to get a few more fps from the chugfest that still is Crysis ( whilst every other game ran at 200 fps!)  in 2011 thegameveda finds it uber cool to call for the formation of the il33t3rati ( no hoody or Animus required), a gaming brother/sisterhood that strives to run the most high spec games on the lowliest of hardware thereby forcing lazy coders who depend on the endless hardware upgrade cycle to wake up to the future , optimize their code , or if too lazy then at least stream their games using services like  onlive and Gaikai that make hardware irrelevant

Star Trek Bridge Commander on the Toshiba Libretto Dual Screen Tablet PC

Someone once said "make it so ".. so here it is more Larry Holland and Totally Games magic on the the magical device that is the Toshiba Libretto . And whilst some tablets, even into their 2nd iteration  still cannot run Flash , or cry at thought of running a full OS , thegameveda is happily playing on a tablet that definitely was created with a make it so Trek philosphy:

Running this game on other tablets is a total pain , not because of hardware issues , but because most Windows 7 tablets do funny things to screen rotation  in software  , on the joojoo to play this game you need to flip screen orientation , and then play with external mouse and keyboard . There is no hardware cursor option so touch will not work on the LCARS panels ( yet ! but it will when thegameveda gets through with it!) .

On the Libretto is a simple install , set the game to 32 bit , rev up the settings ( yes really) and like wow , you just made it so .. Mr Scott would be proud ...

Next on thegameveda you need to see functioning LCARS on a handheld 7 dual screen tablet PC , and you will with the finest Star Trek game ever created .....

meanwhile:
