Whilst there is the usual buzz with all major softcos setting up real shop at gamescom 2012 , this year it is accompanied with a cloud of digital retail shop activity with every major publisher positioning its digital delivery service as direct competition to the likes of Steam. No longer are publishers tied to physical retail shops, with stock, delay and staff vs customer battles for the last copy of game x...
So far this week we have had Square Enix launch Final Fantasy VII through their online store, whilst onlive are plugging their cloud gaming service with another sale , EA have a gamescom sale too for pre orders of games that may not see the light of day till 2014 ,THQ too and of course Steam,Impulse(Gamestop) and Gamers Gate and Desura have their own sales .All of which are going to cost me too much money and I will be covering over the next few days.
Developers delivering content directly to users is nothing new in the world of PC indie gaming but right now we have the largest number of major softcos delivering content directly to gamers bypassing the likes of Steam altogether.
