We all know the great Jobs campaigned on a ticket of No tablets smaller than the original 9.7 inch iPad ...if you talked of one smaller in your Apple Temple you would be hissed or sniggered at ... today in the finest new tradition of Romnesia, Apple has thrown its policy out of the window ... or should that be out because of Windows 8.
No news yet though if Johnny Ives et al are including the hallowed Apple finger sharpener that barefoot Steve promised us would be required ...
How will the tablet world react to this iTurn? Well probably like an incumbent President surprised in a first debate but practised and ready to pounce in a third...
Windows 8 more readily Windows 8 Pro is going to change the tablet space altogether . You know how you use your iPad as an adjunct to your PC, in a few days time you will be using you PCs and tablets together with Windows 8 Pro or using your PC as a tablet with all the full options a full desktop brings.
So the mini smacks of desperation, coming so close to the Windows 8 launch. Without Steve , Apple seem listless, knee jerk, all design and less and less substance presented using the word A-M-A-Z-I-N-G so many times you`d think they copyrighted it.
My new iPad is an essential part of my daily life, it is the device I use at this time though and very soon it will be replaced by a similar sized Windows 8 Pro tablet. People have been waiting eagerly for this day. The day when full operating systems run on tablets as A-M-A-Z-I-N-G in design terms as the iPad and using which we can do away with closed eco systems Android and iOS included.
Apple needed to announce a Macbook Air Touch or Pro with iOS merging with Mountain Lion. And I predict that they will to counter the avalanche of Windows 8 lat pop tablets days away. So Johnny and co are due for a second bout of Romnesia ...currently if you go in to your Apple Temple and ask for an Air Touch they will give you the old Jobs line about no one wanting to tap a vertical screen... the next Mac book Air or Pro will have touch or I will eat my new iPad...
The mini is nice packing cameras too . But it is not going to be a £159 or $159 Kindle Fire HD or Google Nexus 7 beater. For the iPad Mini is not an attempt by Apple to enter the The iPad mini just continues the downward spiral away from the genius that created the Apple of Steve Jobs 2nd tenure as CEO.
The iPad Mini seems to be aimed at raising the price people are expected to pay for a 7 inch tablet ..and this strategy may have worked with the iPad but it is risky for Apple.
And what does this say about Apples confidence in the iPad, so was a 9.7 inch tablet a mistake after all, one that you cannot hold in your hand?
I cannot tell if Apple is fighting from the point incumbent or challenger for the role of Tablet leader of the world... The confused and panicked way in which this release is timed to take on Windows 8 and the Android horde and not at the official Apple keynote comes across as desperate.
For Google Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HD and Windows 8 RT tablet sales are not going to be damaged by the mini. And in any case it is not hardware that Apple should be worried about it is software, the real change that happens this Friday is not the release of Windows 8 Surface RT tablets, but the beginning of Windows 8 Pros dominance of touch based devices.
We are fed up with eco systems and walled gardens , ask Charlie Sheen . You see the tablet using population is also about to suffer its own bout of Romnesia making closed eco systems pushed by iOS and Android as relevant as the Vinyl ,DVD and CDs that they replaced ...
Its getting stale all this self pontificating, amazing this amazing that , Aluminium on Glass ( you know how hot that gets new iPad fans) so I like millions of others will pass on the iPad Mini.
The prices have to come down , that is what sells Google Nexus 7s and Kindle Fires or Samsung Galaxy Tabs.. But then if you can get an iPad Mini for less than £200 why buy a £700 new iPad .. none of this makes sense it is as if Apple is just firing off shots fueled by drinking too many carrot and barley smoothies in the vain hope of holding on to their temporary position as platform leader.
Hardware and design are obsessions at Apple, but they have neglected software , this Friday it will be a piece of software not hardware that takes Apple down. That is the credo of Microsoft creating a need for software , so Ives and co can carry on talking about diamond cut chamfers ..sorry AMAZING diamond cut chamfers ..it doesn't matter to the 100s of millions about to go Windows 8 Pros way.
Now if Apple announced a Mac Air Touch with a full touch enabled Mountain Lion/Goat what ever OS or that beautiful Retina Pro display Macbook Pro with Pen and touch then maybe they would be getting my money this week instead of it going Microsofts way ...
