For since the dawn of DOS it has been said pc gaming was dying , but that`'s a velvet lie and pc gamers know it . 30 million of us that is 3 times the Warcraft nation , are registered ,gaming on and buying from Steam . Congratulations to Valve , Gabe and the gang.
You cannot beat Steam for content delivery , sales and servers , and ALL OF THIS WITHOUT A MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION FEE Mr Microsoft/Sony accountant!
The greatest achievement of Steam is the kudos now associated with people actually buying games . In no uncertain terms Valve and Steam have done more to tackle piracy through the respect they have earned from their gamer population, than any of the futile Draconian copy protection system that publishers have attempted or the "authorities" attempts to chase down the peer2peer upstarts.
In 2010 it is juster cooler to own your games , than pirate them , Valve and Steam made this happen .Their focus is not just on major publishers and releases many real world examples exist of independent coders that have been saved through publishing on Steam .
Every core gamer , wants to have the Steam version of a game , yes the wiser ones may wait till Christmas and seasonal sales , but the Steam version is the one to own.
Oh and regarding the myth that PC gaming is in decline , I think if you check with Sony Microsoft and Nintendo accountants , they will confirm that console gaming has been in decline since the original next gen consoles were release in 1995/6 .
Digital content delivery , cloud storage , these are things Valve foresaw BEFORE the technology , was in our hands to exploit them , so hats off again to Valve.
It will be interesting to see what happens when the first Steam run console games , like Portal 2 hit , and if this finally shakes up PSN and XBox Live from their paid for , limited download number [5 for PSN] ,locked to one console/machine outdated models.
The PC is ever evolving , even Steve likes Valve so much he allowed Steam in our Macintels , as such PC gaming and Steam will always prosper and adapt , leaving consoles to mop up the casuals , who themselves are just really future pc gamers and Steam fans like us now aren't they ?
