Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is Criterion`s finest , as a game its mechanics take you right back to the original Need for Speed and Road Rash for that matter. If you cannot see changes between the 2002 and 2010 version of the game in the mashup above , that is the point . For with this game series the road and scenery though lovely , is really just 3 lines , one to guide you and the other two twisting and undulating never ending into the horizon . This is your game space , the space in which you need to take down the bad guys or escape the good guys throw in your own music , a free roam mode , and of course weapons and jammers and you have a perfect pure arcade game , there are no major obstacles or short turns , there isn't even that much traffic or a pedestrian populated town . Anything that could have spoilt the pursuit or escape game mechanic has been gutted , leaving a pure zone game . This is genius and very brave and it all comes together perfectly .
Astonishing that when every other race driver game is turning simulation to the point you have to get a driving licence to play , or be over 50 and still wearing jeans with a curly hairdo from the 60s to justify your purchase, EA and Criterion sat down at the design stage and took the brave decision to turn out a pure arcade thriller . True to the originals game mechanics.
You can also feel the influence of D.I.C.E. in the way the multi player , seemingly open world , competitive and progressive game play structure pans out . I swear it feels like driving Tanks around at speed on those quaint islands back in Codename Eagle , but maybe that`s just my rose tinted spectacles acting up again...
