Acer Iconia multitasking test XI : Playing Mass Effect 2 on Steam whilst playing Mass Effect 2 on GAIKAI

thegameveda could never decide whether to be Miss or Mr Sheppard in Bioware's latest multiple choice ( to be expected from ex medical students  )  extravaganza

Now thanks to the dual touch screens of the Acer Iconia we all can be  Miss Sheppard and Mr Sheppard at the same time , today's  test stresses the wifi n of the Acer Iconia , using Gakai to play Mass Effect in Screen 2 , whilst also stressing the CPU and Intel HD GPU , and hard disk by playing Mass Effect 2 on screen 1 using Steam  , running the game at respectable ,for tablets and laptops ,1366 768 res.

As you can see the  Acer Iconia has excellent wifi n broadband capabilities : Running Gaikai WHILST running a full Steam game  .Using Gaikai is extremely tasking on your Internet connection the slightest interruption can cause your screen to turn into a Vulcan Transporter malfunction . But not on Iconia !

Gaikai is  promising tech that I have been waiting to comment on , waiting because it's potential has yet to fully realised or decided , at the moment it requires an intensely stable broadband connection . Gaikai unlike onlive is still in Beta , and runs on Java beans , and sometimes it seems those beans get stuck in the machine turning your screen to garbage , or causing fuzzy artifacts . But that is on lesser machines , on the Acer Iconia as you can see in the video , there is no screen tearing and no locking up.

We can also see that the Acer Iconia Intel HD GPU coupled with the i5 GPU and 4 GB of DDR3 , give you a pretty potent gaming experience , far exceeding all the synthetic benchmarks , the Iconia is also the only tablet packing a 640 gb hard disk , so you really can bring a significant chunk of your Steam collection with you . Or at least one or two of the latest games . HDD space is irrelevant when using streaming services like Gaikai

Gaikai is something to wake up and pay attention to , together with the likes of Onlive , and the more traditional Steam , Impulse , and perhaps AWOMO  , these are the technologies that are evolving video gaming , largely independent of hardware ,platform holder or  OS .

Just a short time ago  the only expected  advances in gaming were totally hardware upgrade  dependent  with the boffins at iD , Digital Extremes ,Crytek,  nVidia , ATI, AMD and Intel  fuelling the endless upgrade cycle.

Gaikai is from  Shiney person Dave Perry, he of Every one's a Wally and Pyjamarama fame , ( or Earthworm Jim and MDK fame to our US cousins). Here is a guy who unlike that most beloved  famously harsh self critic Peter I promised you a Miracle Molyneux actually delivers .

Dave the Embedder:

There were signs of GAIKAI even in Dave Perry's earliest classics , Pyjamarama and Everyones a Wally , all contained full games  embedded and running within windows ( they were called screens in those days ) within the main games . It was a pleasure to seek out these hidden games  , Space Invaders with kitchen utensils +/- colour clash = awesome .  20 odd years later and Dave returns now embedding games in what we call browsers on something called the Internet...

Gaikai has come a long way , in the last couple of months , below you can see some grabs of  it running full screen on a joojoo tablet . Mass Effect 2 running from a browser  , any game can be demoed this way , any game could be run this way ....  wow 20 years and all the colour clash is gone .. brings tears to an old ZX Spectrum owners eyes....and Yvonne is looking pretty cool too....

those spikes along Jokers arms are signs of stream failure and not our pal Seth reverting to his Werewolf Buffy previous self. The capture is from a test I did on Gaikai using a joojoo tablet last month ..happily  these flaws are gone from Gaikai in it's present form , as you can see from the Acer Iconia video , even playing a Steam game at the same time does not interrupt the stream on the Acer Iconia and Joker looks sharper than ever...

A year ago I would not have believed  something like GAIKAI could work , I had hopes , which is why when the world turned iPad , I got hold of at least 2 Windows tablets  as well, and waited. A year on we have both Onlive , GAIKAI ,Unity powering the likes of Battlestar Galactica online from browsers ,  a nice twist in the  evolution of gaming , independent of hardware and software monopolies  , with the cloud making hardware choices irrelevant , all that matters is your Internet connection and if your  machine can run a full OS and browser ..your $1000 tablet can run a full browser and OS can't it ?... sorry iOS and Android fans!

Try it for yourself ... here  at GAIKAI , just wait for the pop up at the bottom of the screen!

For a limited time you can get Mass Effect 2 free when you purchase an EA game , your best option  the EA store which has a 50% off sale on this Easter weekend. Crysis 2+Mass Effect 2 for £17.95 ,not bad !

Mass Effect 2 played on an Atom powered joojoo as fast as your l33t pc ..faster infact!......
