Siliconmicrodisplay ST1080 review part XV:Layered Multi Screening exploiting the transparency of the ST1080

This blog entry was

1.Started on my transparent ST1080 screen with video and apps  in Windows 8 running on my laptop screen behind the ST1080 which I can see through to.

2.Completed  on my laptop screen whilst looking through the transparent  ST1080 HMD  on 0 brightness as a layered 2nd display

The X220T used was  running Windows 8 in 1080p res , Metro Apps including Muzo TV , Windows Media Player , Internet Explorer 10,Weather App and Chrome and various games.Input methods were external keyboard , mouse , touch screen and pen .

We go about things this long winded way to see how working and playing with a 10 %  transparent display changes our lives..

To exploit the transparency of the ST1080 we have to prepare :

First set up Windows to High Contrast Black mode and your displays to extended mode , with your laptop display set below the larger ST!080 display This gives you a virtual white text floating on your real background display , yes you could switch the background to red and feel all Terminator..

yes you can !
Right now I have the MUZE TV App running on my laptops screen playing for some reason Slipknots Duality , the sound of which is being pumped into my ears from the ST1080s in ear buds . The text you see here is floating above the music video on the ST1080 just as Arnold's is in the picture above , only with less impending carnage. As I look through to the video on the background ,I could just as easily be keeping an eye on the News , sport , or be at some tech convention live blogging the keynote of the latest cult CEO that Kalifornia throws up ... The high contrast black background is the one to use if you want to use the the displays transparency as a benefit and your real world background is something you need to see . If were typing this is a normal white blogger window with black text , I would see far less of the background .

And yes my head is bobbing to the video playing behind my work display. The text is excellent , yesterday I did this test with the video playing on the ST1080 through which I was look to a blogger window on my laptop. Reading text on a hmd can be a disconcerting experience , so if you do not have the eyes for it you can simply keep your work window on the PC and use the transparent ST1080 display for video or other apps.

I love the razor sharp text on the ST1080 , yes your eyes take time to adjust , in fact right now my eyes just focused so I can see perfect text across my see through virtual display  , this is a new sensation , a new way of working , or killing your eyes .. but you could easily Tweet , facebook , email whilst watching your tv , or garden for that matter .

In a few months we will all be using Windows 8 slates, and I can see through the ST1080 to my touch screen , and the Windows 8 Metro Wall below and can easily swipe across the tiles to some app I need . With the high contrast black setting this text is now bold white in blogger and the Windows 8 Metro wall is all cool white vector boxes ,  and here's a first for using touch screens , I see my hand behind my main ST1080 display , and for that matter the pen too .

Right now lets switch ,  moving the mouse to the top right corner of the ST1080 display brings up the Windows 8 charms , hit the tiles icon and I have moved the Windows Metro Wall (and therefore desktop) to the ST1080s transparent display, with the high contrast black setting I can easily see through to the laptop display behind , like having a virtual Windows 8 metro wall superimposed on my background , now Slipknot's Duality crowd are right in my face.

As the video is bright I need to switch the Chrome browser back to its normal black on white background display on the laptop , over which Slipknot and friends are now virtually shredding their place of habitation...

With the text on the laptop there is 0 distortion , none of that adjustment you make when typing on the HMDs display .

And if I turn down the brightness to 0 on the ST1080 reading the text becomes even easier . Even at 0 brightness setting the video of now Ozzy playing on the ST1080 makes an excellent virtual desktop , hey you could even blog about his performance whilst watching it.

Looking up to sunlight ( not the SUN people that will damage you!) will mostly wipe out the image at this setting.

The Image quality , and clarity is far far more impressive ,than you would expect with the light blocker off and in daylight , blacks are black , whites are white , I have Devour playing now, selecting videos from my virtual Muzo TV wall , if I look up to my white ceiling with the ST1080 on  0 brightness all the image is still there the whites look white , this music video is itself  set in  in a bright white loft, with the band wearing blacks,  I can look down through the video to this text , if I move my head to the music the text on my laptop stays still, the image of the Metal bands moving with my movements.

This is at 0 brightness , most impressive , if I turn up to two thirds brightness the ST1080 lights out the white walls of my room , and against the black desktop monitors the image is almost exactly the same as with the light blocker on . As it gets darker or if I draw the blinds there will be little discernible  difference between using the ST1080 with the light blocker on or off.

I am going to turn the brightness back to 0 to get maximum transparency whilst I type , and turn the volume up ...

Using the ST1080 in this way we are exploiting the transparency and LCOS tech idiosyncrasies. In this scenario even if you could use the OLED displays of the HMZT1s transparently ( after ripping off it's casing and voiding your warranty) , the black advantages and colour differences are all negated, you could never move your head to the music and the resolution of the display would be far lower.

When I talk of the HMZT1 and ST1080 being very different devices this is what I mean ,  I mean I have Ozzy rocking out virtually in front of me and through that transparent video I am typing this entry .

Rock on !

Of course you can have many different scenarios , but right now this is a cool testing regimen for me.

And there are so many for this device , it is not the blacks the resolution the weight , the price that sets the ST1080 apart it is the versatility.

I just reached for my drink took a sip and put it back on the desk without spilling it , try doing this wearing a HMZT1 !

There are so many uses . When we work on our PCs or Macs even if they are Retina displayed or 2560 1600 pixels worth 30 inch LCDS  , even 4k we move from window to window , doing so you take your eye off one app to look at another .

Take Windows 8 it has the most innovate pane mode if I want to check the weather I can bring up the weather app and swipe it into a pane , or split my desktop and have a weather site in a browser but with a transparent HMD like the ST1080 I no longer have to open another window or take my eye off this text I am typing. FYI I just launched media player in the transparent ST1080 display , selected some music and brought up the weather app in Windows 8 right now I can adjust what I am listening to and see a floating real time weather forecast  layered over this text I am typing on the laptop screen behind.

The 1080p res makes for very sharp display of Windows 8 apps . If I lose my cursor because the Windows 8 X220T has a touch screen I can just touch where I want to continue typing from and thanks to the transparency of the ST1080 I can see my hand , very cool if you have a low Midichlorian count .

On the ST1080 display which has the Win 8 Metro Wall running I navigate using a mouse where you are simply highlights in light blue so it is easy to navigate, right now I have an IE10 window open and I am off to Steam to check their summer sale, with the high contrast black setting for Windows 8 I can see the text as white floating above this laptop screen   . Many deals most of which I have already but all of which I can check without taking my attention off this work screen , hold on just cast my vote for todays deal.

There are real benefits to having a 100 inch virtual display in addition to your laptop or even desktop muliscreen ( this is going to be my 3rd monitor when connected to my desktop)

So another day of working with a transparent hmd with the light blocker removed and we can see or I at least I can  that the 1080p res gives you a razor sharp head up display that you can layer over your desktop, tablet, phone or laptop display or displays, which really comes into its own when used in conjunction with Windows 8  allowing you to layer multi screen with ease, exploit touch and handwriting. If you find the text on hmds freaky the transparency of the ST1080 will let you use your laptop, desktop, retina displayed iPad or macbooks display as the main text entry display , whilst the transparent ST1080 carries out other duties. And the uses are endless .

Ok so now I am going to play a little Xwing Tie Fighter using NaclBox in Chrome on the ST1080 , if I look through I need to turn the brightness up on the ST1080 to around two thirds to get a clearer image but folks I am playing away

100 inch transparent Tighfighter running in Chrome and Dos on NACLBOX , overlayed over my real world room . And I can see through to my keyboard to control it , remember all those fiddly controls?

I have picked this on purpose to show  , blacks are irrelevant when you chose a transparent display , they just have to be good enough , looking at black background like my monitor gives me a jet black background , but the black in this game also makes it perfect for transparent gaming when you want to see your surroundings like say typing this text on my laptop screen,

OK time for some Wolfenstein 3D back when the two Johns were still at iD and what can I say I am playing in daylight with the brightness up two thirds black looks black with black background and still black enough when you look into light, all the colours are bright enough to play , too bright actually so I will have to turn them down to see this text through the screen properly.

Looking up to the bright white roof of my room and the blacks retain their blackness enough to let you work and play this way without the light blocker on and with added benefit of keeping an eye on your surroundings , remember it will take a few seconds for your eyes to focus on your layered view when it does though the text and colours are razor sharp , i can see the bright white Chrome window , with Wolfenstein playing in the middle if you have trouble reading smaller fonts you need to adjust Windows settings , the same is true for a 2560 by 1600 display , I constantly zoom in on my desktop displays because the res is so high.

Now let's try some transparent Skyrim the game is running on the ST1080 and I am typing this through on the X220T display underneath .With a dark black monitor screen behind the image is excellent , in detail and contrast  , looking down to my laptop again the image goes transparent but you could easily play Skyrim this way .

Now for some Modern Warfare 3 , so now I have MW3 in 1080p layered over my desktop , everyone else thinks I am working.

Lets try the black background test with my dell 30 incher switched off in bright daylight with brightness set to 2 thirds the blacks are almost exactly the same as having the light blocker on , I can look through and exploit the transparency to type this text on my laptop screen , lets try the over reactor stage again. And I can see that New York harbour , the colours are rich and vibrant , look through to a dark background , or even my plain white ceiling and the the image is so bright the light does not distort it.

Really the thing to do if you want to use this on a  journey is to sit behind some friendly Goth or Emo , a good un faded Metallica T should do it, seriously just take a little black coat or jacket set it up on the seat and you have perfect black levels, but I must say the image looks almost as sharp with a plain white background. And you can always adjust the brightness to mute out or increase your view of the real world.

FPS games like MW3 have an amazing level of immersion with HMDS ,so time to sit further back from my laptop and play i can still see the laptop screen through the ST180 , it looks like a small window in the far larger ST1080 display , lets watch the new trailer for black ops 2 whilst we play MW3...

Now for Sins of A Solar Empire Rebellion the intro is playing and the detail is astonishing  there are fleets of space ships battling on my ceiling ... really ... I can see through to type this and switch back to playing the game .

There is something about using the ST1080 that makes the image and colours sharper when you are letting light in , and you retain your view  of and presence in the real world ..

What we have here is a layered multi screen transparent display experience , something totally different to your normal display .Do not think of this in terms of of grading traditional displays. This is different tool for a different job.

I can now work and game in daylight with sunlight around and in front of me , I can use the ST1080 as a third or 4th monitor layered over my other screens , with the arrival of transparent light weight wearable displays like the ST1080 the HMD is finally taking steps away from being a niche Audio Video phile obsession.

To Hades with blacks and fovs , there is nothing that gives you the experience and multitude of usage options that the ST1080 does right here right now.  With that I am off to dig up some Terminator and Aliens Vs Predator games...
