This entire Blog entry is being composed wearing the ST1080, using it as my sole display. This is day 3 of my using the ST1080 without the light blocker, during the test I am in a room going from full bright day light through to darkest night .Which gives rise to these freaky photos .
Starting off in daylight with the the bright white walls of my room and the ST1080 image maintains its clarity, using a white background for Chrome I can look up at the sky through the ST1080 and still see the text, with the chrome window becoming transparent. If the object behind the screen does not generate light or is not reflecting it , you will not see it, for instance as the room gets darker towards sunset , or as the tweens call it twilight, I can wave my hand in front of the light blocker less ST1080 and see no movement or hand, it is just like having the light blocker on ..
This is being typed and penned using the Lenovo X220T, both my 30 inch LCDs are off, as is my X220Ts tablet display. Switching the Lenovo's display off keeps its touch and pen functions active .So to the rest of the world it looks like I am scribbling on to a switched off tablet screen, I however can see the pen cursor on the ST1080 and using Windows 8 handwriting recog can continue to scribble this blog, with the tablet in my hands or on a desk. I cannot see the tablet or pen don't need to. I can see the pen cursor :
A killer feature of the ST1080 in my experience is that the text is razor sharp, this sentence stretches across the 100 inch display and does not distort. Of course nothing compares to a desktop LCD for long periods of serious work . And your individual eye health, strengths and weakness will effect how you can use a device like this for work. Ideally you need the combined skills of an optometrist and a hat maker to fit each set to each persons head and eye measurements.
It's transparency Jim but not as we know it. As I typed this entry the sun set , giving me a nice real sunset for a desktop, but as dusk approached and I looked up through my large sky light windows I can see nothing behind the display of my ST1080, it is exactly as if I had kept the light blocker on . The way the transparency works is if something generates light it will show up behind your ST1080 display , but as the ST1080 is an awesomely bright display you will likely not see through it at all, so with the black on white of blogger all I can see is the the text I am typing, similarly yesterday when I was playing Spec Ops The Line in similar circumstances I could see no difference from having the light blocker on or off. The colours brightness, blacks all were comparable to having the light blocker on. To exploit the transparent effect , use a black background and high contrast setting. Similarly if you watch a movie on the ST1080 and turn down the brightness you can look through to your background, like say your laptop screen and work on that as a second screen as I did in yesterday's test.
It takes bright sunlight or light sources to bleed through the ST1080 image, even then you get an awesome effect of a holographic display on your background surroundings. Yesterday I was playing Sins of A Solar Empire Rebellion with attack ships on fire over the shoulder of ..my brother ... if you could see what I have seen with my ST1080 eyes...sorry.. !
Throughout the day when typing this , the bright sunlight bouncing off the white walls of my padded ce...errh room could not penetrate the ST1080s image. This is excellent news if you want to work whilst commuting or watch films or play a few games , you can of course tweak the brightness to change the level of light coming through to your eyes from the background .In any given normal work place scenario the ST1080s display is not going to be washed out by the light surrounding you. Who knew?
Turn the brightness up on the ST1080 and you will see less or none of your real worldbackground . Imagine you are on a fast moving train journey that moving landscape becomes your desktop background, Hudson in Predator 2 or what? Tweak the brightness and you can light out the background but still see the trains LED announcement of your stop . What happens if you play some high speed racing or fps game on a portable transparent display, on a 120 mph train ? If I can survive being mugged, then that is going to be an interesting test.
I think I will take a break just take the ST1080 off and hassle my Mountain Dew walla for some of Cartman's favourite nectar.. in seconds I have slipped the ST1080 back on and we are back up to speed.
Time for some music for some reason I cannot get Keanes A Bad Dream out of my head , and as soon as the music starts I am bobbing my head. In actual fact I have been moving my head and neck around all the time whilst using the ST1080 to type this entry. And this is another killer feature, most VDU and LCD display related health problems come from us constantly having to maintain one posture to maintain focus on whatever we are working or playing, when you use your desktop or laptop you are transfixed to the display.Your head and neck are locked.
When using the ST1080 I started noticing I was moving my neck and head around and every where I move, the display moves too. So if I want to look up at the sky, I can and my pc display follows me. Throw some music on and your head will start to sway and bob too, just like it would wearing headphones.
Then consider the wearable ( once you heat shield the control unit and solar power your T shirt ) possibilities...
Overall I find that whole experience of using the ST1080 far more pleasant in a brightly lit environment with the light blocker off or on . You are more connected to your surroundings at all times, you can see where you dropped your mouse, reach down to your keyboard look out to the periphery to see who is beside you or with the light blocker off right through the display if you use a high contrast black desktop setting.
The 1080p res means you can have multiple windows and Metro Apps running alongside easily so using Windows 8.
Are there any people who would find it useful to be able to keep an eye on a transparent display whilst bobbing their heads along to music? Like say a couple of DJs who need to see their crowd get visual feedback and feed that back into their decks which they can see transparently displayed over the crowd and literally see the bpm rise with crowd ????????? Both the crowd and the DJs riffing off direct visual feedback..without the DJ having to look down at a turn table.. And with that it is time for some TRON: Legacy Reconfigured
If I were siliconmicrodisplay I would get a set of ST1080s to Daft Punk pronto, along with a couple of battery packs of course ... The performance of the ST1080 with the light blocker removed allows you to DJ this way from dark night time raves to bright sunlit beaches from Miami to Ibiza for shizzle!..
