77 million PlayStation Network users at the mercy of Sony's incompetence and or alleged hackers
Sony is to blame for the vulnerability in their system , the arrogance that allowed the vulnerability to go unchecked. And most of all Sony is to blame if your credit card and personal details are now being sold to the lowest bidder.
The writing has been on the PlayStation wall for a long time , a now celebrity list of benign hackers has constantly shown vulnerabilities in the PlayStation OS and network.
Instead of criminally and legally pursuing kids Sony should have been hiring the likes of geohot or whatever his tag was , to highlight the weaknesses in their system.
If you too are one of the 77 million , placed at risk by Sony's arrogance , then join thegameveda in praying this is just a benign hacker out to prove a point ,to muddy Sony's nose .
A week into this and it has gone from a mild annoyance at not being able to play Portal 2 on PSN , to the single most potentially serious foul up for consumers in the history of video games or for that matter e-commerce.
This is Sony? thegameveda can hear the heavy purring of white cats being stroked by Steves Jobs and Ballmer ......who do you think will carve up Sony first?

No PSN ? So what ? Time to use that PC
In a shocking turn of events millions of PSN users are without access to Sony's online service . This is a great advert for Steam , and PC gaming in general .The latest and most highly rated Steam game Portal 2 , launched in time to coincide with the PSN outage , includes both the PC and PS3 PSN versions in its box . Now millions of , or lets say a few hundred thousand PS3 users can simply bypass the PSN outage and play the PC version instead.
The indestructible nature of the open Internet as a gaming platform is why in the age of consoles everyone who is serious about gaming should be doing so on a PC as well. And fans need to keep the pressure on developers to avoid closed server models .
Any closed environment whether PSN ,Xbox live . iOS , or recent acts like removing the ability to run dedicated servers for major PC games , just leaves the companies behind these products open to hostile attacks , like the one taking down PSN at the moment .
There is no fall back option , so a single incident can take down an entire company , like last years clock malfunction on the PS3,the present attack , or lets say the password scare on payment for iOS Apps last year .
It seems in seeking to strictly control access to their exclusive content, these companies and more importantly their customers , whose details , including credit card details are all handled by controlled gateways like PSN , are vulnerable to attack. .
Sony Apple and Microsoft need to protect their business by using more open Internet related models for their online networks and games, right now it is clearly all too easy to throw a spanner in the works and shut down an entire platform . All three have faced problems in the last year alone.
These problems are never going to happen to your PC, so dust it off get to Steam , and get your Portal fix there , This may also be a good time to back up your PS3 hard disk , as who knows if the games are still going to be on your account when you log on , when they get PSN back up and running finally!

Over 100 million PSN and SOE accounts hacked : the end of online gaming as we know it?
So for a week now thegameveda has joked about the Sony PSN hack , today whilst checking JUNK MAIL , thegameveda found the official warning of the SOE hack . My beloved PC gaming nirvana has been threatened. This is the 4th online mess I have personally faced in the last year , two from Apple and now two from Sony, all involving credit card detail theft or misuse and rooted in weak security for online stores and payment methods .
Thegameveda correctly predicted that the hackers would not be happy with 77 million PSN accounts , and now the score is up to over 100 million , including the latest SOE , PC accounts , data that Sony stored partially unencrypted since 2007 !
The key thing here is this data goes back to 2007 , you may have to check all your old email addresses for the warning , it would be safest to just get onto SOE and delete your account , they always told us video games were bad for our health ! so now would be a great time to ditch Everquest , avoid that impeding divorce , and get a real life.
Going Dark :
Dig out that VCS , and play that wonderful Tank game , whilst the rebirth of 70 s style cartridges may be far fetched , there is now a major gap in the games market , a need that must be filled , and that is safe , personal detail entry/exchange free gaming , its not that hard to do really , we have been gaming without handing details over to media giants for over 30 years .
Come on you never had to hand over your bank details to play the best games of your youth now did you ? So why should the big boys ( now with their pants firmly pulled down and wedgied by recent hacks) expect you to do so with PSN , XBox live, SOE or any other online service.
This is a global Internet attack , that governments should be handling , that it started through a medium - online gaming - that many , including governments consider frivolous at best is irrelevant . Someone at a very senior level should be fixing this now , and they should not be relying on Sony.
Nations and global companies will fall:
The Sony PSN , and now SOE hack is the first global Internet disaster , clearly the biggest hack of all time , and is still going on .
In a week we have gone from an service outage , no explanation from Sony , to 77 million PSN accounts hacked and now over 100 million including PC accounts .
This is the greatest act of gross negligence by a company using the Internet for business in the short history of e-commerce and online gaming.
So we are up to 100 million , I truly believe there are hackers out there now pushing for 1 billion and if not that at the very least the first Total Global Internet Commerce Shutdown event in the history of the Internet.
Someone somewhere should be taking this very seriously, and they are which is why the media is treating it with frivolity to cover up the actual harm this is causing , as a 60 second news bite , with the obligatory badly facial haired geek gamer complaining about not being able to play with his "mates"
With 100 million and climbing affected should the Playstation Hack now be classified as a religion , a country , a movement ? or an army , perhaps the first Internet Pandemic ?
The knock on effects will propel this hack to over a billion people affected , and surely it cannot all be because of the lack of PSN and SOE security?
Do ya feel lucky CyberPunk?
They are asking us to change credit cards , ok , but they are also asking us to give them those new credit card details , when and if they fix this . Do you trust Sony ? Or do you trust the hackers to bypass the additional security?
If you missed the riff check out the original The Day The Earth Stood Still
And here is the text of the LATEST Sony Online Entertainment warning email , which considering my old email account is one of 100 million in possession of hackers , may or may not be real ! Remember to check your junk mail , and any email accounts that you were using circa 2007 !
| May 2, 2011 | ||||||
| Dear Valued Sony Online Entertainment Customer: | ||||||
| Our ongoing investigation of illegal intrusions into Sony Online Entertainment systems has discovered that hackers may have obtained personal customer information from SOE systems. We are today advising you that the personal information you provided us in connection with your SOE account may have been stolen in a cyber-attack. Stolen information includes, to the extent you provided it to us, the following: name, address (city, state, zip, country), email address, gender, birthdate, phone number, login name and hashed password. Customers outside the United States should be advised that we further discovered evidence that information from an outdated database from 2007 containing approximately 12,700 non-US customer credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes) – we will be notifying each of those customers promptly. | ||||||
| There is no evidence that our main credit card database was compromised. It is in a completely separate and secured environment. | ||||||
| We had previously believed that SOE customer data had not been obtained in the cyber-attacks on the company, but on May 1st we concluded that SOE account information may have been stolen and we are notifying you as soon as possible. | ||||||
| We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the attack and as a result, we have: | ||||||
| ||||||
| We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable. | ||||||
| For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When SOE’s services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your Station or SOE game account name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well. | ||||||
| To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. | ||||||
| We are committed to helping our customers protect their personal data and we will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. The implementation will be at a local level and further details will be made available shortly in regions in which such programs are commonly utilized. | ||||||
| We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at + 44 870-600-0267 (Monday to Friday 15:00 to 22:00 GMT excluding holidays) should you have any additional questions. | ||||||

Free post PSN SOE Hack games from Sony: Letting the Trojan Horse back in or smashing a Sony Piñata?
Get up stand up don't believe the hype
Over on the EU blog yesterday Sony announced its un-severance package , it's make up offer , like a very bad ex girl/boyfriend that comes back with an enticing offer ..after they have been caught abusing your credit card , and trust ....revealing private details to the world ..
Should you take them back , for like ancient Achaeans , they bare gifts (in this case of free games ), for your PS3 and PSP ( PSN was also not functioning in Homers time), is that enough for you to hand over your personal details , and shiny new credit card , and rekindle the old relationship ? What was that old presidential chestnut , fool me once .... fool me ag`in ..maybe we should all just change our PSN tags to Dubbya...
Sony CEO`s big pimpin` on the PS3
I am as inclined to offer Sony my new credit card as I would be inclined to offer it to an ex girlfriend turning up with a couple of free PS3 games ... The PSN hack needs to be resolved in court , in international court , no amount of short term security is going to protect either your personal or credit card details , unless and until an independent inquiry is conducted into the Sony PSN and SOE hacks .We do not need free games , we need full and free independent , government level investigation , we need court class actions to run their course .
The mouse that caught the cat ?
Sony is famously unhesitating in pursuing customers* who it sees harming it`s business, driving teenagers to flee their country for fear of prosecution, switching off or removing functionality as it sees fit , now it is customers who are going to pursue Sony . You will see ambulance chasers chasing mice chasing cats , big suited Sony cats through courts....and they will catch them !
*hackers were customers once....oh the humanity.....
Sony facing righteous fire from the 101 million dragons
Goliath is always the customer , not the company , as so many businesses these days forget ,customers pay their wages.Interestingly the offer of free games is announced for the EU first , Sony is stronger here than anywhere , but if legal action starts to take off ,the EU will take a far harsher stance with Sony than they would get in the USA or Japan , just ask Microsoft and Nintendo . In the EU this can happen and will happen without the need for ambulance chasing lawyers pursuing class actions.
Be the change that you want to see in the Internet
The Sony hack is an opportunity for you the 101 million dragons to change online gaming for ever
write/facebook/tweet /speak to your Senator or MP ( or benevolent dictator/monarch*,**)
1. demand strict and free peremanent Internet security from online companies that store our details And I mean government level encryption , protection and checks. So that any company that in the course of its function stores data ,not only encrypts it but protects it . Or they can go back to selling cartridges
2. demand a formal public open independent investigation into the Sony hack
3. demand that ALL online games companies and media companies have in future to adhere to the findings and recommendations of that inquiry :globally
4. Demand such companies pass a certification and are tested regularly
5.go to your window and scream I am as angry as hell and am not going to ta... sorry go watch Network
6. demand they do this now and are not allowed to bribe us with 2 or 3 free games and 1 year of free security , which we will have to pay for from next year and will likely be bypassed by the next lot of hackers.
7. Find the hackers , learn from them and create your protection protocol from that information , do not rely on scaremongering overcharging ineffectual Internet security firms seeking to exploit this situation.
8. download your free 2 ps3 games and PSP games , and have some fun gaming whilst the wheels of justice turn and make the Internet a better and safer place
* take special care when contacting dictators or Monarchs , in some cases they tend to be worse than global giants like Sony...... but hey.. Viva la revolucion!
** PSN may not be available in some territories run by absolute dictators or monarchs or in any territory where Sony is run by absolute incompetents ( in nice suits)
To restore confidence in Sony there needs to be high level resignation on both Eastern and Western fronts of the Sony empire , this will in the end benefit Sony and its 100s of millions of fans.
For the Sony hack is just the latest misfire by the heads of Sony in the USA, EU and Japan .
Over the last half decade Sony has gone from rock solid foundations with the most popular and innovative tech , to overpriced hardware launches , missing out on the entire mp3 /iTunes market , missing the tablet revolution , and falling behind Microsoft for core gamer money , and Nintendo for Casual . And now way behind Apple in everything from design , to delivery , price ,reliability and most damagingly brand kudos.
The PlayStation hack and Sony's downward spiral is caused by out of touch CEOs and management across its business model . Think how Steve Jobs or master Gates elevate Apple and Microsoft . Do any of the Sony heads do this ? even if they are recently knighted?
Sony should see the PSN hack as an opportunity to do some spring cleaning , clear the old boys from management and get some fresh new talent , perhaps poach some from Apple , Google et al.
The restoration of PSN and SOE services is allegedly happening as I type this , but it is happening without any public inquiry into the matter , within a week over 100 million people will have mostly entrusted Sony with new details and credit card information , all for the sake of 2 PS3 games and a maybe a PSP one , this is a Piñata , but it is also potentially a Trojan Piñata .
Governments need to pay attention to this , and not allow companies to get away with lax online security breaches.

2011 A PLAYSTATION NETWORK (hacking ) ODYSSEY ...at an end or just beginning?
the welcome back offers are going to be at
http://link.eu.playstation.com/r/40OT47Q/M30T5/3022DH/KOKNW/1VT5TK/52/h
( that looks scary!)
you can reset your password online here
http://link.eu.playstation.com/r/40OT47Q/M30T5/3022DH/KOKNW/AXVQVS/52/h
and do not forget your SOE account!
However do not jump in and add new card details just yet , there has been no explanation of what and how things transpired , instead take this opportunity to delete the old card details .And then wait because the 2011 Playstation Network Hack Odyssey is no yet over :
In Japan the government is following thegameveda's advice , first finding out why and how the attack happened , and seeking assurances from Sony , as a result their PSN is down for now. This is the correct way to handle an attack that hurt over 100 million people. Interesting that neither the USA or EU are taking a similar stance ...yet......
Until we find out exactly what happened , i.e. your government finds out what happened. like the Japanese government is doing so right now for it`s citizens , you should not update any new credit card details , whether you are in the USA or EU .
Whilst it can be argued that no system online is safe from hackers , you should also consider that only one system in recent history has had over 101 million account details taken with such ease and with the hackers still at large , and with no detailed independent public inquiry , and that I am sorry to say is PSN.
The question is how are we going to trust Sony from this point on?

Hackers take measures to hack the Sony PSN anti hacking measures ..?global conspiracy against gamers emerges..
The burning question in the continuing saga of the PSN hack , remains how many users are now afraid to get back into the Playstation Network waters , with their privates already completely exposed once , or twice ...You know what happened ..allegedly ... this is why and how :
The following is strictly confidential , and may have to be protected using that most British of institutions ... the super injunction...
Conspiracy theory no.732.1a/7-1001 : there was no PSN hack: with the entire "developed" Western and Eastern world facing economic ruin and birth rates dropping ( Japan are you listening) , easily explained by 101 million of said nations populations favourite waste of time/life video gaming , is there a global conspiracy to get us off our lazy b***s away from our consoles and take part in some useful activity ... like taking part in the economic recovery of our now failing nations , enacting democratic reforms , and or making babies?
Methodology : Switch of PSN : fix the Worlds most pressing problems : blame phantom hackers:
Evidence ( or lack there of ..total lack there of in fact) : Hey ..listen...! 101 million lazy gamers have not been at their PS3 online for almost a month , in that month Royals have been wed , the worlds most evil man rubbed out Tom Clancy style , the entire Arab world has embraced democracy and soon will be sipping from the sweet frappacino of freedom , maybe the PSN hack is what got people off their lazy b***s and allowed them to the important stuff like ridding their nations of dictators , completing operation Geronimo for real and not on Call of Duty ! , saving the Eurozone from total bankruptcy , and errh... finally getting married......in one particularly fine case....
Corroboration ( or complete lack thereof ) : Look for the following markers : 1. The world economy recovers .2 World Peace is achieved .3 Playstation Hack Baby boomers : Birth rates due to conception during the period PSN was down increase globally. 4. Winged Unicorns hold flying races with pigs...
Further corroboration : When the PSN hack of the measures to prevent the hack is over : the world economy continues to falter , Middle East peace talks fail and the Arab spring turns into Winter ... and also birth rates continue to decline in the "developed" world..see it wos PSN wot did it ...
!
Just think what could be achieved by mankind if someone turned off the entire internet and that would include you too smug Xbox live fans!

THE SONY HACKAPALOOZA CONTINUES AS MILLIONS SIGN UP TO PSN AGAIN MILLIONS HAVE THEIR DATA STOLEN FROM SONYPICTURES.COM
Thegameveda has been covering the 2011 Sony Hackapoolaza for a while now , this blog entry was supposed to be about PSN and the store coming back on line , but it is time for yet another Star Wars reference ...for the course of Sony Playstation Network Apocalyps3 2011 seems to be loosely (!) following the chapters of the seminal George Lucas Saga ( episodes good and bad ) so 1 day after gamers saw the Sony Empire Strike back we have a Return of the Hack or perhaps Revenge of the Hack (depending on whether you see them as Jedi or Sith ) as thegameveda forewarned in a treatise entitled Begun the Sony PSN resurrection has...
lets see the damage stats over 1 million SonyPictures.com voices have been suddenly silenced with their account details , you know the score name , address , password say dob all taken
A group called lulzsecurity or LulzSec if you want to be acute, has done this apparently to show how lax Sony security STILL is , even after the PSN debacle , they even have an official press release here ,and press actually rang up a little old lady to warn her ..they had all her details . see now that is respectful hacking , the little old lady has now changed her password , but since Sony is so lax with its users security it is only a matter of time before another nice hacking group rings her on her home number to ask her to change her password again..BECAUSE IT IS STORED IN PLAIN TEXT ! This is not a joke anymore ..
Heads have to roll at Sony , 100 million odd fans including thegameveda have just dared to boot up PSN and the Store again ,if we had doubts about the way Sony was handling our data before , now the whole thing is verging on the ridiculous .
As publisher foul ups go the current Sony Hackapalooza is a doozy ....
This needs a global holding to account of Sony Execs , and by every government whose country in which they do business , why is Sony being allowed to get away with something on this scale again and again , write your congressmen , in fact why not ask LulzSec for his/her phone number , tell them that you got the info because of the lax security that Sony is still operating
Security is not a service we should be paying for every Sony account we use , or hotmail or Google or Facebook for that matter , these companies make billions out of us , you would think they could spend a few million , or even $1 on providing security for all personal details.
It is time that governments demanded this and made it law . Write to yours and demand it . Till then it really is time to applaud the hackers like LulzSec for highlighting these dangers , don't believe me ? Just ask that little old lady who has by now made sure she demands Sony remove all her personal details , and that really is the way to get these global leviathans up to speed , by refusing to let them hold any of your details .
And in this case the hackers exposing Sony`s weak security fall into the Jedi rather than Sith category ...as Lucas refs go ...
as always apologies and thanks to Mr George Lucas , if you want to motivate him into making the holographic versions of the classics and episode 7,8,9 be sure to fund the effort by procuring Star Wars on Bluray
And I thought this week would be about dull E3 coverage .. more on that later

Free Playstation 3 and PSP games.. makeup PSX for jilted PSN users ...?
So your significant other ,PSN , left you for a month or so , well now he or she is back with the offer of some makeup PSX , in the form of Free PS3 and PSP games , shame then that these will be games we mostly own already ... but if you are ready or desperate to rekindle that old PSN flame ... then why be fussy ?
Just make sure you use protection , if engaging in PSX I would use the points card method myself as the original credit card method proved about 0% effective as protection methods go , and Fraud Protect is a joke that you will have to pay for after 12 months (and just wait till that gets hacked!), so be safe use PSN points cards , and for that matter Xbox Live Points cards ...
Of course there is always the safest PSX method : TOTAL ABSTINENCE from PSN !

Spain`s finest arrest Three PSN Hacking Anonymous Amigos .... no mas hack-a-la vista ...!
Most of us grew up with the notion of the benevolent Hacker , in the 80s we had the kid that through a spanner into a W.O.P.R.
The Sony Hacks did not just take down , in fact they did not take down in any way Sony , they damaged the little people you and me , you know the type of person the science fictional version of Hackers always purport to protect. The type of person who is going to stick to using PSN cards to purchase games in future!
So 3 of the Sony Hackers are caught , and there is nothing Neuromantic about what they did.
Who knows once they have had around 30 years in Levinworth , they may prove useful in taking down Wintermute .. or saving the world from a W.O.P.R. or two....
This just in the latest account Hack , Codemasters accounts have been leached and all your info is out there once again . Why bother , just throw it up on face book and fuggedaboutit.....
Hack-a-la vista baby.....

Sega is Hacked and it did not take ages ........
You just know another iTunes hack is on the way....................................
here is the official email text :
As you may be aware, the SEGA Pass system has been offline since yesterday, Thursday 16 June.
Over the last 24 hours we have identified that unauthorised entry was gained to our SEGA Pass database.
We immediately took the appropriate action to protect our consumers’ data and isolate the location of the breach. We have launched an investigation into the extent of the breach of our public systems.
We have identified that a subset of SEGA Pass members emails addresses, dates of birth and encrypted passwords were obtained. To stress, none of the passwords obtained were stored in plain text.

LulzSec add Eve Online , Minecraft , Escapist , Bethesda notches to their Hacking Tragedy...
So many intriguing questions surround LulzSec and none of them relate to that age old catch the Hacker chestnut ... their identity ...
No the most pressing questions re LulzSec include are they or aren't they ? Benign or malevolent? Are they a hacking equivalent of Mercutio , shouting a plague on both your houses to the every day lax security hack ready online companies and us the end user that so fallibly and readily enters every personal detail of our lives
Are LulzSec going to be the noughties equivalent of Tyler Durden , taking down the virtual strongholds of financial institutions...
2011 is the year the world woke up to hundreds of millions being hacked , and thegameveda predicted that this would inspire other groups of hackers to literally go for the 1 billion score , or literally hack the planet.
LulzSec are just one group , benign or malevolent , it does not matter , we need to adapt and have detail free online accounts , the equivalent of Paypal but for online account details ... not that , Paypal is immune from attacks ...
However just like Mr Shakespeare`s Mercutio , LulzSec should be wary , as just like Mercutio they may face an untimely demise for butting in where they are not welcome ,fighting a fight that really is not theirs....
This is a fight that our governments should be taking to the companies that regularly lose and or release our data so readily..
For yes I know that online security at practically every company is lax , but I do not need to have my data stolen by hackers and the companies that hold that data do not deserve to have their business and livelihood ruined just to prove a point.
So Lulzsec ....is it just not a brief Shakespearean act before the dagger you seek to stop actually ends up in your own back ?
And is not ..your play of hacking just a play of tragedy in the long term , for the Man , us , and yourselves?
Anon....
