Siliconmicrodisplay ST1080 review part XII: 1080p 100" gaming and blogging on planes trains and automobiles

It's three weeks into owning 2 ST1080s for me , and I am typing this whilst wearing my second unit , and I cannot get over the clarity of text on screen it is the clearest I have seen on a HMD . True I am due for a replacement due to faulty headphones , but really I don't think I can live without them now that I have tried them!

Having two units also lets me do one thing others cannot,I can confirm that both units come with a perfect picture. And also  for you ST1080 potentials , I do not have any picture fluctuation issues on either device, the picture is a solid 100" flat screen, the blacks are black enough and colours vibrant, I have it hooked to my Lenovo X220T and new iPad at the moment via Apple TV.

With a 1080p source the ST1080 is untouchable, I see this sentence as I type it across the screen the text remains flat, easily legible. Behind my blogger window I have Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 running in 1080p windowed and border less, why because I am also using the Lenvovo's LCD as a 2nd screen, so I have a 100" 1080p screen to blog in as well as an IPS panel to mess around in below it.

Think of the space, time and power you are saving, ever stood next to a 100 inch Plasma , or tried taking it on a flight or train journey?

The portability of the ST1080 is also untouchable, no other device can let you do this,  I could just as easily be sitting on a plane or train journey  doing this without anyone seeing me get pwned on COD or see the text I am typing.

Ripping off the light blocker or blast shield as I like to call it would mean I can do all of the above whilst keeping an eye on my surroundings.

Once again I really would like to convey the clarity of the text on screen is unsurpassed for a head mounted display. Another thing to note is bright surroundings do not diminish the display I have bright sunlight all around me and if anything the image seems brighter than normal ...

This wow , continues in game , so playing COD at 1080p from your laptop all the menu text is razor sharp , and so it is too when you use the new iPad via the new Apple TV to play the likes of Nova 3 .

Solo Mission Over Reactor :  has a lot of darkness interspersed with explosions sparks and  thermal vision battles . All of this is conveyed  gloriously by your ST1080.FPS games are at their most immersing when you use a HMD.

Modern Warfare 3  is very well optimised , so even the Intel HD3000 manages a decent game at 1080p, of course if you have dedicated gpus you can really lose yourself.

OK so onto the game proper, the first level starting off in New York, I can see sky scrapers tearing up into the sky, smoke, sfx and bullets fly by but the most amazing aspect is when you use your guns scope it is right up close to your face thanks to the ST1080.

I play MW3 at 5120 by 1600 on twin screen 30 inchers, but the immersion you get from wearing a HMD and having a single seamless 100 inch or cinema sized screen and one that unlike the HMZT1 is totally flat end to end is frankly insane and with the 180g weight and awesome lack of optical distortion ( as in other HMDs) , the experience is totally painless for my head neck and eyes ..

I loved FPS gaming with the HMZT1 but this is something completely different and to be blunt viable , it is not so with the HMZT1!

If you are going to game seriously and are about to invest in a Windows Surface slate or Ivy Bridge laptop you are going to love the experience of connecting an ST1080 to play.

Next back to some Crysis 2 3D side by side here are some screen caps if you have 3d side by side display check them out ! this is 1080p 3D not the console locked 720 nonsense , and it is achievable using an i7 Intel HD3000 combo, with dedicated gpus you will be able to play with high res textures and extreme effects too... no special Nvidia or AMD filters or settings necessary!

All FPS games simply rock on a HMD. What the ST1080 does is make this viable , through light weight and optics that do not mess with your mind.

I mentioned the new iPad  before  , it is a breeze to play the likes of Modern Combat 3 and Nova 3 on a 100" screen thanks to the ST1080  , further you can use the iPads gyro to control head movement which adds to the immersion.

Flight sims too are going to be played by ST1080 users, throw in head tracking and you are in heaven , me I am going to dig  some Wing Commander but first...

Shifting  to Wings of Prey , which is both a 1080p console and of course PC game

Before I talk about the game , I am typing this not on the 1366 768 IPS panel of the X220T but the 1080p desktop on the ST1080 , I can see the in game pictures I just took on the left whilst I type this blog entry on the right side it looks like this:

When playing flightsims the fov and size of screen are unmatched , yes you can play at far higher resolutions using multi monitor set ups , but that involves around 4.5 k , a serious amount of heat , and actual desktop real estate , the ST1080 gives you a seamless 100 " view and at 1080p you can pretty much max everything out using that expensive GPU or gaming errh homework laptop  you just bought , check out some captures

The great thing about the ST1080 is you can look around the 100 inch screen with 0 distortion , the image remains flat , no fish eye lens effects , and the sweet spot is far far greater than the Sony HMZt1s.

These tests were limited by my Intel HD3000 gpu'd Lenovo X220T, I cannot wait to test this with my gaming desktop. But to really exploit the portability of the ST1080 you need to pair it with a gaming laptop... or one of those nice looking Retina Displayed Macbookpros ( which wonder of wonders comes with a handy hdmi socket) or eventually a nice Windows Surface ..erhh surface...

HMDs with transparent displays like the ST1080 are after all supposed to free us from our desktops and not further chain us to them .... and so let it be written that  you can now game and blog whilst on your plane train or automobile (as a passenger of course) thanks to the ST1080 ... all you need is a battery pack ............

Lastly I sign off saying I am typing this whilst wearing the ST1080 , I have been using it now for around 4 hours , and the text on screen is razor sharp so much so that I prefer the 100 inch ST1080 screen in front of me to the 12 inch tablet IPS panel on the X220T.  I love the lack of fancy optics on this device the entire screen I am typing on right now is completely flat. On my HMZT1 that simply does not occur and text at 720p is nowhere near as sharp as at a 1080p res. Is it as good as a new Macbook Retina display ? Of course not , but hook this up to your new Macbook and you have an awesome 3D and 2D 100 inch portable display that travels as well as anything from Cupertino. Plus you can stand out from all the other Macistas at your local pretentious coffee dispensing outlet..

For a first attempt the ST1080 is most impressive, right now siliconmicrodisplay are improving quality control , updating firmware and  engaging with a now burgeoning community .They are replacing faulty units ( mine come soon!)  and ramping up production. All of the things that any other manufacturer does. Give them a chance and this time next year we will have 4k res HMDS,  well they got me started....
