Polynomial Space of the music ... take a trip with a game of mesmerising beauty and ask your self who needs Child of Eden?

Polynomial  Space of the music is a game  crying out to be controlled by Kinect on the PC In fact what you have for your £1.75 is a game way more beautiful than the upcoming Child of Eden .... sorry  Mizuguchi san

Polynomial is simply stunning , hypnotic , entrancing , it is as the poor old now long gone hippy generation would say one cool trip full of positive waves . In  very poor Star Trek lore it would be the Shakari of games  . Since it booted up on my pc yesterday, my room has been full of neon stars, suns supernovae,Spielbergesque spacecraft , and music , music ,there was music everywhere   , for the first time I have a game that truly shows the potential of my twin screen 5120 1600  overpowered gpu setup , in short I am lost to the world when I play it , not that I play it , I just get lost in its beauty , so if your life needs a little light at the moment , head on to Steam and get Polynomial for 75% off .

So here are some 5120 1600 screen caps of gaming as art , and by the way it flies at that res!click on the pictures to enlarge to their real size and prepare to get lost in the beauty of it all..oh the humanity ...Dave....

it's full of stars .... Dave ....

you have to see this moving every pixel is alive and coming attcha to the beat of your tunes

flying through this is like all your flying through Saturns planetary rings dreams come true!

each of those planetary towers oscillates to the beat of your music , whilst an E.T. adds to the ambience

there's too many of them , you get to shoot, fly , space combat too!  I just wander .....

And I am on a quest , a quest to get Kinect working with this game , for when that happens , dudes and dudesses , we can actually tune in turn on and drop out without any harmful side effects, that I know of ... , if only the hippies had waited , true revolution takes time you know ! Rushing them is not recommended , ask the Francais , or the old Soviets!

Seriously , I am in love with this game , buy it and it will be the most beautiful game trip you can take, you know a true zone game , one that someone needs to project on an entire building hook up to a Kinect and take the world along with them .

And of course it is simply awesome that a 2 man team produced this , and thanks to Steam it got published . Me I am just bowled over by the fact that after investing 1000s on my pcs over decades , buying all the AAA nonsense ,  it took a small  two man game for £1.75 to remind me how truly magical video gaming can be ... more on indi games that outdo their overbloated and hyped brethren soon...

check out a review , and if you have a multiscreen setup this game will floor you !

still here ? come on it is 75% off on Steam for today only get it now  remember not to long before you spend  40 times the money  on:

From Dust is 50% off on Steam today

Once you reach a certain level of purchases on Steam , i.e. you have most of the publisher packs , and games you are interested in , your interest starts to wane , your attention turns elsewhere this year for instance I will be spending more money on Good Old Games 50% sale than on Steam's .  This does not mean that the old boys of digital distribution cannot throw up a gem or two , today I have my first purchase , From Dust which coming  from legendary game designer Eric Chahi, is a must have.

The Steam folks are aware of the game  purchasing ennui that sets in after several  years of being a Steam customer  and thus of late sales have been accompanied with  user interaction events designed to get you  moving around the site and interacting with  other users. This attempt to socialize Steam use is very necessary as Valve want and need to  riff off the social network vibe. However the very nature of downloading   up to twenty gigs of a game at a time means Steam is at a great disadvantage, as  rival  onlive allows you to play near instantly and has social gaming at a level that core gamers who are not your typical Facebook  gamer,  are comfortable with. With onlive you watch live games and  can have people watch, listen, and talk, as  well as record your game play and across every internet enabled device you are  likely to own.So whilst Ironed rot say no to anyone gifting  me every game on Steam,  I would rather have every game on onlive why? Think of the installing re-installing, patching, time land cost of hardware upgrades that traditional download based PC and now  ios and Android gaming entails.

FRACT OSC mind blowing 3D Rez inspired PC gaming in Tridef 3D on the ST1080 hmd and soon on Oculus Rift too

Thegameveda has a brand new favourite game and that is FRACT OSC , which you should seriously consider voting for the developers to receive an Oculus Rift dev kit . You know that virtual reality kit that you are kickstartering errh kickstarting?

However this being thegameveda, we do not wait for cool devs like Phosfiend Systems to be awarded their dues... no we can demonstrate what FRACT OSC plays like on a 3D hmd right now , namely the smd ST1080, what's more we can play the game in 3D using Tridef 3D ... so here is a youtube video of me messing with the beginning of the game . No I am not going to solve all the puzzles for you .. that you will have to do after downloading the Beta.

So if you have a 3D hmd like the ST1080 or even a HMZT1 head crab pop it on set the 3D to side by side and enjoy , this also goes for any people still using those ancient 3D glasses and 120 hz large screen displays to view non ghost free 3D video...

And even if you don't download the beta and enjoy ..

Imagine this with a 4k res SMD hmd next year playing in 3D with head tracking , ahh it will come till then I will have to make do with 1080p 3D hmd gaming on the ST1080 ..quelle dommage as they say in Poshphiend Systems home town of Montreal ...

EXODUS II: Let My Coders Go! How will Pharaoh respond to a summer of Free Love indie gaming?

Right now there is a movement in gaming an exodus of gamers away from walled garden platforms, be they consoles, iOS or Android and yes even Valve may finally be running out of Steam.

The exodus of gamers away from consoles is not just a longing for new hardware these gamers expect new ideas and innovation , so along side this exodus there has to be an accompanying exodus of games developers chained by the games development Pharaohs ...

All the major publishers are worried, worried not by the impact of Windows 8 store apps, worried not by the death of retail or existence of piracy. They are worried about the exodus of coding talent away from their cookie cutter game production conveyor belts . With everyone coding their own fudgemallow scrumptious delights who needs Willy Wonka anymore ? Dig?

What did it take to shake the game development Pharaohs? Well plagues of Angry Birds , Green Pigs and Cut The Rope Frogs have been implicated ... but also the promise of freedom  from walled gardens offered increasingly by independent coders....

For 2012 is the summer of free lovely gaming .. free of Steam , free of iOS , free of Android , free of Flash even, free of large corporate leviathans, free of OS  and there is no finer example of the poignantly  named Free Love which you can download from the authors site here  . .

Recently I was touching on the exodus of coding talent away from from traditional multi million dollar funded and mostly stale sequels. In fact I would go as far to say that many of our coding heroes following a corporate dictated conveyor belt release of sequels to games that were cool in the 70s, 80s and 90s directly led to many a staff meltdown in once talented teams from iD,Epic, to Infinity Ward, Rare to recently Psygnosis. It was the constant mandatory conveyor belt release of sequels that killed them as creative forces ,killed their creative forces. Consider the once great talent that gave us Attic Attac ,Saberwulfe and  Goldeneye is now doing what  ... Kinect demos? As the likes of pretentious Edge editors would say they suffered for their art and Ultimately Played the Game of corporate greed to it's inevitable conclusion: redundancy.

Today of course there is other hope, for any one can code any one can reach out to the largest number of gamers in gamings history. The author of Free Love is just one such hero to be that independent coders , launched through the power of the Internet and social media, without the need to go through publisher + PR enslavement, or even the need to submit to iTunes or Google Play or the upcoming Windows 8 store or Steam for that matter...

At the Oracle of thegameveda I foresee many a coder or team leaving the corporate conveyor belt and setting up independently, that much talent does not simply exist because they work in an air con plush campus riding around on scooters and getting free veg meals and coffee . All these things are designed to tie you down to the corporate machine. That machine stifles creativity in the long run .Just check on the status of Rare, Infinity Ward, Psygnosis , Bullfrog , the great Japanese coders currently on their 15th Final Fantasies, Res Evils, and Metal Gears... All of which are going to sell less than some phone app some dude or dudess comes up with in school right now ..

The gaming publishers of old will not just have to deal with changes in content delivery through cloud ,browsers and social media but also more importantly they are going to have to set their coders free , free to code and free to release in many different ways that the old way of doing business cannot understand . In fact this would be a good point in time to cut your PR , advertising and other now pointless departments.

In a world where social media can create stars in the music and film genres , why not  games developers too ? And you gamer  can even contribute to  development by interacting with the developer via social media. Free Love is just one example of 1000s of games being developed out there , do you need to play this through Steam?Do you need to play this through iOS?Android or even as a Windows 8 App? No you can just go to the authors site and play, no walled garden and this is what has the likes of Steam Greenlighting 1000s of indie games.

As much as I love Steam and Valve this is the Man just again deciding what can and cannot be published and taking a cut. They are already creating controversy about censoring  certain games .. what is the difference then between Steam and all those now dying physical retail stores that were dictating to developers which releases they were going to stock?

Imagine ...  if they had social media and Internet in the actual summer of free love then the Beatles , Hendrix and co would have been reaching out without having to go through the Man at all ... Hair peace  more like Web peace .. peace out ... and don't forget your dose of Free Love .

Steam : Buff(y)ing a new wave of developers with "software" downloads ..

It used to be said unto each generation a games developer is born ..., right now there are millions of potentials all ready to develop games and save the world from boredom hell. The only thing stopping them is training ... Und so our Gabe "Mr Giles" Newell and Valve have decided to buff and train these millions of potentials ...  in the best possible Joss Whedon meme way ..of course..

Check out the "software" and get developing now, this is an awesome idea, can Steam do for potential games developers what Joss Whedon and Buffy did for potential slayers ... or will no one give a Firefly till the whole thing gets cancelled ?

Right, time to make that million selling App with GameMaker: Studio ....monkeys prepare to hit those keyboards ..first one to come up with an idea gets the banana...

Can Steam take on the likes of Microsoft and Adobe with their own more widely available and established software design suites ... ?

It is great to see Steam push out development tools, the finest games are made by gamers and not corporate entities. Even if one bright spark/Spike out there realises his or hers games development potential as a result, then the whole world of gaming will be richer for it and we can dig ourselves out of the Hell Mouth of sequels and remakes spewed out and regurgitated constantly by the present gen of now past by sell date developers ..and this should keep Steam relevant in a world of indie coded Apps and stores ...from beneath you it devours... indeed..

peace out...

2012 video game sales PWNED by Independent games developers

So it is video gaming season again , where every one releases their 4s, 5s, 6s and 7s .Consider anyone picking up Assassins Creed 3, or Far Cry 3, Halo 4 or Res Evil 6 is likely to have picked up previous incarnations of these ageing franchises. The quality of these games may never have been in doubt, sales will be sky high but when you have finished liberating America, tangled with tigers, waved goodbye to Cortana (she's not real ...really!) and finally got to run and gun down zombies in a Res Evil game you may start to realise that you just spent around £300 to play last years updates of the year before`s AAA titles... gamer  you have been FIFA`d !

I just finished pre ordering most of this seasons AAA games out of force of habit more than desire. Then I clicked on Hell Yeah on Steam and to put it simply I am far more interested in trying out this relatively small release than any of the big name games . And you know there are literally hundreds of such releases, across the PC,iOS, Android ,PSN,Xbox Live in fact there are thousands of gaming gems to discover.

The games to be most excited about this year come from a completely different angle altogether . For 2012 is the first gaming year in which what we refer to as Independent coded games , whether from teams of one like  Super Hexagon, or those with old skool backing like Arkedo ... are out headlining the traditionally published AAA fair that forms our staple gaming diets.

You can see the power of the indie developer across platforms. The wise are already aware of this of course, with Steam heavily promoting indie games : They know you get that stale I own those games already feeling every time a Steam sale comes along, this year the Autumn and Winter sales are going to be flooded with Independent coded games ..giving you the choice or me the choice that was always missing on Steam's catalogue.

Throw in Desura and the inde game pushers Humble Bundle, Indie Royal, Indie Gala, Be Mine, Green Man Gaming, Get Games and you have the largest and most exciting push of independent gaming and gaming content in gaming history going on.

This is THE most exciting time for emerging game coding talent in the history of gaming ,if  gamers continue to support it soon very soon Mario, Snake et al will be facing forced and well deserved retirement along with their developers.

Even the Nintendo Wii U is focusing on having a large number of it's 50 game launch sourced from Independent games developers and released as download store purchases.

Sony too will move many an indie classic through PSN as will the hoodied Microsoft guys through Xbox Live...and these developers are not afraid to move units across platforms.

And that is not even including the Windows 8 store launch that is just weeks away.

What is more the majority of these games will cost around the same as an iOS or Android App. So in these austere times they will suit gamers and still generate more income for publishers and developers than traditional AAA games .

But there is something else going on here, for the first time in a long time a game coded by 1 guy or girl can occupy the same amount of web traffic , gaming time and garner better reviews and vibes than multimillion dollar 100 plus teams coding AAA games in plush campuses..

Add to this the growing demand for classic games whether DOS classics from GOG, or HD remakes of Saturn, Genesis or Dreamcast legends.. there has never been so much choice out there and coincidentally competition for the AAA publishers .

In 2012 the year the Independent gaming smart bomb dropped , Assassins Creed 3 , Halo 4 , Black Ops 2 won't so much be facing off against each other they will be facing off against all the independents across iOS, Android, Xbox Live, Steam, Desura, Flash, Java and even the humble browser based and not so humble Facebook gaming phenomena ...

So whilst it may be cool to liberate the US of A from Imperialists whose descendants cannot even translate what Magna Carta means, or to save alien worlds from fluttering droid invasions ...you have done all that before and in 2012 you will get more gaming bang for your buck from any of the 100s of independently coded games. And you will buy these across platforms whether PC , iOS, Android, PSN or Xbox Live... And a lot of them like Hell Yeah! FTL or Super Hexagon may even bring a smile to your game face as you realise gaming just evolved and you gamer... you are evolving too... and...and...and....

and it is all thanks in no small part to our old Uncle Steve surfing the wave for us ...
