Bizzare Creations impending doom marks Independence and Emanciptation for software developers

Too many of my coding heroes have gone down this year , and it has nothing to do with recession or poor returns. There is money enough in the video games industry to fund all the softcos that have closed shop this year. A great artist is not judged on sales , and the greatest art today , the most valuable was regarded worthless at the time it was produced. Similarly talent does not decrease because of poor sales , your favorite bands greatest albums may never even chart .Take a look at the Art and Music world , and you will find sycophantic managers and publishers ,who had little interest in their artists and only in short term profits . Such is also the way of the video games industry.

Talent like Bizarre Creations , like Pandemic ,like Infinity Ward produce art and entertainment , but each of these innovators are lost the second they sign up to a great publisher .The short term cash injection is really just a long chain attached to an anchor that is thrown overboard the second you sign on the dotted line .. so Bizarre will go the way of Pandemic and Infinity Ward....the way of Origin

The publisher ALWAYS kills the developer at the first opportunity to do so , and the opportunity always comes round , you are artists , they are business , these things do not come together well , just look at all forms of media that try ..

Right now however there is a solution . It is time for software developers to declare independence , and use digital distribution like Steam , PSN , and XBox Live , to handle publishing , with the talent you possess and the earning potential of video games well known to the public and business you should chase investment money without publishers , after all they are getting that money from the same people now aren't they , why not go take it yourselves , and eliminate the vultures from the equation altogether?

What publishers forget , is to gamers , software developers are the equivalent of great Artists , heroes , authors and great musicians , so eliminating software developers and laying off talent to suit annual board meetings is incredibly short sighted . You have rising  costs for promoting and developing next years sequel so it outsells your AAA title  from this year , eventually do the maths , the balance tips and your once AAA killer app is no longer cost effective , lay off time ..... Eventually this model takes out the publisher , however large it is.

This year independent , or what goes for independent coders are thriving on Steam and iOS , smaller coders like Rebellion scored one hit and kept going , but each of the great developers tied to giant publishers has been gutted , Pandemic , Infinity Ward , and soon Bizarre Creations.Take another example . Factor 5 were coding legends from the  Amiga demo scene , and their games for the Amiga were also legendary .Hell their soundtracks for games were legendary. Unfortunately they got noticed by  Lucasarts , taken to Skywalker Ranch from Germany  and ended up coding with the Star Wars Licence ,  abandoning the games that made their name , later even worse noticed by Sony they fell for the motion gaming spell of the six axis and gave us LAIR . Notice how none of those games involved the word Turrican , the game that made them , the game they should have developed and would have had they stayed independent , the second they signed , they lost their way.

The moral of these stories is UNDER ABSOLUTELY NO TERMS SHOULD ANY SOFTWARE DEVELOPER TAKE ANY ACTION THAT THREATENS THEIR TOTAL INDEPENDENCE

You write the code , you seek the funding you publish the game ,you publish on every platform to maximize profits , if you lose it is because you messed up and not because the man in the suit needs to make savings to justify his annual bonus.

Software developers need to take a leaf out of the music industry's book and deliver their material directly to their audience .Why not follow the example of bands who release their product directly to fans and FREE , doesn't Prince get more respect and sales now that he deals directly with his fans? Do you not have a zillion ways of getting your games to your audience , none of them requiring you to be signed to a publisher about to put you on 3 months notice?Freed from what a publisher expects you to sell , you can set your own targets and goals , and you should keep going , that is  key...

By now you should have learned the video game business is far more ruthless than any other , and this is to be expected , it does more business than any other...

Bizarre Creations have a unique talent in incorporating player skill rewarding mechanics into their games , whether its the one more try to beat your score on Geometry Wars , the kudos system in Gotham Racing , the sublime sKILL play in The Club , or the neon colored power up grabbing frenzy in Blur . These are coders who produce games that are tuned to your Pavlovian core gamer conditioning. These games are not hard , as some people find them , they are games that require skill and if want to play with skill Bizarre always deliver the goods.

If you waste their talent , and they have serious talent , just take a look at F1 97 and 96 for a full Formula one sim complete with Murray Walker commentary on one Playstation disc, something that Codemasters could not manage with F1 2010 on a PS3 Blu Ray ! Where was I ?if you waste their talent on a pseudo film licence that is exactly what you will do ..waste their talent.

Publishers beware ....... and for Softcos considering fighting for their independence check out this chap , who could probably have helped a few of the Infinity Ward guys with their problems...

The Big Bangalore Windows 8 Microsoft App Fest

Microsoft are holding the largest App development marathon in history for Windows 8 in Bangalore from September 21-22.

There is already a great Indian presence in the Windows 8 store and that Microsoft can command such enthusiasm for events like these on a global scale bodes well for the success of Windows 8, the development, preview and imminent release of which have involve unique campaigns escalating evangelical enthusiasm for both hardware and software.

Steam : Buff(y)ing a new wave of developers with "software" downloads ..

It used to be said unto each generation a games developer is born ..., right now there are millions of potentials all ready to develop games and save the world from boredom hell. The only thing stopping them is training ... Und so our Gabe "Mr Giles" Newell and Valve have decided to buff and train these millions of potentials ...  in the best possible Joss Whedon meme way ..of course..

Check out the "software" and get developing now, this is an awesome idea, can Steam do for potential games developers what Joss Whedon and Buffy did for potential slayers ... or will no one give a Firefly till the whole thing gets cancelled ?

Right, time to make that million selling App with GameMaker: Studio ....monkeys prepare to hit those keyboards ..first one to come up with an idea gets the banana...

Can Steam take on the likes of Microsoft and Adobe with their own more widely available and established software design suites ... ?

It is great to see Steam push out development tools, the finest games are made by gamers and not corporate entities. Even if one bright spark/Spike out there realises his or hers games development potential as a result, then the whole world of gaming will be richer for it and we can dig ourselves out of the Hell Mouth of sequels and remakes spewed out and regurgitated constantly by the present gen of now past by sell date developers ..and this should keep Steam relevant in a world of indie coded Apps and stores ...from beneath you it devours... indeed..

peace out...

2012 video game sales PWNED by Independent games developers

So it is video gaming season again , where every one releases their 4s, 5s, 6s and 7s .Consider anyone picking up Assassins Creed 3, or Far Cry 3, Halo 4 or Res Evil 6 is likely to have picked up previous incarnations of these ageing franchises. The quality of these games may never have been in doubt, sales will be sky high but when you have finished liberating America, tangled with tigers, waved goodbye to Cortana (she's not real ...really!) and finally got to run and gun down zombies in a Res Evil game you may start to realise that you just spent around £300 to play last years updates of the year before`s AAA titles... gamer  you have been FIFA`d !

I just finished pre ordering most of this seasons AAA games out of force of habit more than desire. Then I clicked on Hell Yeah on Steam and to put it simply I am far more interested in trying out this relatively small release than any of the big name games . And you know there are literally hundreds of such releases, across the PC,iOS, Android ,PSN,Xbox Live in fact there are thousands of gaming gems to discover.

The games to be most excited about this year come from a completely different angle altogether . For 2012 is the first gaming year in which what we refer to as Independent coded games , whether from teams of one like  Super Hexagon, or those with old skool backing like Arkedo ... are out headlining the traditionally published AAA fair that forms our staple gaming diets.

You can see the power of the indie developer across platforms. The wise are already aware of this of course, with Steam heavily promoting indie games : They know you get that stale I own those games already feeling every time a Steam sale comes along, this year the Autumn and Winter sales are going to be flooded with Independent coded games ..giving you the choice or me the choice that was always missing on Steam's catalogue.

Throw in Desura and the inde game pushers Humble Bundle, Indie Royal, Indie Gala, Be Mine, Green Man Gaming, Get Games and you have the largest and most exciting push of independent gaming and gaming content in gaming history going on.

This is THE most exciting time for emerging game coding talent in the history of gaming ,if  gamers continue to support it soon very soon Mario, Snake et al will be facing forced and well deserved retirement along with their developers.

Even the Nintendo Wii U is focusing on having a large number of it's 50 game launch sourced from Independent games developers and released as download store purchases.

Sony too will move many an indie classic through PSN as will the hoodied Microsoft guys through Xbox Live...and these developers are not afraid to move units across platforms.

And that is not even including the Windows 8 store launch that is just weeks away.

What is more the majority of these games will cost around the same as an iOS or Android App. So in these austere times they will suit gamers and still generate more income for publishers and developers than traditional AAA games .

But there is something else going on here, for the first time in a long time a game coded by 1 guy or girl can occupy the same amount of web traffic , gaming time and garner better reviews and vibes than multimillion dollar 100 plus teams coding AAA games in plush campuses..

Add to this the growing demand for classic games whether DOS classics from GOG, or HD remakes of Saturn, Genesis or Dreamcast legends.. there has never been so much choice out there and coincidentally competition for the AAA publishers .

In 2012 the year the Independent gaming smart bomb dropped , Assassins Creed 3 , Halo 4 , Black Ops 2 won't so much be facing off against each other they will be facing off against all the independents across iOS, Android, Xbox Live, Steam, Desura, Flash, Java and even the humble browser based and not so humble Facebook gaming phenomena ...

So whilst it may be cool to liberate the US of A from Imperialists whose descendants cannot even translate what Magna Carta means, or to save alien worlds from fluttering droid invasions ...you have done all that before and in 2012 you will get more gaming bang for your buck from any of the 100s of independently coded games. And you will buy these across platforms whether PC , iOS, Android, PSN or Xbox Live... And a lot of them like Hell Yeah! FTL or Super Hexagon may even bring a smile to your game face as you realise gaming just evolved and you gamer... you are evolving too... and...and...and....

and it is all thanks in no small part to our old Uncle Steve surfing the wave for us ...
