Just check Google for the modding community.It really is quite a sight to actually see phaser banks light up the hull of the Enterprise in a circular pattern before discharging into your enemies shields or following a photon torpedo crashing through the hull of a ship - eat your heart out Kahn [sorry wrong series]. and also quite a challenge to balance defence and attack as you shift power from ships systems .. but don't fret Picard is around from time to time to offer training and Data later on.With all the mods available you can now stage almost any battle in glorious 3d which makes this a must have for Star Trek fans.If you are a Larry Holland fan then this game is a must have , as it represents the only recent example of Totally Games coding outside of Lucasarts.

As Star Trek games go , Bridge Commander is the best , and Larry Holland and co manage to shame all the other softcos who have had several decades to perfect the license, but somehow always manage to fall short of expectations/hype [some might say much like the films].

Star Trek Birth Of the Federation + joojoo tablet PC = LCARS heaven

Star Trek Birth of the Federation is quite the best Star Trek  and XXXX game (that's the XXXX genre people)  ever written , sought after by collectors , and updated by modders to date ,over a decade after its release  . And young'ns all that DLC is free and user generated! One game of this classic can last months. Not surprsing when you consider that the folks behind Master Of Orion , also coded this gem. 

BOTF , has the most beautiful user interface of any game , totally simplistic , 2d in fact , most of the time , but just the sight of it sets Star Trek fans midichlorians racing ( sorry George had to get a Trek vs Wars ref in somewhere ) , hmmmh ,  for the way you interact with this astonishingly (for a Trek license) deep game ,   is based on the fabled LCARS interface that you see all your favourite characters from Seven to Tasha  operating (although some more briefly than others) . 

Years ago , over a decade ago fans dreamed of their own Star Trek PADs with LCARS interfaces, well here is how I play the game on a Windows 7 Joojoo tablet pc , you know the one they said had a totally wrong aspect ratio , turns out for my Star Trek gaming and LCARS fantasies that it's perfect in the video above you will see me playing with the interface rather than playing with the game in any real sense , like the Meerkats (sadly under represented in the Trek universe) say life is beautfuls when things are simples Keptin!

Star Trek Online played on the dual screens of the Toshiba Libretto

Can a ULV cpu powered dual 7 inch touch screened ultraportable  Windows 7 tablet PC , a concept one at that handle a full blown AAA MMO like Star Trek Online....  Fascinating ...  let's see ... OK you bet your place in Stovokor it can ... 


This test (!) shows how the Libretto can do things , other tablets only dream of dreaming of , and all in a device that is smaller in size and weight  than a Tribble or indeed as I mention in the videos below, an old TOS tricorder ! 


First let us see if we can run the game on dual screens , and how it handles switching from dual to single screen gaming , with the 2nd screen used for the on screen keyboard and mouse . When switching to dual screens I am using a wireless mouse and keyboard . 

Now lets stress the Toshiba Libretto we will play Star Trek Online in the top touch screen whilst surfing the official website in the second touch screen

and lastly because everyone always asks , and because the following is only possible on the Toshiba Libretto , lets play the game and surf the site in the portrait/vertical/open book orientation:

What is really fascinating about the Libretto is the punch it`s wifi packs , it is considerably faster than all other tablets , from iPad 2 , to joojoo to the Iconia, the tiny Libretto bests them all . So playing an MMO is simply as easy as clicking on it's freshly installed icon... in this case Cryptic`s Star Trek Online which is running from the Libretto`s 60gb SSD. There is no lag , the game never drops a connection , and when you are messing around with a Libretto you never lose the wow factor .. this is a glimpse of the future of gaming and media consumption.


And you know there is nary an app or gimped phone os in sight . The future of tablets at some stage will require a merging of full OS and presently closed gimped phone OS like iOS and Android , Microsoft may beat Apple to that with Windows 8 , so Steve come on give us a full Mac OS /iOS  dual screen Mac Air tablet  !   App stores are already emerging on full OS based platforms it is only a matter of time before all these devices merge , till then we have devices like the Toshiba Libretto showing us a glimpse of what is to come , and hopefully one that has better cooling and longer battery life !
