Whilst gaming sheep graze on Brink thegameveda is playing Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries free on the Toshiba Libretto

All good Mech fans are aware  that Microsoft allowed Mektek to release and distribute Mechwarrrior 4 Mercenaries free .... That's the whole game people , Metek also have their own free to play Battletech off shoot.  But any way above  we see this PC classic , once an entire genre unto itself. being played at a blistering speed on the Toshiba Libretto  ,  now if you have friends who Mech , and have say 4 or 8 Libretto's lying around you could link up and play in the tiniest of places , on the bus home , in the lecture theatre , or whilst being bored at the theatre ..


The Toshiba Libretto has been thegameveda's gaming weapon of choice this week , and a welcome antidote to all the non starting AAA nonsense that we were supposed to be playing according the gaming bigwigs , you know the likes of Brink  , for which there is no PC demo or listing on Steam , I cannot buy the PS3 version as there still is no PSN and I may never use it again in any case , and in a couple of weeks time the Xbox 360 version will be in the summer bargain bins for 50 % or less of its current new value... you know like that other great Bethesda experiment Wet ( which I loved by the way , just the not way it dropped almost 70 % in value after release). And another thing Brink is apparently going to receive free DLC to make up for the Lag Fix that it needs as the lag on its multiplayer component renders it useless , see PSN hackers , the devcos are perfectly capable of taking their own networks down .. even without your efforts. 


Does thegameveda miss Brink , no way  , with fantastic totally legal free games like MechWarrior Mercs on the free internet on the coolest ( well actually it get's quite hot)  ultra portable  the Toshiba Libretto , am I missing PSN or the latest AAA must have ... does it look like I am ?


For mech fans I plan to test many more classic MechWarrior and Battletech inspired games , and some of them in daylight ...... I have about 30 years of this stuff to go through...  for collectors check out some rare Mech games with thegameveda


Video gaming is more than art it is now a culture ... and remember in your limited gaming time , there  is what "they" want you to play and what you could be playing ... the art is in choosing .. so if you are one of  hundred or so thousand  Brink Sheep sitting frustrated waiting for a patch to allow you to play online as expected , or one of the hundred or so millions  waiting for PSN to wake up again .. time to realise you the gamer have the power , free yourself from the herd and get on to the net discover some of the 30 years of  gaming culture out there , and the best of it is not controlled by any of the big boys... or girls.. who as recent events have shown will let you down time and time again.... usually on a weekly basis...

HAWKEN Closed Beta : Two Mechs enter one Mech makes like a tree.. exploding into a million glowing embers

I wanted to talk about the previous incarnations of Hawken sooo much but they would not let me, had hours of video captured, beautiful screen shots but the NDA prevented anything but a mention of the name .. All that changed as the Closed Beta is here and it runs faster than I expected the game you see in the video below is running at high/ultra settings on just an Intel HD3000 powered Windows 8 Tablet PC .. I was going to fix my rig for this but I do not need to ... Also consider I am running FRAPS and the website/forums for Hawken whilst playing ... Server issues aside you are going to be impressed when you get in game , prepare  to die a lot but when it looks as beautiful as this ..

I am sure you won`t mind, at this stage you are helping out the coders for this free to play Mech action game that is doing what FROM should have done with Armored Core , Square should have done with Front Mission , Sega with Virtual On and of course FASA with Mech Warrior (ok the Beta starts on Monday) but this weekend is about the glorious PC ace that is Hawken. HAWKEN Closed Beta : Playing in ghost free 3D using the Cinemizer OLED hmd and Tridef 3D

In my previous post I was playing Hawken in 2D in ultra settings at 1280 by 720 using just an Intel HD3000 powered tablet pc. What I needed to see was how it copes with being played in 3D , thanks to Tridef 3D and the Cinemizer OLED hmd I managed to do just that.. 

To set up the game for 3D play use the generic settings for Tridef 3D , connect your hmd of choice or 3D display of choice and then launch the game from Tridef . Ignore the warning about Direct X ..and keep calm and carry on .. As this is a beta we will forgive the menu screens which render garbage , for when you get into playing the game with your hmd or 3D display that`s when things start coming together.

Mech games are crying out to be played in 3D, to get this one playable chose the low settings , turn of particle fx, physx and I took down Anisotropic filtering too. The game still looks great on the Cinemizer OLED thanks to the colour production and high refresh rate. You will have to use the force a little with some of the menus which Tridef wrecks atm...

Mechwarrior Online Open Beta 2D and 3D game play for old pilots and bold pilots ...

A weekend of Hawken washed down with some fine vintage Mechwarrior Online .. not bad .. here is how the game looks and runs on Intel HD3000 powered hardware. Note the game is still a Beta so there is going to improvement, this is old skool PC fare . As you learn to pilot these Mechs, it becomes clear  that victory is about understanding rock paper missile barrage combat and all of it hinging on how you manage your prone to overheating Mechwarrior. 

Coming from the visual beauty of Hawken which runs at a fare pace on the same hardware , you may dismiss Mechwarrior Online as being too old school , but start playing , in fact spend many hours learning how to play and you have a completely different take on Mech gaming. 

That Mechwarrior Online is neither revolutionary or even evolutionary is to be expected and should not put you off playing this and Hawken, the developers  Piranha have been careful to give the fans what they wanted, old school Mechwarrior game play. I have never seen the Cryengine looking so clean, the sanitised  look of this game is all about reminding you of the good old days of Mech gaming . Light and dark contrasts work well in this game , check out the silhouetted Mechs in the pictures above and below, its not the eye melting candy of Hawken but Mechwarrior Online creates its atmosphere through more subtle means. The game already has enough hooks to the old classics that make you want to persevere and actually learn to pilot those Mechs, learn about balancing weapons and heat etc . 

I play using an Intel HD3000 powered i7 Lenovo X220T ( some day I will be bothered to refill the Boreas on my gaming rig ) in 2D and 3D. To get playable fps you should play with low settings and vsync off . 

I played in 3D using the Cinemizer OLED . Now imagine this game when the head tracking option becomes available . 3D was achieved using Tridef 3D generic settings , I wish developers would wake up to the fact that there are considerably more igpus out there now which can capably handle modern PC gaming not just in 2D but 3D . I have been 3D gaming for 2 years now , never with an ATI or nVidia gpu. Gamers need to be clear too , you do not need nVidia or Ati hardware or GPUS to game in 3D . The Intel HD3000 or 4000 in your PC or Jobs Difference Engine will do just fine more than fine in fact just check my Hawken videos. Neither do you need to lug around a 3D  Plasma or 120 hz monitor not when there are hmds like the Cinemizer OLED and the smd ST1080 .

What I most need from the developers of Mechwarrior Online  is for the game to come with a ready made profile for my trusty old Force Feedback Pro 2 .. atm twisting and throttle controls are not functional which is why you will see me reversing in mountains quite a lot in the videos ...

Hawken Closed Beta Mechs my day: 2D and 3D Deathmatch, Team Deatmatch , Missile silos and more

PC gaming is about to have one of those Unreal 4 Tournament, Battlefield 2 moments, that`s what Hawken is. Those two games had people building rigs, battling at 200 FPS on multiple GPU and monitor set ups. They remain insanely awesome milestones for PC gaming when it comes to the arena based combat game. And that is what Hawken is too,not a mech sim, not a mech sim at all. But it is still the most beautiful Mech based game to date. Oh the beauty of it ,that is what you start to anticipate when you finally see that connecting screen and you make it into a game,of any mode at present.

Hawken is a beautiful game not because of polygon counts or high res textures, no it is a visual feast thanks to the way it paints with colour and changes the colour palate on the fly , dynamically. The whole thing is the total opposite of Mechwarrior with its clean textures and bright neon weapons and explosions.  Take a snapshot and the pictures you get look straight from some 90s graphic novel 

Hawken is the Derelicte of Mech games and every moment is packed with detail and rich vivid colour , distressed and torn to shreds in seconds. Every where you look polygons which form clean and neat buildings and environments in other games are battered and bruised bathed in entirely different colour palates as weapons fx and explosions light them up.  If you have the hardware throw in motion blur and this is the finest ugliest game in the world of gaming to date . Throw in the haze filter , weather effects hazes , debris and you have a game that makes the distressed grungy world of Steel Battalion look like Mech Warrior 2 ... And it runs at speed on even an Intel HD3000 .. 

Day 3 gave me time to check out death match , missile assault , gaming at 1280 by 720 , 1024 by 768 at ultra and high texture and world detail and gaming in 3D using Tridef 3D and a Cinemizer OLED hmd on which the colours look insane...
