E3 2011 UBISOFT KEYNOTE LIVE BLOGGING ON THE DUAL SCREEN ACER ICONIA

E3 2011 is a great excuse for thegameveda to dust off the old Acer Iconia Dual Screen Tablet pc ,And see how it handles multiscreen E3 event viewing. So lets check out the official site , Microsofts Windows 8 tile style launch page ,a little EA stuff including Battlefield 3 in the top touch screen WHILST watching the live stream of one of the Keynotes in the lower screen , in this case the Ubisoft one...  On your Windows 7 i5 dual screen tablet this goes a little something like this :

A little later and I am blogging in the lower screen whilst waiting for the Ubisoft guys and girls to get to Assassins Creed Revelations in the live stream of their keynote in the top touch screen , Ghost Recon Future Soldier and  Farcry 3  keep me interested whilst I wait. Ghost Recon Online looks the better game , and it does not hurt that the PC online game is FREE!  The rendered video impresses as usual . The in game Constantinople playthrough is even more impressive with a refined graphics and combat engine and the return of THAT swagger .  And FIRE .... lots of FIRE  as an age refined Ezio takes out most of Constantinople harbour !  all rendered rather nicely on the PS3. Come Christmas Assassins Creed Revelations will be the most collectable game across any format ...whilst that darn Rabbids game will be kinecting with it`s own audience. So happy 25th Ubisoft !

E3 2011 Nintendo keynote :old friends chanting ...Wii U.. Wii U..Wii U.. Wii U...Wii U

First off the Nintendo E3 2011 keynote did not put mii to sleep like the Sony one . Starting solidly with Miyamoto san , and a translator that managed to complete translations before old Shigeru had a chance to actually complete a sentence in Japanese . Either this was telepathy or the teleprompt timing had been Bowsered ... 


It was great to see a master games designer speak , Iwata san also shone although  Mr Fils Aime looked a bit off this year ,  however all 3 outdid any other grovelling CEO at this years E3 2011 keynotes. 


What was not so great was the substance , Nintendo are masters at selling old rope , and this was the aim of the entire presentation . 


Of course somewhere in the litany of rehashes of rehashes of rehashes of Nintendo staples , was the announcement of the Wii U ... which was no surprise at all because everyone in the known universe knew it was coming... 


Do you remember that amazing E3 when the Wii mote came out and Miyamoto and co played Wii Tennis with a totally unplanted audience member? Well there was none of that kind of awesome at this presentation. 


Wii do love Miyamoto san , wii have respect for what Nintendo is trying to do with the Wii U  and it will make a welcome purchase as our old 360s and PS3s gather dust....


But let us be deathly serious for one moment ,  iOS and Android are killing the traditional console manufacturers , gaming has already moved from the TV ... to the tablet and the phone , and the gaming laptop with a resurgent PC gaming market . All these platforms are what Nintendo are hoping to claw back some market share from.... By the time it launches Wii U , Windows 8 tablets , and iPad 3 , as well as the next gen of Android tablets will dent Nintendos market share even more . 


And of course it will rely or try to rely on Zelda Mario etc to counter this , but these are ageing giants , a little Angry Bird for instance is now as recognisable by gamers and non gamers as Mario Zelda or Link . And Apple and Google are bigger brands than Sony or Nintendo...


Even the might of these gaming legends cannot take on a tiny phone App , and that is because Nintendo like Sony have no answer to Apples  iTunes store , no answer to the Android App store and absolutely no answer to Steam or the likes of Onlive and browser/social network gaming .


Saying that they do will not alter this harsh reality. They cannot compete with the new boys and girls ..


The era of console led gaming is over , and Nintendo present well , but look closer and you will see it is just old rope , in HD , pseudo 3D , or streamed to a controller that wishes ....wishes it were an iPad ....Xoom or any of the million or so devices that now take up our gaming time . 


I remember Zelda , Mario , Mario 3D , etc but been there done that , do not want to do it again , and again , and again . 


Nintendo need to wake up with NEW IP , and RETIRE some old IP , why is the most respected games designer of our time locked into an endless cycle of rehashing a few staple games ? 


Free Miyamoto san now ! Wait and see when Apple buys Nintendo you the games fan will rejoice ....keynote presentations by Steve Jobs and Miyamato san .... now that would sell some old rope......

E3 2011 SONY keynote sends thegameveda to sle.e..ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Sony`s USA CEO offers apologies  and yet more apologies , for the PSN outage , stressing the connectivity of the PS3 , a kind of reverse  psych challenge to all those doubting Sony`s online credibility post hack(s).Later Sony`s Nihon CEO offers apologies and yet more apologies for the USA CEO`s tie....


And straight into Uncharted 3 , and I do not know , 7 hours into E3 2011 and every third person game , every FPS every motion based gimmick game looks the same as last years . But wait this one has added  motion sickness . 


But really since the dominance of these now old gen consoles , ALL graphical innovation is dead , these games look the same , the same rusted ship interior Drake is running through , could be in any other 3rd person game of this generation, 


E3 traditionally used to be the time where new technology pushed and inspired software developers , this is just the same old stuff , ok water that does not look or act like water , washed out rusted and neon levels the same stock character animations 


And you know what this is going to be haled as the finest PS3 game to date , oh they added ..more.....quick time events ....  but wait the story might save it , at least it would have if I hadn`t just seen most of the games cut scenes ....


Resistance 3 looks like all the other resistance games , has to be played out of respect for Insomniac , but is yet more evidence that this ageing console generation could really do with a tech update , how many shades of brown can the PS3 handle after all?


3 minutes of Resistance 3  leaves you with that totally  same as last years model feeling. Only more brown!


Oooh Kratos is going 3D and as we already know Ico and Shadow of Colossus , maybe sales of Sony 3D tvs ... and like magic they just announced a 3d display for the PS3 , didn`t see that one coming , it does have a 2 screen effect for 2 players with the glassess  


Now this could be smart marketing with Resistance 3 cable monitor and glasses for $499.


And on to Move , which like Kinect has sold by the millions , but is used by the hundreds .So they made a point and click NBA game , lame  , why not just give us a Star wars light sabre game? 


and on to Infamous 2 which looks like the first jaw dropping game in the Sony presentation and you can get it now!


The second jaw dropper is Starhawk , ok maybe not , I am just about to fall asleep when DUST 514 the EVE online adjunct starts up , and this does look interesting . The first time a PC MMO is linked to a console shooter game . The Achilles heel of course is that it runs on PSN ! Wait till hackers take down your EVE account with your PSN account ... .


Then we have the most impressive game this year , Bioshock Infinite , from game coding gods Irrational games . And the best bit of the conference so far,  Ken Levine explaining his new found love for PlayStation Move , and a Bioshock game on the NGP ! Bioshock will also be included on the Bioshock Infinite Bluray .


And wonder of wonders Star Trek games , 2 of them playable with Move , and looking very Mass Effect like ! 


The next significant exclusive .. including Battlefield 1943 on the PS3 Battlefield disc .. not bad ,,, maybe we could see the PC version some time ....


On to NGP , now named PSVITA which is doomed to suffer the same fate as the Nintendo 3DS ( extinction)  . The PSVITA is introduced to absolutely no cheers , cf iPad 2 , or the upcoming iPhone 5 .... 


Sony with PSVITA cannot possibly hope to take on the iOS and Android tablets that now take the place of 3DS and PSP gaming handhelds .  Same old stale ideas of what social networking should be , controlled game releases , and game prices that are up to 60 times more expensive than your average app . This wont stop me buying it to play Metal Gear , but that won`t hit till at least 2014 . By which time we will be on iPad 7 !


Ti's a shame that Sony did not take the hardware in the NGP and put it into a tablet . Currently their own forthcoming Android based tablets will compete with the PlayStation Vita . 


At this point I am totally yawning ...... ok........ I cannot take any more of this and my touch screen keyboard makes too good a head rest .. In conclusion  the Sony 2011 line up should be good for helping us get some shuteye ... And boy was that  tie legal ?  ...goodnight..thegameveda is off to dream of core game Nirvana

The most impressive game at E3 2011 ... was most impressive

And that would have to be Bioware`s Star Wars The Old Republic ... if it can manage to weave us into the plot you see in the trailer ( as opposed to prancing around with pets and   watching Star Wars dignitaries land and take off from afar )


here is the latest trailer , remember you can trust Bioware ... they`re doctors!

In fact E3 2011 , showed the PC simply destroys the ageing consoles , in every way , there is nothing that touches its speed , ease of game delivery ( Steam , Onlive ,Gaikai, Mac App Store ,and EA`s Origin) . Hardware is improving at a speed console companies can only dream of , and then scrape up the lower end of to use in the "next gen" of consoles . Simply put a game like  Skyrim is going to rock on a 3 screen 30 inch 7680 by 1200 set up , and the likes of TOR will shine on our i7 tablets , the rest of y`all can play with the bathroom appliance inspired Wii U and the should have been a tablet NGP ..sorry PSVita... and remember they expect you to play the same games you were playing 25 years ago ... 


If anything the freed Bungie , Cliffy B and the Unreal crew , Carmack et al at iD , may finally wake up to the coolest thing about the games industry ,no,  not prancing around at keynotes for console manufacturers... but  the real evolution en masse from console gamers to PC gamers   . Uber developers should heed the signs from E3 2011 , the console market is in its traditional downward spiral phase , it cannot evolve , whilst the PC and Mac continue to evolve , and  no gaming platform that evolves faster than the  PC .... or throws up more surprises !!! It did after all throw you guys up after all did it not .....?

E3 2011 Microsoft Keynote ..can M$ PWN E3 ?..as Sony sings the post PSN Hack blues and Nintendo hides behind pensionable mascots?

Microsoft`s E3 2011 mission is all about Kinect with traditional AAA games and their diva producers taking a back seat this year

And it starts with the multi platform Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 3 , so no , there is no sign at this point that M$ is going to rule this E3 . Modern Warfare 3 is going to run so much nicer on my laptops , tablets and gaming rig all from one cheaper than console purchase from Steam.Towards the end of the Modern Warfare demo we are on a  boat doing a Michael Bay in what   looks a lot llke that Medal of Honor Pacific (PC) level that is also a total Michael Bay rip... errh homage .... here watch some video and compare it with the level for Modern Warfare 3 ....

well Infinity Ward members used to work on Medal Of Honor games if I remember correctly.


Next up it is Don with another respected developer this time Crystal Dynamics , with another multi platform release the Tomb Raider rehash . So again not going to call it for Microsoft  .. another brown third person adventure . The problem with Crystal Dynamics takes on Tomb Raider is that they are too short , go back to the Core coded ones and they are vast sprawling adventures , the tighter puzzle oriented Crystal Dynamics games lose all the elegance of the acrobatic Ms Croft and also her awesomely effete snobbish upper class aristo Pippa like charm(s)... And I see more Michael Bay influences , seriously people I like his films too but does every game have to involve falling debris barely missing our heroes/heroines .. Tomb Raider Rehash is not all that and I this gives me an excuse to go back to trying to finish Tomb Raider 3 on the psone.....


Then we have one of those famously English CEO types with fake American accents .. with yet more multiplatform releases , but with added kinect functions... that`s the games not the CEO ...


Who`s this stepping up to the stage....? ...one of the Docs from Bioware ( they were all medics once) and another Multiplatform game Mass Effect 3 , set of course in the future , the problem is it is also going to be released in the far off future on the dark side of 2012 , hopefully before the World is due to end again. You can chose dialogue with Kinect , command your squad with speech , which is great but seriously who in your house is gonna let you do that in real life ?


This would be totally awesome in a tactical squad based FPS like Ghost Recon ... and lo and behold that is what we have up next , it`s also multiplatform so still no cigar for Micosrosoft . 


Ubisofts awesome CEO is up next and Ghost Recon Future Soldier  , and the oobies like to innovate , with kinect controlled weapon customisation with Gunsmith - something which draws the most cheers in the conference and the loudest applause , and even more when the demo dude uses it with hand gestures - this is AWESOME....and the cheers go on . 


Finally we have something that Kinect makes  stand out  from the other platforms .......


Kinect also will have limited Bing search facilities , basically you get to look at stuff M$ and Xbox want to let you , but still no full Internet Browser. Live TV , is not a game , and really at 2 am in the morning you do not want to be shouting Xbox Adult Channel in your room so your parents and or dorm friends can hear ... .or do you .........?


Skipping some banal fighting game , we get to Cliffy B announcing the first real exclusive for the 360 , Gears of War 3 , and Ice T! to play it ok again that E3 2011 meme : infinite shades of brown in third person games in their 3rd iteration , Uncharted 3 is brown , Resistance 3 is the Godfather of Brown , and Gears 3 is also down with the brown .... of course it could just be that this generation of consoles limited colour and texture palettes are starting to reveal ...yes their true brown colours....


Joking aside this must be the next iteration of the Unreal 3 engine , and hopefully the last... 


Well that was as about impressive as Gears of War 2 .....  


Next Crytek have their Kratos wannabee Ryse , only this is Kinect controlled , and it is impressive if it is indeed real ....


Halo remastered should be a nice little diversion,  hopefully they will  release it on the PC too at some point , it would do wonders for the Games For Windows Live store , Xbox fans get it Nov 15 th ... 


then boring car stuff , ok nap over it is time to rip into that perennially easy target Peter I Promised you a Miracle Molyneux .. More Fable ...please how about some more Syndicate ? or Powermonger ? or Populous touch for iOS or Android? Still Pete must do as he is told and making the first Kinect child simulator ( now cancelled indefinitely) did nothing for his kudos ... 


Fable the Journey is an on rails Kinect game , kind of like the Harry Potter Kinect levels exclusive to the 360 version , thing is you are so going to get tired .. of opening yet another Fable games box ...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz sorry dosed off again ... 


But hey we got Minecraft Kinect this winter .. now that is a kool Microsoft Exclusive ... but still not entirely earth shattering ...


ok time for another nap there is some Disney stuff ....zzzzzzzzz.....wooah nap over ... 90 minutes and we still have no show stealer ......and it is highly unlikely to be Kinect Star Wars although thegameveda will be playing this to death ..even though like most of us  thegameveda does not need a games console to play Star Wars ...this should be something to kinect with , although I feel they missed the boat on an Ewok slapping mini game.. or whack a Gungan depending on how you prefer your Episodes....


There is clear latency at this stage in the light sabre moves , but force push looks impressive , OK there is SERIOUS latency in the light sabre swings but this looks almost as much fun as ...well play acting Jedi fights when we were 7 ....almost... well not any where near as fun actually ... 


oh my gaming Gods its Tim Shafer with Sesame Street , Tim delivers the first intentional  jokes of E3 2011 ( Sony's CEOS tie was a good joke) , Once Upon a Monster is something I am totally going to have too much fun with ...but don`t tell anyone.. 


Kinect Fun Labs looks pretty cool . almost as cool as  Kudo in his shades and hopefully as soothing as Abigails voice and instant Kinect me presentation...and we have some major cheers...


finger tracking in 3d is very nice and object capture .. are demoed .. that last one is going to be very dodgy ! 


Kinect Sports 2 is as expected , so there is really no jaw dropping game  ... even the final announcement of Halo 4 which  hits winter 2012.


In conclusion over the next year Xbox 360 may be the best selling console , but this will be in an overall shrinking console market , as millions turn to tablets and phones for their games . Or just join the PC and Apple evolution ...


It will be Apple and not Microsoft that see the greatest growth , so Dons final boast is really a hollow one , 360 may be the top dog of the old dogs but so what?  What we needed was the announcement of new technology the next 360 , and this will have to come soon if Microsoft and the other console manufactures want to keep hold of their market ...


All in all too much brown , too many sequels , Kinect still lags , NO Japanese exclusives for 360 this year , now that is interesting considering Microsoft's prior obsession with breaking Japan.


And there is NO new significant IP ... still I got some sleep .  I dozed off several times in this one , though not completely as I did for the Sony one. 


So far Nintendo take the presentation crown simply for having Miyamoto san and the eternally jovial Iwata san , Sony need to try harder.... and from the lack of new content I  could swear Microsoft is hiding something ...
