Metroid other M another Masterpiece

As we know Metroid other M is the first Metroid on Wii  developed by a studio other than Retro , no less than Tecmo and Team Ninja [ post Itakagi] .

The coolest thing about this game is whilst  everyone is being wowed by how  Kinect and Move are going to rev the way we play  , Nintendo and Tecmo  have revolutionised the way that motion controllers are used . The audacity factor is off the scale and it pays dividends , placing Nintendo ahead of Microsoft and Sony in the motion control gaming arena , and consider they took this chance with one of their most prestigious franchises!

The revolutionary bits

1.The minimalistic old school control scheme , throw away your nunchuck , remove that plastic motion enhancement dead weight .  You need only the Wiimote !

2. Sit down , yes you can sit down and play this game ! The 2nd revolutionary aspect is Metroid Other M is one of the only Wii games , you can actually play sitting down

3.Literally days from the release of Move and with Kinect out in Beta , Nintendo have trumped both Microsoft and Sony , and just with a Wiimote .This is a near perfect control scheme , retro enough for real fans , and simple enough for newbies , and it allows talented gamers get to show off their Metroid Ninja skills.

The beauty of the control scheme really hits you twice , first with the novelty of  using the wiimote as a Snes pad  to control Samus in a traditional 2d platform view , and second when you point th e wii mote at the screen and your view changes to first person .

The Snes pad style control scheme really comes into its own when the screen is littered with enemies , the Prime games were awesome FPS games , but they missed the chaos of jumping around and platforming of the 2d Metroids  while dodging enemies. Other M has , thanks to its control scheme and side on  3d view returned this original game mechanic , and retained enough of the FPS mechanics of the Prime series to satisfy fans of the old and newer Samus adventures.

3. This is the  best looking Wii game , the levels and rooms have a great sense of scale , and size helped by the fact that when you go 2d the level zooms out , and it takes you right back to the good old days , although you wont have time to look at the scenery until you clear the room of bad guys , at which point you can switch to the 3d view and wonder at the design , and ask yourself why don`t 360 and PS3 games look this good?

The not so revolutionary but vitally essential for  maintaining reps of the Metroid franchise and Team Ninja  bits:

1.Beautiful cut scenes  ,better than PS3 /360 CGI ,with painfully slow/poetic delivery ,pauses and introspective pondering, and quite possibly several hours of mistranslation from the original  Japanese . The backstory  is there because everyone  wants to get to know Samus , especially after  having reached the point in Metroid gaming where you realise she is not a fella. This happens at different stages for fans , but it does happen to all of us !

2. Metroid Gaiden , this being Tecmo there has to be some melee ninja style combat , and it is fast and furious , the Hayabusa clan would be proud of Samus` moves and speed ,not to mention the single button wall jump/climb, wall slides , head jumping , you have to have head jumping in a Team Ninja game ........

The missing pieces of other Metroids that Metroid other M misses

There is no meaningless scanning , I luuuurve scanning non plot driving alien artifacts, flora and fauna , but in other M if your cursor starts to turn red and scan it means something bad is about to happen , the developers have made sure the only thing you scan is something which drives the plot forward or  is about to mutate into an invisible fire spitting purple people eating giant  tongued purple thing , sadly I cannot be more accurate than that because the game does not allow detailed scanning !

There is also no movement in first person mode , not so bad really as this mode is used by beginners to shoot things from a distance , or by skilled players who can master the 2d 3d switch , and it helps if you do , there are many techniques to learn , such as taking out the small fry in seconds in 2d autolock mode then switching to FPS mode scanning the hive they are coming from , firing 3 missiles to take out the hive using the same button , and then switching to 2d to take out the 2nd wave which has almost reached you in the 3 seconds it took you to take out their hive.  Then start adding melee combat and having to time missile locks , and you will develop a personalised depth of control and gameplay that you expect from a Team Ninja game.

Yes you could just defeat the game with a button press, but Team Ninja always allows you to do so with style and in your own fashion if you are skilled enough.

Now if only someone would let Team Ninja loose with this graphics engine and control scheme to design the ultimate .....wait for it ..... Castlevania !

Metroid Other M is another AAA title for the Wii, and will be appreciated as much as any of the other AAA titles from Nintendo`s rivals .  Not least those by those of us who  will not be putting ourselves through Hammer Time dance routines every time we want to navigate an onscreen menu  , or speaking Bocce to our Kinects  as their bad motivator units  only allow English , Japanese and for some reason Mexican Spanish .....for now

Could a casual Kinect led gaming tsunami wipe out core gaming and ultimately doom the industry?

Fleeing the Casual tyranny Admiral Apple led a rag tag fleet of...or is that Leading the Casual Tryanny? Bungie come back..

It began with the Wii, nay it actually began with the Sony PlayStation , the birth of casual gaming , when [jilted] mass brand managers Sony , sought to apply their business models to the video game industry . In a twirl of a CD drive , Sony swept away the uber kudos of  the era of core gamers with their  Snes/Genesis , Arcade Games [ that required an Arcade!] and the self monickered l33t PC /Mac/ computer geek gaming generation .

It has continued with the Xbox  ,360 , Wii ,PS2 and  PS3. The casuals now walk amongst us indistinguishable from the normal gamer...They are the normal gamer........They...are us ....

It has continued with iOS and Android mobile touch , and Social Network facebook gaming swiping aside the core PSP and even shaking the knees of the Nintendo  DS execs....

The Casual gaming tsunami is now coming to its conclusion with Move and more significantly Kinect.

By your command :

Long after the last core game has finished spinning in your machine , or been played through in 5 hours on its hardest setting THIS year you will be hopping around your TV in your finest Lycra  , or you will be turning down the lights to see which wonderful colour your PlayStation move light sabre decides to change into next... you may even ...even get out the old Wii weighing thing .. or just opt for swiping away at your iOS and or Android device of choice

You too have been swept under the Casual  gaming Tsunami .... this is the Future .... Tom Cruise foresaw it in Minority  report , though its less grey and morbid!

There is no escape you see because our coding heroes , the ones responsible for the core games that have fuelled the gaming industry and core gamers for almost 30 years, well they are all going to be jumping around their living rooms too , but not because they have been swept under the Casual  Kinect/Move/iOS/ Android gaming Tsunami , no , because their code houses are about to go under , when casual dancing in lycra  game X outsells EVERY core game release put together , you know where the money will be going next year , and it wont be to fund a 200 strong group of elite coders to churn out the bloated sequel to last years underselling bloated sequel to last years underselling bloated sequel ....

This casual gaming tsunami  ends an era where core gaming drove the market  ,  the last time gaming got this mainstream was at the height of Atari's reign , right before the industry collapsed and they say to this day you can still find console games buried in USA deserts ...so core games fans don't be frightened all of this has happened before and all this will happen again ..... just have to go with the lycra for a while ....

Goldeneye Rare or Eurocom? The greatest game ever shaken or stirred by it's Wii remake?

You have to feel for Eurocom ,  what you say ? For it is Rare that are forever associated with one of the greatest games ever written ,Goldeneye on the N64 , my favorite game of all time . You may not know but Eurocom have been coding James Bond games since 1991  ,if you count the NES James Bond Jr  they also gave us the console versions of James Bond 007 Nightfire and  of course the N64 The  World Is Not Enough .  Rare's Goldeneye is one mean Albatross that`s followed Eurocom through coding all these Bond games . Their T.W.I.N.E tried so hard it's practically a flattering homage to Rare.

Goldeneye 64 is not just revered as the finest console fps , multi player fps , film tie in , no it is also considered THE best FPS , multi player FPS period and THE BEST GAME ,across any format , developed over 5 years , perfected like no other game before or after it , and playable with SKILL , and style .  All its contemporary PC FPS colleagues , were just point and shoot , reload , grab health , point and shoot , watch the cut scene , and then buy the sequel .....  Just go play through the initial level and the game will engage you more as a gamer than any of  today's contemporary 4 hour FPS games ..You don't even have health packs in Goldeneye 64 !

Goldeneye on the  Wii ,the second attempt at exploiting the fame of  Goldeneye 64 ,if  Rogue Agent qualifies as an attempt,  seems to be based on the thoroughly modern game mechanic of  destructable cover and sights to nose Call of Duty school of twitch shootemup .

So have Eurocom finally driven that Rare Goldeneye Albatross away ? Moneypenny please .... of course not but as they say in dear ole Blighty , they gave it a jolly good try.... according to initial reviews.

Nothing can touch the design of Rare's  Goldeneye n64 , if you want to check out it's spiritual  sequel , seek out Perfect Dark on the N64 or Xbox Live ,  or if you really know your games Innerloop's   Project igi and it's sequel on the PC..

In video game history before Goldeneye 64 , and even after FPS games are just corridors with moving targets . The corridor may be a jungle in Nam , a hedgerow in WW2 France , a Helghan/Covenant space ship  , or an Afghani mountain range, but all you do is walk from the start to the exit of the corridor , unloading weapons of choice , stopping behind cover to reload/recharge . And this formula has not really changed since Doom . Although Doom at least had secrets!.  Skill is not required , and this is why even on the hardest settings you can walk the corridor of most modern day FPS games in 4 hours , tops .... oh you can spend more time  hiding  behind walls to make it last a bit longer ...it's why they tag on the experience based multiplayer!
With Goldeneye 64 , Rare gave us diverse objectives,  in real world locations , based on the  sets of the film . Weapons were more realistic and useful than any other game  , giving feedback through the rumble pack , choice and combination , with multiple , up to 3 different uses for each kind  crucial and key to completing mission objectives . Throw in time challenges , sniping missions , snapping missions , difficulty settings that gave you more complex objectives to complete , and not just more enemies to shoot and you had the perfect single player game.

With half a decade of time devoted to this game's development ,  something unique  happened , each of the levels was polished to perfection , so the sniping level is not just a sniping level , its THE best sniping mission in a game period , the jungle mission is not just ... you get the picture ...
Then you come to playing the game with skill , and I don't just mean the section where you take the guy out on the toilet . Let me show you what I mean , say you just completed that cool act [well he was a bad guy] , now you wait for another guard to enter the toilet , you take him out and open the door , to the right of you are crates , so what you say , to the bottom of the stairs past the crates is a locked door containing guards , now in any other fps you simply rush down with guns blazing . But this is Goldeneye the greatest FPS or game ever , take your silenced pistol and put one bullet in each crate  , you will see the bullet holes in each , now take precise aim at the locked door , use the AK47 you took from the guard in the toilet and shoot the door and at the corridor, you want to make noise to get the bad guys attention , alarms sound and around 7 guards are heading your way , you are about to take out 7 guards with one  bullet , now wait  , wait they get to the stairs , and reach the crates, take your 1 bullet shoot the crates , which you loaded with 1 bullet each before hand , they go boom , and take all 7 guards with them , and you , well you are so James Bond now aren't you ...... at least you will be when you manage pull this off ...

Which is just one example of  how you can mess with  with the AI in this game , its never been bettered, better graphics can never improve on its perfect game design.

Will I able to do this sort of thing in Goldeneye Wii ? Well I'll find out soon ...

Did I mention that the multiplayer that would lock non gamer friends to your spare N64 joypads?  They would actually pass on Mariokart 64 to play this game!

Or the 2 secret levels you unlocked for beating the game on the hardest settings?

Now for the name dropping part , I once met J Romero after sneaking a pass to a games show , he was plugging some game called ... Daikatana ....showing me the game . he asked me what my favourite game was .... of course it was Goldeneye ... he asked why ... I gave what seemed like a 30 minute lecture .... he looked  shaken and stirred and asked me who I was .... hmmh I said ..me ?I play games .... and then I went off to take photos with the booth babes .... who all had shorter hair than Mr Romero if I recall correctly....

The point dear friends is Rare outdid every game going on a humble N64 , through refined games design , their design dictated to the hardware , unlike many other coders , who to this day let hardware dictate games design. You can see some of this happening in Perfect Dark Zero , which is nowhere near the genius of Goldeneye 64 and the original Perfect Dark...and you will feel the pain of it when you finish your latest modern day fps and shortchanged turn to the tagged on experience based multi player ....
I do not look back at Goldeneye with nostalgia , when I look back at it I see the genius of design , that design is timeless and gave a lot of joy to a generation of games fans who revere it as the greatest video game ever written.

So if at the very least Eurocom's Goldeneye for the Wii gets people talking about the original , that's way cool in my books.... it may mean the coders of tomorrows FPS games make  a change from the 4 hour corridor traversing fps +/- experience based mulitplayer+/- zombies tv dinner games that we are served up annually.

Moneypenny... please...not now....she's incorrigible you know

Nintendo saves Christmas and core gaming ... how very Alanis.....

Nintendo's Four Mousketeers dueling for the coeurs de core

Well the irony does not escape me,that Nintendo, the company that supercharged casual gaming with the Wii , is in actual fact the goto place for your hard core gaming session this Christmas .

By now your new core [i.e made for casuals] Halo Reach , Medal of Honor , and Call of Duty Ripp Off  4 hour campaigns have been finished , played backwards , one arm tied behind your back , blind folded and with friends shouting Didi Mau in their best Cartman... You may even be suffering from Kinect fatigue , its been a couple of weeks of jumping around now getting sweaty , come on confess it makes a very cool Minority Report remote , but you want to move that sofa back now don't you? To you core games fan the PlayStation Move , just is a very cool colour changing hypnosis thingy , a thingy  with out a killer app ,the most fun can be had if you  turn off the lights and wave it around imagining the only game that should have been released for it but never will be , you know with Jedi...

The only place where traditional gaming , with actual game mechanics and skill  , is shocking to say the Ninentdo Wii.  I bet Fils-Aime is jumping on mushrooms  in 3d joy whilst listening to Alanis Morissette ...

For this Christmas , Kirby , Super Mario and Donkey Kong , Warren Spectors Epic Mickey bring the traditional skill based gaming of your youth to new generations . Games that you will spend over 20 hours playing , you will bore your friends and family with legendary tales of how you found that mysterious star , secret level , or just the joy you had playing a true video game as opposed to a 4 hour sub par action flick twitch shootemup coded by some Hollywood wannabees with egos to match and a sugar daddy publisher that really can't see its own doomed publishing model ( hint its the same as the likes of Origin , Sierra ,et al)

So whilst Sony and Microsoft go  a-courting new casual gaming debutantes  ,  this year it will be Nintendo and not Sony and Microsoft that are catering for the real core. Like I said , how very, very, very Alanis!

Nintendo you see JUST do video games ... pure video games .There is no video game in the interactive movie that just stopped spinning in your Xbox 360/Playstation 3 drives.

So games fans  as you see a mounting pile of next gen games manure  by your consoles , put down your COD designer controller, get off your imaginary Kinect horse get ready to drink your Mii-lk , power down the Playstation Move/Light Hypnosis machine , defrost your wii mote , and get ready for some old skool .

Oh and if you are in UK get a nice Donkey Kong Tshirt when you pre-order from GAME . Zavvi or Shopto have the best deal for Donkey Kong Country Returns here

Nintendo 3DS order today ! and it costs £217.85 ! or $249.99 in the land of the free ..

Yes you can order the Nintendo 3DS today from Zavvi and get a free carry case + 10 % off a game , the standard package does not include anti-emetics it seems . I wonder if they tested the  possible side effects on humans or animals?

Or for £219.99 from Amazon UK get the Nintendo 3DS Handheld Console (Cosmos Black) or Nintendo 3DS Handheld Console (Aqua Blue)

..

To rub salt into our EU eyes , over in the States [USA] people are complaining the Nintendo 3DS is overpriced at $249.99  which translates to around £157.70!

And to add more insult the games are region locked ... 1 year from now Nintendo will be losing its CEO , share prices will have been Bowsered and no one will want to rescue Princess Peach anymore , this is the beginning of the fall of Nintendo , it happened to Sega , and long ago it happened to Atari , it happened because they were fleecing their sheep so fast the wool could not grow back in time .. plus thanks to the wonders of insheeption I have just sowed songs of freedom into dreams of gamers around the world...waking them up from the nightmare of slavery to now out of date games and games console retail models..

Igor .... yes Masster ... time for my medication......

And what if you buy two of these and have them frying your retinas with multiple 3d images - what will be the effect on a generation of gamer kids wielding the  Nintendo 3DS , Village of the Damned style mutation or evolution ?

And I am only slightly joking as this fugly handheld  actually comes with a health warning , for under 6 year olds and their parents , how long before the first law suit ? We all play games far longer than we watch a 3d movie at a cinema or a large screen tv , so aren't we all at risk ? Do you really take a break every 15 minutes? How did Nintendo measure the cut off for age groups , were these tested on actual children? What will the Tea Party and Soccer mom armies make of this new potential threat ?Und so  the best way to keep your eyes and that of infants safe would be to limit your use of the 3DS by not buying one at all! At least wait until the early adopters , i.e. control group of kids and their  owners are tested for problems !

Chilling thoughts indeed and you thought that nice Mr Apple was evil.......... it will take more than a million apps to take down the 3DS!  Hahahahahhahahhahahhahhahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But take down the Nintendo 3DS ...they will! At £217 this is iPod touch territory , and many a smart phone price , when there are so many devices fighting for space in your pockets are you really going to carry one of these too , and then lug around physical media , remember that , yeah like you carry around Cds for music !

At £40 a game this is twice the cost of next gen console gaming and around 80 to a zillion times many iOS and Android apps (the zillion times refers to totally free stuff....)

Looking at the games line up I think I will pass , until Metroid turns up , but even then the handheld market now belongs to iOS and Android  , rehashing old classics for a small screen experience .. did they not do that with the  Gameboy,GBA , DS ,Dsi , Dsi XL . Haven't y`all been buying the same games over and over again for higher costs with each iteration of Nintendo handheld?

Thanks to iOS and Android we are far more used to buying or getting games for super low prices , and several a day free  , there is no way the over complex tech in this handheld will ever receive the kind of developer attention that the Apple and Google based slates and phones already have .

So in 3DS you have a big seller on launch in Japan , but which will still be outsold by the psp's next great thing / Monster hunter whatever , it will sell slightly less in the US and UK . But it's long term sales will be significantly dented by competitors.

There is no way either Sony or Nintendo can turn the handheld gaming revolution back , my £217 is going towards an i5 slate and the iPad 2 .

And the final insult to the 3DS from the new handheld gaming revolution is that you only feel sick after paying so much for an iPad not as result of using it like the Nintendo 3DS !

And another thing I already have the most powerful handheld ever made as my next post will show you.....

E3 2011 Nintendo keynote :old friends chanting ...Wii U.. Wii U..Wii U.. Wii U...Wii U

First off the Nintendo E3 2011 keynote did not put mii to sleep like the Sony one . Starting solidly with Miyamoto san , and a translator that managed to complete translations before old Shigeru had a chance to actually complete a sentence in Japanese . Either this was telepathy or the teleprompt timing had been Bowsered ...

It was great to see a master games designer speak , Iwata san also shone although  Mr Fils Aime looked a bit off this year ,  however all 3 outdid any other grovelling CEO at this years E3 2011 keynotes.

What was not so great was the substance , Nintendo are masters at selling old rope , and this was the aim of the entire presentation .

Of course somewhere in the litany of rehashes of rehashes of rehashes of Nintendo staples , was the announcement of the Wii U ... which was no surprise at all because everyone in the known universe knew it was coming...

Do you remember that amazing E3 when the Wii mote came out and Miyamoto and co played Wii Tennis with a totally unplanted audience member? Well there was none of that kind of awesome at this presentation.

Wii do love Miyamoto san , wii have respect for what Nintendo is trying to do with the Wii U  and it will make a welcome purchase as our old 360s and PS3s gather dust....

But let us be deathly serious for one moment ,  iOS and Android are killing the traditional console manufacturers , gaming has already moved from the TV ... to the tablet and the phone , and the gaming laptop with a resurgent PC gaming market . All these platforms are what Nintendo are hoping to claw back some market share from.... By the time it launches Wii U , Windows 8 tablets , and iPad 3 , as well as the next gen of Android tablets will dent Nintendos market share even more .

And of course it will rely or try to rely on Zelda Mario etc to counter this , but these are ageing giants , a little Angry Bird for instance is now as recognisable by gamers and non gamers as Mario Zelda or Link . And Apple and Google are bigger brands than Sony or Nintendo...

Even the might of these gaming legends cannot take on a tiny phone App , and that is because Nintendo like Sony have no answer to Apples  iTunes store , no answer to the Android App store and absolutely no answer to Steam or the likes of Onlive and browser/social network gaming .

Saying that they do will not alter this harsh reality. They cannot compete with the new boys and girls ..

The era of console led gaming is over , and Nintendo present well , but look closer and you will see it is just old rope , in HD , pseudo 3D , or streamed to a controller that wishes ....wishes it were an iPad ....Xoom or any of the million or so devices that now take up our gaming time .

I remember Zelda , Mario , Mario 3D , etc but been there done that , do not want to do it again , and again , and again .

Nintendo need to wake up with NEW IP , and RETIRE some old IP , why is the most respected games designer of our time locked into an endless cycle of rehashing a few staple games ?

Free Miyamoto san now ! Wait and see when Apple buys Nintendo you the games fan will rejoice ....keynote presentations by Steve Jobs and Miyamato san .... now that would sell some old rope......
