Time enough for some Dreamcast Classics ......

Having exhausted ALL the next gen games , my thoughts turn to the Dreamcast and today I will mostly be playing the above ...mostly .... and if you have to ask why ... you'll never know....

This is Shenmue the greatest introduction to Japan that any video game has ever managed from riffing off the symbiotic USA and Nihon post dubya dubya two relationship ,intricately modelled locales , with sights you will see on your next visit or remember from  your last one ,with detailed representations of day to day Japanese life   down to the patterned wool on jumpers and plaid skirts ...... oh and there is a pretty awesome game that accompanies the Shenmue beautiful virtual Japanese world , Molyneux could learn a thing or three here ,  did I mention this is Yu Suzukis finest ? and the UK pal version also lets you play in Japanese with Ingrish subtitles .....

Burning Rangers is one of the finest looking Saturn games produced , built with code tools at the time that were deigned to outshine the flashy transparencies of its great rival the irrepressibly flashy Sony Playstation. The gameplay of course did shine , and this is one of those games that needs a next gen update , or at the very least a release as DLC on PSN , Xbox Live or as now is the norm on iOS and Android: 

If Burning Rangers pushed the 3d capabilities of the Saturn to the point where proud owners now felt less envious of the PSONE  , games like   X-Men Children of the Atom showed clearly where the Saturn could not just equal but surpass the Sony machine , with  near perfect ports of Capcom 2d Arcade classics , there was even a cartridge to add extra RAM , just to rub it in ... Many people experienced their first Bezerker Barage whilst playing this game which is the finest Saturn 2d fighter.

Dark Saviour is of course a Climax ,the famed designer of the Landstalker/Timestalkers series ,  classic , the mixture of isometric spinny rotaty and 3d graphics set it immediately apart from all the other RPGs of its generation and most of todays as well .  

Virtual On Cybertroopers , is not a game it is a sport , an art , a perfection of rock paper scissors game mechanics , played out in the armour of giant mech duellists ,that move at SPEED , that's Manga/Anime speed and most definitely not in the plodding trundling Western FASA Mechwarrior tradition.

Virtual on is a perfect game , one you can take years to master , or play for minutes , if you hook this to a pc and two force feedback pros , the ones that jump into your hands ! you can go beyond  emulating the original version . Mere Mortals should seek out the twinsticks , the Saturn versions are far superior to those released for the Dreamcast.

Oo-la-la! It took ages but Sega makes good with the first Dreamcast Collection for Xbox 360 and PC

Yes here at Thegameveda we all own these on the Sega Dreamcast, yes we all have errhm seen them running on PC Dreamcast Emulators , but now how cool is it going to be own them on your Xbox 360 and PC ?   Available to play and download from 25/02/11 .  Me I am waiting for Virtual On Ortorio Tangram to hit the PC , there must be a few million Virtuoid pilots out there just waiting....waiting ... If the PC versions are on Steam ,like other Sega releases then woah baby this starts another of my Steam list addictions. Why are games on Steam like Pokemon ...discuss....

YAKUZA 4 battle demo on PSN : brevity and familiarity breed contempt?

Yesterday saw the release of a  Yakuza 4  three or four scene battle demo released on the Playstation  3 ,with game play and moves less impressive than the Playstation 2 original , this is one to download , try , and remove from your HDD  , before it has time to cool down from the 5 minutes it takes to play through... From this demo there certainly  is no sign of the excellence that got the game 38/40 in Famitsu and the Award for Excellence from the  Japan Game Awards 2010..

The banzai bit is the fact that as Sega are desperate to plug the game already , it is highly likely Nishki fans , retailers everywhere will take a Katana to the price , this will be a £17.95 /$20.00 game within in a month of release. 

Hey you know I play these games because the Yakuza series is where the Shenmue team and Seishin lives on .. let us hope this is just a dodgy demo and the game and story live up to the Yakuza name .

Regardless like it's predecessors  you will see this game hit the bargain bin very quickly in the USA and UK : so it is  no desu ka for now !

Shogun Total War 2 Demo blooming at 5120 by 1600 .. just in time for this years Sakuras

Coming back down to Earth , thegameveda has taken a day off from playing every game in existence on the ion powered joojoo. 


Today I present 5120 by 1600 screen shots of the Shogun 2 Total War Demo , running on Steam and what passes as my gaming rig this week .... Creative Assembly and Sega's latest Total War iteration impresses from the moment it boots up , effortlessly detecting my 5120 by 1600 res , all cgi also stretches across multiple monitors . That is cool I tell you , the number of games I play where the intro video has black borders , whilst the main game runs at far higher resolutions really annoys . Shogun 2 does not! 


Shogun 2 has a very impressive engine , in that it scales down to an atom powered tablet like the joojoo , or dials up detail to suit more specialist gaming pcs. Oh it is not perfect yet , but is our hardware? 


If you were thinking that Total War was getting olde , fret not , Shogun 2 is what makes PC gaming and Steam such guilty pleasures , high art ,culture and history as gaming , and the music is simply sublime ...  For the budding young Sun Tzu there is some strategy in there too..


Shogun 2 can run on humble hardware but it is a game that cries out for multiple monitors , and in the distant near future a Kinect control scheme , or even a Playstation Move one , think about it...you have seen the generals in Ran , waving the butterfly shaped batons , your PlayStation Move controller would make a perfect sub, and eureka it is authentically Japanese too! Genius ... 


Don't laugh it worked for R.U.S.E!


These screens are from the same historical battle I lost on the joojoo .... pre my 72 hour Crysis 2 Demo frenzy (  71 hours to get on a server ..1 hour of fps action )....too many good games on PC this month ....

my work done , time for some green tea , I was not in blue by the way.......
