Celebrating STAR TREK ONLINE 1ST Year Anniversary 5120* 1600 style

Cryptic are legends for taking on Star Trek at a time when the movies and series were/ are stuck in a rut , producing a game , and a MMO at that , creating a community and sustaining it over a year , and  doing so using a paid subscription model is no mean feat . Star Trek Online was never going to be in financial tribble  for  Star Trek fans are never going to forget Trek , even if publishers and accountants mistakenly conclude they have ,for people like me just the ability to fly around a star base with  Earth in the background ,already had me converting my Beta to a lifetime subscription as soon as the game launched.

To celebrate 1 year of STO Cryptic have littered the game with these pseudo holograms ,as well as showering bonuses on long term players   , which some how includes me , as  I have managed to play the game for 200 hours..... without progressing past the space dock area!

Remember when it used to take days for armies of German Commodore Amiga public domain coders to ray trace pictures like these at around a 10th of the res and detail ..if only Factor 5 had not been tempted by the Dark Side!

5120 by 1600 STO gaming and yes you can read the in game menu text !

In the future STO will likely go freemium , as other great MMOs have done , but with fanatical fans , and ever expanding content this will not be for a considerable while . The lifetime sub itself is only really the price of 3 or 4 console games , and you are hardly going to get the same experience from those as you are from a full blown PC MMO  like Star Trek Online. Come on aren't you bored of generic third person fps sequels by now ?  


Currently there are discounts for the lifetime sub to celebrate 1 year of STO . So if you fancy hamming it up in the largest virtual Star Trek universe outside of your head , give it a go . Trek is not serious , even when it is serious ala TNG ,  it is ironic ,sarcastic and constantly takes the mick out of itself , so play with your tongue firmly in your cheek to get the maximum enjoyment.Play with a Tribble skinned mouse and Klingon forehead ridges for a slice of  Shakari

Star Trek Online on Joojoo a Multitouch Windows 7 Vulcan salute to all the nay sayers...

A year ago the brightest and shiniest tech blogs told you that the joojoo tablet could not even run Flash:Even more vitriol was poured on the idea that Windows 7 would be of any use on the tablet form factor..... Well then...


This is Star Trek Online , the 12gb install , full PC MMO , running on just such a joojoo tablet with Windows 7 and it flies.. Maybe it is the maturity of the game engine , but I did not expect to be able to play this game at this speed or detail . The fact that I am doing so using a touch screen adds infinitely to the Star Trek atmosphere , as any PAD fan will tell you!..  STO has been sitting on my gaming rig for a year almost , yesterday I put the install data onto my joojoo ssd to see how the nVidia Ion handled the game .In fact ,Cryptic if you are listening this is the way I am always going to play.Lets take the USS 3ch3lon out for a spin using touch!

Speaking of which  . pinch and zoom works , rotating the screen and using all the HUD controls , just a finger touch away , launching photon torpedoes by touching an on screen control is way more 25 th century than than clicking a mouse button! If you must you can control the game with any joypad including your younger siblings 360 wireless pad , and even the onscreen touch Windows keyboard as I will show you later....

First lets start with a basic tour:

Now let us get down to some combat , again check the speed of the game , and the detail , this is my first attempt at touch screen combat by the way , at least that's my excuse ....

and now having discovered the target camera let's try again 

and if you do not have an external keyboard handy , you can play with the onscreen keyboard too!

and it is not all space combat! here are some pictures of missions that require you to have boots on the ground, all running happily on the joojoo tablet...

and every one's favourite the Galaxy Map ( which you can pinch and zoom to really show off to the half borg Valkyrie you always wanted to impress)

all in all certainly not bad for tablet and OS that receive so many biased negative vibes from Cupertino para-sites

What you need on your tablet IS your desktop, not some cut down or streamed facsimile , with all the freedom that comes with a full OS running the same software and drivers as your main pc , as you can see this is possible , the hardware exists already to blow away the locked phone os tablets that current market leaders would shackle you to. 


My year old joojoo can do it ! The joojoo as I have stated before is the Millennium Falcon of tablets , it launched with its hyperdrive sabotaged , but packing the hardware that it does , and  after making quite a few special modifications my scruffy looking nerf herding self , she's the fastest tablet in the galaxy... till i manage to stick an i7 mobo in there.....

Using tablets for a year now , I  moved past the bling and Starbuck posing of mine iPad 1/2, and have seen how gaming with  Windows 7 on a Tablet completely pwns gimped a phone OS like Android and iOS . You see Onlive , Gaikai ,Steam , browser based MMOS , and millions of full pc games are my app store....  My tablet is a desktop replacement , with no compromises . 

Seeing Crysis 2 , or Assassins Creed 2  , Batman Arkham , or playing my Steam collection  on a tablet  is slightly more impressive than waiting for my Infinity Blade App to update and run at that funny 1024 768 res..... 

The joy of playing full PC games on a tablet , there is no App for that

Star Trek Online's The Foundry : Tribble at Mill???????

Star Trek Online now lets you mess around with something called The Foundry , considering the average Trek fan could spend an entire Vulcan  lifetime playing the MMO ,  the question is will adding user created content  elevate Star Trek Online to the marriage breaking and making epic status of past great OCD MMOS ?

Acer Iconia Test no. 4: Dual Touch Screen MMO gaming courtesy of Star Trek online

Naturally you need to know if the Acer Iconia can handle MMOs , so here we have thegameveda testing Cryptic`s Star Trek Online , first a passive mission to show how the interface works , note the HUD can be resized to suit your fingers! Also note that the game plays across both screens , at speed , and you get a tremendous sense of vertigo looking down at the tablet . Excuse the gaming skills , I was playing with one hand whilst filming with the other at an angle that caught both screens (some of the time !) 

It's multitasking but not as you know it ..fascinating...absolutely fascinating ....
Right now I have Star Trek Online still running but minimized whilst I imported the above video , edited in on screen with Windows Live Moviemaker , uploaded it in youtube in the other half of that screen , and in the 2nd screen typed this blog entry  whilst the youtube video finished uploading . That is multitasking , made elegantly simple on the Acer Iconia , and the thing is not even warm ! This dual screen tablet clearly packs more punch than any other tablet pc and is uniquely suited to multitasking  with a UI that is geared towards multitasking with programs ,productivity applications , games ( a full MMO!) all able to be open and accessible thanks to the Iconia's unique Windows Manager :

Lenovo X220 T Tablet test no.6 : Star Trek Online MMO gameplay using Pen Touch and Nubbin!

Star Trek Online runs well on every tablet I have tested from the Atom and Ion powered Joojoo , the  dual screen Toshiba Libretto and Acer Iconia ( spread across 2 screens no less...)  . It also runs mighty fine on my multiscreen desktop at 5120 by 1600 , but only on the i7 powered Lenovo X220 T , do  I get  : Pen and touch control  , together with trackpad , nubbin AND full keyboard ... it is a new way of playing ... but first you will need to learn  how to play  as you can see in the following vids :

Star Trek Online is FREE TO PLAY NOW Mr Sulu! KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!

Now STO is free to play you have no excuse , the space combat is pretty darn awesome , the planet based missions are none too bad . The client runs on everything from an atom powered joojoo and scales up to your cross fired 7870s to play stunningly at 5120 by 1600 .. still here go make it so , the lore alone is worth the effort and you now have something to do whilst you wait for Star Trek 2 ( the new Star Trek 2 )




Now we have SWTOR and STO , and Battlestar Galactica Online  our scifi virtual lives are complete well almost someone has yet to do Star Wars vs Star Trek vs Battlestar .. 

And me being a fan I just realised I bought a lifetime sub .....KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!

well so I bought a lfe time sub to support the developers and spent 2 years in spacedock ... and then it went free to play .... well the needs of the many out way the needs of the few ... don`t they ?  


STO should live longer and prosper thanks to this move and if they can tie in more tv and film content they may just as well call this Star Trek Resurrection and my lifetime sub sacrifice will have been worth it...........
