To truly feel the pain of Mafia 2 you need to play the original Mafia on the PC

Firstly Mafia on the Xbox or PS2  is not Mafia .Throw away your console version

And Mafia 2 is not Mafia : hold on to your greenbacks

The real version of Mafia , is the original PC version , on the PC,  Mafia bested all the sandbox games of its generation. That's all of them !

How did it manage this ?  Not with its  great story told through a hundred odd missions in an open and evolving game world . Not with the free play mode after you complete the main single player game. But with ease and class with which it sucks you into the era of 30s mobsters , all the references it draws from are of the highest calibre . You will recognise  the great Jimmy Cagney , Edward G Robinson , Elliot Ness/Untouchables riffs that are used to create an atmosphere  that easily made it stand out from the then console only GTA III ,   And it never needs to resort to the bawdiness of  the GTA series or that seen in Mafia 2 .

The idea that a game must  have strip joints and loose women running around has become a marker of modern day  lazy games design , it only worked in GTA because its a joke , not to be taken seriously and there was always a substantial game to play  . Yet several lesser sandbox games focus on the bawdiness aspect of GTA  - The Saboteur and now Mafia 2  , they are even using a glamour model handing out tshirts ! to promote  Mafia 2  in the UK . So you will probably spend longer looking for playboy covers than actually playing the game , and you may be doing that out of boredom . As the only free roaming component of the games beautiful city seems to be looking for playboy covers whilst playing through the strictly linear missions [for 10 hours]

The original Mafia did not need to sink to this level , and you will see for yourself how low Mafia 2  sinks in a certain cut scene , wow see sex does sell !

On the other hand the original  Mafia on the PC is pure class :

Mafia on the PC has attention to detail to point where you can shoot out the glass , the bulb , and the chrome from a head lamp on an accurately rendered period car , if the bad guys are hiding behind [or the good guys ] you just shoot out the tires , which lowers the car /jalopy/truck just enough for you to then shoot the period Mob hats off their heads before you finish the job !

All of this is possible because Mafia on the PC has the most refined gunplay of all sandbox games , Lost Heaven is not a place where you  point the cursor with your joypad and spray the screen , or demolish every thing  with a rocket launcher  .  This is fast ,fluid , strategic pinpoint mouse controlled pixel perfect gunplay , shoot through a window to take the hat off the guy hiding behind , ducking behind a church pew counting the number of bad guys , noting their elevated positions  and sussing out how many bullets you have left in your weapons , reloading is thus  a major part of any gun battle in PC Mafia  , and like all the best shootemups you can play with skill and added danger , challenging your self to take out the bad guys with less and less bullets and in ever more elaborate ways that the game engine on the PC allows.

All only possible with the precision allowed by a mouse and keyboard , no auto locking bulky joypads  here!

You know that hardcore Half Life /Doom feeling where you have near zero health 1 bullet and 2 bad guys standing between you and more health and 1 ammo pack ? You find these moments in Mafia , but dressed in a beautiful Chicago mob period rendered environment that only the PC could handle, one that you can happily drive around spouting You durrty rhaatt   , and feel proud about it .

As a result of the the high res [for the time] and mouse control on the PC each of the Mafia  gunfights , small or large has much more finesse than many full blown 3rd person actioners. The gameplay on consoles does not come close ,

None of its contemporaries had this finesse  , each set piece gun battle outdoes many a full blown 3rd person generic modern day shooter . And you will want to play through many of them again with skill.

They also fully use the environments in the game, and I don't mean you stand on top of a building and shoot someone standing on another building . In Mafia you actually walk through , and work through a building or location . So whether your clearing an out of town airport or engaged in a gun battle in a Cathedral , you work through the location and use every part of it strategically.  Many a sandbox game loses its magic as  you realise you are  driving around facsimiles of buildings or walking around on top of them , in Mafia the designers took the the gameplay into them.

Then we come to the city , the period model of the sandbox  in which you evolve your character from a taxi driver to  mob hero /villain also evolves with you , when you start many bulidings will be under construction , by the end of the game there will be full blown skyscrapers , factories ,housing projects  , suburbs etc.

After finishing the epic 100 odd missions you enter the free roaming part of the game , with the most banal of side missions adding to the value of your game purchase and allowing you to appreciate the great care and detail gone into creating the games city scape.

The linear soon to be DLC plagued game that is Mafia 2 is not in the same league as Mafia   and  NOT the game many fans were holding out for , wait  a month or 2 and it will be selling for half the price. £14.99 on Steam this Christmas I wager

Mafia 2 should have led on PC and had a MMORPG component in addition to the single player , with its rich world ,atmosphere , and combat model it  could have succeeded where Realtime World`s (RIP) APB failed. Instead someone took the decision of  insulting fans with the usual developer holding back game content to be sold as DLC later model , and filling the beautiful world with find the old playboy cover quests!

So if you really want to play an excellent open sandbox game go get the PC version of the original Mafia . Just think it costs less than 1/10th of the cost of the upcoming DLC for Mafia 2!

I hope Illusion Softworks now focus on a modern day conflict version of Hidden and Dangerous...and give us the whole game and nothing but the game ! You can furgeddabout your  free hair cuts, and Tshirts! And developers take note  we prefer our Dames real not virtual don`t we?

L.A. Noire killer 40`s murder mystery is point and click gaming Jazz for the Rockstar generation

The gaming world is gearing up to solve mysteries , interrogate suspects by judging changes and subtle  nuances in the incredibly detailed character models of Rockstar`s L.A Noire. The sort of detail that 1990s games achieved with something we used to refer to as FMV , though admittedly it was a little harder to to judge what exactly a Kilrathi`s eyebrows being raised signified ...

get your dose of LA Noire at Zavvi , or Game in the UK or Search Amazon.com for la noire in the USA

The noire / mystery genre  has been tackled before , although you have to look long and hard into gaming history to find a great example , on the PC the finest stab is actually scifi based with Westwood`s Bladerunner with over 70 characters all boasting life and game altering A.I.  Of course you could go back to the dawn of gaming and Melbourne Houses Sherlock Holmes games  , again with amazing life changing AI for characters that you subtly interrogate using Watson impressing logic ....and Inglish

And there you have it all "detective" games claim to have earth shattering AI that makes you feel like a real sleuth.

But most fall into the classic adventure game design trap of multiple choice guessing and trying to connect completely unconnected objects together and use them on something at another location.

So does Rockstars LA Noire do things any better , or is it just a point and click adventure with awesome facial capture, and a gimped sandbox game environment  ,we the public will find out presently .  The press are loving it ..

Now if someone could take the innovative non linear AI of Westwood`s Bladerunner , and the non linear game design of the old Sherlock Holmes Melbourne House classic and transplant these  into the gaming tech that Rockstar have , well then,  we may even have a game to  raise an eyebrow or two on  Major Shepard`s multiple choice-ing  cgi face...

At the very least with LA Noire  we are all about to get a dose of authentic Jazz , and I mean minus British ex comedians who play well known USA doctors doing cover versions ...Bl`Adder ..indeed

check out the Gametrailers review below
.

LA Noire : The case of the console killing game chapter 5 : Conclusion Epilogue and new DLC

Chapter 5 : going deep ....

Prologue

In  last weeks episode or chapter 4,  we left our intrepid do gooder  thegameveda placing the life of a beloved PS3 phat , updated to the 3.65 OS and at least 5 years old...in the hands of the alleged console killing game L.A. Noire  , after weeks of interrogation investigation and vacillating , thegameveda has now concluded investigations into the case of the console killing game ... how good the good stuff is , how bad the bad stuff is and whether it kills your console...or mine at least..

Verdict :

good stuff :

1. Rockstar and Sony are innocent : L A Noire has been whirring in thegamevedas PS3 60gb console for 5 days now , and there is absolutely no sign of the console heating up any more than normal , or the dreaded sudden yellow death...
2. Rockstar`s Team Bondi have created a sublime game world , anyone who wants to tour a post WW2 L A ,  will have a great time ,and  there is a unique game that comes along with the sandbox too.
3. L A Noire nails the chase sequence: All great  Cops and Robbers films are  about the chase ,   Keystone Cops to Rigs and Murtaugh , Starsky and Hutch ...and errh that very long chase sequence in Violent Cop ... you get to do all that stuff in L A Noire.
4. The way the game changes pace from fast on foot and car chases , shoot outs to slow investigative antics is excellent . It gives you more time to live in the games beautiful world

bad stuff
1. L A Noire is no Heavy Rain . Quantic Dream changed gaming with their detective/murder mystery .. L A Noire is great but not quite a gaming milestone the way Heavy Rain is.....
2. There is nothing noire about the colourful world that you inhabit : For starters it is not  black and white  , if ever a game could have pulled off using a black and white filter it was this ,and so Edward G Robinson would not be seen being shot dead in this games bright and colourful world. Nor would Mr Cagney be shouting you duuhhty rats ..as ....
3.The game paints an almost pristine picture of LA ,even the dirt has specular highlights ...There is no hallmark shadow /halo/mist/lighting... except for the brilliant menu screen ... the only "noire" looking part of the game.L.A. Noire should have been full of  black and white shadowy alley ways like that , instead it`s most atmospheric part is a menu screen...Think how important lighting is to the Noire genre ,from the way the lack of light or a sillohouette is used to introduce a character ,like a curvacious moll or the the vilest of sharp suited villains ,vital to setting the ambience  and fear of a scene ,  the flash of gunfire from a tommy gun or a smoking pistol..or cigarette... there is none of that captured in this game.
4. There is no grit or grime , steam rising from vents in the sidewalk or street ... people smoke but the smoke does not add ambience it is just sfx.
5. The accents are all  authentic but the dialogue does not take  you back to the era of noire films , great to hear real accents ,but the racial stereotypes are back :   most non American  ears ( tainted by 60 years of Hollywood Noire)  place Polish, and  Scotts Irish accents to.....the East Coast NY and Boston .. not LA .. and were there really that many Hispanic front line cops in the LAPD  20 years before the American Civil Rights movement took hold ? This may be the version of LA in 47 the developers  want to project but how realistic is it?
6. You play a detective working for the police , but all the greatest fictional Noire characters are typically Private Investigators like Marlowe , or outsiders  like  Sam Spade with molls like Ms Bacall hanging off their arms.. in L A Noire we get a partner or  Tomtom , in a suit  who gives you directions .. how about a backstabbing femme fatale assistant or partner ..played by Yvonne Strahovski?Or a digitally remastered Lauren Bacall , Betty Davies , Bogart , Cagney or my favourite Edward G Robinson?
7. The CGI women in L A Noire are fugly....again these do not compare to great femme fatales that made the Noire genre so memorable. Just a silhouette or two and the atmosphere of the whole game would be different... and it would take a hell of lot less GPU power than trying to stretch  polygonal facial muscles across the face of  a virtual would be actress  supposedly in her 20s but which ends up making her look like she is a constipated septuagenarian...
8. WW2 flash backs are too Godfather .... I am on at least my 5th flashback and it really does not add anything to the main game ... and my head keeps playing Godfather music when the flashbacks happen.. and I start craving cannelloni which does not help matters...
9. There is nothing Bogart about your character .. he is young and fresh faced... when he needed to be grizzled , stubbled , smoking , with a drink and women problems , with a bookie chasing him for debts ... the kind of role Bogart and a young Sinatra made their own.
10.The detective part of the game is nowhere near as cool as last years Heavy Rain , there is no urgency in response time , the clues are gathered point and click style , and the interrogations bare more resemblance to Who Want`s to Be a Millionaire than the gritty life changing split second choices we were forced to make in Quantic Dream's classic.
11.The world that Team Bondi have created IS very beautiful , but that defeats the point of the Noire genre altogether ... it points to a younger group of coders , who may have access to criminal records of the time , but probably have to google Chandler , Bogart , Bacall , Cagney and Edward G Robinson to find out they do not have face book pages or are not currently active on twitter.
12. A co op mode would have made this game amazing imagine linking up with friends and frenemies to solve crime ... and think of all those awesome arguments you could have in the car about which route to take , or how to interrogate the suspects with your very own good cop bad cop routine...

Epilogue

This is of course the usual cynicism , thegameveda is delighted by LA Noire , most of all because over the course of a month , waiting to see if it did kill consoles , I found out it does not! We are spoilt nowadays with our games , entire cities sprawl out before us to game in , what LA Noire brings to the sandbox genre , is a tighter linear story but also it slows the frantic pace that these games are noted for , GTA , Read Dead , Prototype, Saints Row , and Red Faction Armageddon ,Mafia , are all about ACTION , from the get go ..  LA Noire slows the pace down , you can take your time around this city , and the missions/investigations.. it really does give you more time to sync to the gaming world .
L A Noire is one of the games of the year ,with enough detail and care crafted into it`s design to keep you playing .The combat and action game play is close to the excellent original Mafia on PC , the clue finding flawed and the famed interrogation based on facial expression basically a hap hazard multiple choice ... but it all comes together with great production values , I just  hope there is a black and white and noire lighting filter unlock , at least for the distant PC version.Or a mission editor .. think of all the great Noire films  you could recreate with this engine .. now there is an idea for Team Bondi`s future DLC ...

thegameveda celebrated this act of gaming Russian Roulette by purchasing the Rockstar Pass , so now there is even more L A Noire on my PS3 hdd , and still no sign of overheating , and the case of the console killing game has been concluded ...for now.....

Prepare to Enter the Sandbox with Sleeping Dogs ... a Shenmue sequel to make Yu Suzuki proud..or wake up...

Sleeping Dogs is the latest sandbox to take on and differentiate itself from Grand Theft Auto. Where the True Crime games were also rans, like Volition with Saints Row the Third , United Front Games have managed to differentiate and free their sandbox franchise from the shadow of Rockstars genre defining series.

You need the PC version because.... because the Ltd Edition is a steal at £22.74 from Get Games and registers on Steam. The PC version comes with high res textures and 3D support ,the latter which I am testing on the Lenovo X220T with ST1080 HMD.

This is a raw game on PC, looking gorgeous even on low detail settings but the way it has been patched the last 2 days it seems the coders have yet to optimise it for every PC config out there. At launch I could not get the game to scale to full screen , but now patch 1.4 ( a 2nd since release) has fixed that and other foibles.

Lets move onto the game, this is the finest depiction of Hong Kong since Shenmue 2,  which Sleeping Dogs reminds me of in many ways with styling of the character ,even his leather jacket and blue jeans all nudging memories of the legendary Shenmue series. All that is missing is the character losing his bag to a thief as he arrives in Hong Kong.  As we all know Shenmue transmorphed into the Yakuza series . Don't worry though the coders of Sleeping Dogs keep their influences to Shenmue and not the later longer running largely linear Sega series.

So you  may expect the in game  fighting to be arcadey like Yakuza , the exploration limited like Yakuza and you would be wrong. We all wanted Yakuza to develop into Shenmue 3, but instead Sega turned it into a Zombie cash in... The fighting in Sleeping Dogs is free flowing, more reminiscent of the PPK Tora Tora Tora fests of Virtua Fighter than the Final Fight Yakuza clashes . Where combat feels gimmicky in the Yakuza series and even comical , the combat in Sleeping Dogs is  free flowing, brutal ,tactical a little bit of Assassins Creed mixed with some Batman Arkham only far less one button pushing on rails heavy.. You can develop your own style use the environment to exact various gruesome ends for your foes. And it never feels like one button mashing as AC and Batman Arkham can at times and unlike Assasin's Creed or Arkham or even Enter the Dragon , you stand a fair chance of losing some of those fights which makes a nice change from knowing Ezio , Bruces Wayne or Lee are certain to despatch their foes as soon as they set their sights on them.

So how does  the game play on the Intel HD3000 ? Here is the first video I made with the game played with 3D on and at 1024 by 768.

In the first video my first play through I had 3D on and would expect the game to play well based on my experiences with games like Spec Ops and Max Payne 3 in 3D on the same machine : but we get some lag

On day 1 the game was released without proper screen scaling or resolution setting options on PC so playing on a 1080p monitor produces a border when full screening the game at lower resolutions if you could get a lower resolution saved.. to counter this use your GPU settings to to scale the picture.

The 3D option does light up and you can alter depth, but considering 3D is the major reason I bought the game on Steam I am disappointed, if there is 3D the ST1080 is picking it up as frame packed and it is subtle at this stage . Myself I will wait for Tridef to have a plug in for this game, based on my experience with Max Payne 3 and other games it should be insane.

so what is the cause of this lag ?

To find out I played at all resolutions 3D and non 3D enabled and found that enabling that option halves or even worse than halves frame rates at every resolution , on the bright side disabling 3D also doubles or trebles your frame rate

Lets go look for that lag : note we are looking for playable game frame rates with the Intel HD3000 not high end 200 FPS scores that comes later with my desktop test!

00:00 to 09.43 the game is played at 768 by 480 59h Hz 16:10 with 3D enabled and low settings  : this is the sweet spot for playing with 3D enabled on the ST1080 using just an Intel HD3000

09:55 to 10:45 960 x 600 x 59Hz 16:10 3D enabled and the frame rate drops noticeably

10:46 to 13:14 00:00 640 x 400 x 59Hz 4:3 3D enabled and there is a notable increase in FPS by an order of 10 additional FPS

lets jump the res back up to see the difference again :

13:17 to 14:14 1024x768x59Hz 4:3 3D on and the lag is back

28:03 to 29:03 768 by 480 59h Hz 16:10 with 3D off and we get  a doubling or more in FPS

29:03 to 29:42 1920 by 1080 59h Hz 16:10 with 3D off the game will not play at this res on the X220T without great lag we are talking 1 fps ! so let us switch back to more optimal resolutions for this game on the Intel HD3000..

30:05 onwards   1366 by 768 59h Hz 16:9  1024 by 68 and 768 by 480 all produced marked speed improvements with 3D off , 768 by 480 is the sweetspot for playing in 3D or non 3D using the Intel HD3000 on the Lenovo X220T.

Games at 1024 by 768 or 1366 by 768 usually fly on Intel HD3000 2nd gen i7 powered Lenovo X220T , give United Front Games time and patches will arrive whatever your hardware , after all we waited 6 months for Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2 updates ...It has only been 2 days since release...

The finest sandbox games let you forget the mission altogether and just mess around , I have played every GTA game never finished one , but I venture I have played longer than most just because of the endless fun you can have playing in the sand box and with all of the toys it contains ..wow just like when we were three no?

This is chaotic freedom is where  GTA ,Just Cause 2 ,Saints Row The Third, Mercenaries (the first), the Saboteur, Prototype, Mafia ( the first),Crackdown ( the first) and of course any modern Bethesda RPG  get things right and what Yakuza and No More Heroes on the Wii got things wrong.

Sleeping Dogs easily sits amongst the giants of sandbox gaming, no mean feat for a game that was once cancelled by Activision. I have no intention of finishing it any time soon or ever but I am going to have a fine time exploring Hong Kong and pushing the sandbox.

Und so having sorted our hardware specs and settings out , it's time to Enter the Sandbox at speed with no lag and with our optimal resolutions for the Intel HD3000 of 1024 by 768 and 768 by 480 with 3d off ...

I will revisit this game with dekstop gpu resolution tests so come back .. when I am brave enough to refill the water/tec cooler on my desktop...

get to Steam now to download the Steam demo of Sleeping Dogs , if your hardware cannot handle it then go for the onlive version which will release soon ... lets hope they do a touch version as per LA Noire then it will a must buy for me.. Sleeping Dogs full spec on the Nexus 7 ... awesome..
