ARMA X: Anniversary Edition

Yes we are all playing Modern Warfare 3, slick action packed action packed action in an action packed sandwich packed in a action packed chicken stuffed into an action packed turkey wired with action packed explosive trigger placed in our action packed gaming dinner plates at our annual Call of Duty action packed Thanksgiving ... and see I didn`t mention Oscar Miking once ... wait one ... way back when Call of Duty was aping WW2 movies and not even the Michael Bay one ... a little software house called Bohemia Interactive produced the most technically astounding and ambitious military shooter ever ... no not Call of Duty ... thegameveda is tangoing Operation Flashpoint .

To this day there has been no other military FPS that is so detailed , no other FPS not even Battlefield that matches the scope , size, use of military hardware , vehicles , planes etc , and has a sandbox open world , that users can mod and still mod to this date .

Then again there is Bohemia Interactive`s follow up to Operation Flashpoint , no not Operation Flashpoint 2 , but the ARMA series which is 50% off on Steam this Wednesday .. for the price of some COD DLC you could own the entire ARMA series , gotta love Steam so get Bohemian like me and Oscar Mike over to the ARMA page ... damn that Call of Duty it sends me back to my playing army in the school playground days .ratatatatat ..for you Tommy ze war is offa! Playing army in school playgrounds is of course now banned ... as the kids are too  busy in actual wars....Peace out hippies!

How and why Bohemia Interactive's ARMA II franchise ruled the Steam summer 2012 sale

It is said that the Call of Duty and Medal of Honour and even the great D.I.C.E.s Battlefield series have all lost their way being watered down by suits on high to cater for the now failing and positively geriatric next gen console generation.

Whilst those same suits are now beginning to recognise the PC as THE fastest growing platform with Windows 8 Apps, Steam, Onlive, Gaikai, millions of legacy series that are more loved today by fans than the execs who abandoned them and resigned the once great PC talent of Infinity Ward , DICE ,Treyarch et al to make call of honor 12 hardened battle softcore casual edition could ever imagine.

For over a decade those execs believed PCs to be a 2nd rate option and these casual shooter series though still ported to run faster on PC  don't get shown the love or the money by PC gamers.

Are you a Mod, a console Rocker or a casual Punk? To succeed on PC these execs cannot rely on the added GPU and CPU muscle in our PCs, they need to free the code that they release so people can mod games. Many softcos already realise this and are reaping the benefits.

Take Bohemia Interactive's  ARMA series, the love for that series by PC fans and exclusively PC fans continues, from the days we first got to play with and edit and mod Operation Flashpoint. BECAUSE we got to mod Operation Flaspoint  and even if you did not spend the time developing your own mod , you could look forward to the games community doing it for you .  As we did with Battlefield 2 which has to this day one of the largest modding communities. Now DICE has lost its way with Battlefield 3, there are no great PC mods or total conversions that set the PC gaming community alight, all we are going to get is official Origin delivered DLC. How cool would it be if EA let gamers submit there mods to Origin like Bethesda and Steam are doing with Steamworks and the likes of Skyrim?

Freedom to mess with games for PC gamers is an inalienable right and creates a unique and mutual respect between developer and gamer this is what has kept the likes of ARMA II at the top of the Steam 2012 sale , throughout that sale , any execs who wish to hold on to their expensive suits in 2013 would do well to pay attention ...simply releasing new hardware is not going to be enough.

Today's PC gamer has grown tired of ageing consoles of their youth not because the hardware has aged, but because of the lack of respect hardware and software developers have for us  with neutered gameplay, sub teen infested multiplayer and being dictated to by developers, publishers and so called platform holders..

Tomorrows games are going to have to cater for a console generation that has grown up to become today's PC gamer with all the freedoms and many ways of playing , purchasing and improving games this PC next gen is used to. Facing off against  Windows 8, Apps, Android , iOS, streaming and cloud gaming the next generation of consoles which will again not allow any of the freedoms we love on PC is going to be an epic fail. Developers who were traditionally locked to one platform will also fail. We are rapidly approaching the time when there is no place in living rooms for consoles, in fact we nearing the time when the majority of our time gaming and doing others things is done without  switching on and tempting the Red Ring or Yellow flash of death... In the next round of console releases  I predict that one of the big boys Nintendo or Sony will leave the console field altogether just as Sega and Atari before them, and Coleco and  Magnavox... you know what I'm talkin bout Willis?

They used to talk about the death of PC gaming , but now you have to consider the console as a games delivery service ...it's dead Jim and I find that fascinating....absolutely fascinating ....

class dismissed...

Check out ARMA 2 now on the Steam sale , remember the DLC is also 40% off and all of of the above also applies to the other game that has remained at the top of the Steam summer 2012 sale Skyrim too has 50% off hurry though today is the last day!

Carl Zeiss Cinemizer OLED Headtracker review part 2: ARMA 2 3D and 2D Tanks,Helos and FPS action

Bohemia Interactive are unique amongst the great PC game developers in that they have not allowed their vision or games to be gobbled up by a lack of vision by  predatory publishers ..many great PC code houses have .... Choosing not to water down the Operation Flashpoint sequel and instead giving the PC gaming community the ARMA series . And what a series .. the ultimate military warfare sim. Meanwhile somewhere Codemasters is destroying the good name of Op Flashpoint .. we still have the original though !

And we also have ARMA 2 (and 3 on the way). This is a perfect game to test the Zeiss headtracker with , having so many different control schemes for air and land vehicles as well as on foot sections. So lets go flying , tank driving and on foot soldering and check out how the headtracker performs...

All of which using the Carl Zeiss Cinemizer OLED hmd with headtracker enhances no end . I started by taking up a little bird expecting the headtracker to do the usual in cockpit views , soon however I discovered I could not only use the head tracker to look around , but also to pilot the helos ...

and as you can see in  3D too...

right now for a tank battle , with the headtracker used to aim and move the game camera. With the first part in 3D :

and in 2D

Whilst you may be familiar with the idea of using a headtracker and hmd to control camera rotation in land and air vehicles, the Zeiss brings something new, because it is so precise and mapped to mouse control we can also select targets and because we can do that in cockpits or tank turrets with ease, we can also do the same looking down your soldiers gun sights .. Now with the Cinemizer OLED headtracker you can look for your prey in the FPS sections of this game like so :

The experience is effortless, yes it is a new skill to learn, but really it is as easy as looking at your enemy, turning to face them or scanning the environment for them by looking for them is actually way cooler than dragging a mouse. Remember most games have some jitter built into their cross hair movement to mimic the effects of wind or your pulse as you snipe .. but just check how easy it is to scan for and aim at targets in ARMA 2 using the headtracker.. Improved aiming does not mean you are any faster with the trigger though!

All in all I have heard it said many times once you use a headtracker in a game you never want to go back to plain old mouse or joystick control , the wonder of the Cinemizer OLED headtracker is that it allows you to not only enhance vehicle FOV control ,targeting and flight but brings a whole new level of immersion to the FPS segments of the ARMA series ..

All without lag, or driver install, spacial set up, cost or lengthy calibration associated with traditional headtrackers.

One more important thing to note : your gaming position , the Cinemizer OLED headtracker self calibration is so slick , I spent all of my game time playing this lying back . With this headtracker you never need to have a special gaming chair , space or pose . Just sit or slouch ( !) like you normally do ...you will feel the accuracy as soon as you move that on screen cursor.

More to follow when I finally get my gaming rig refilled with Anti freeze and 3 parts Distilled water...

feeling brave .. don`t need to read the next part of my Zeiss Cinemizer OLED experience ? Purchase  in the UK/EU the Zeiss Cinemizer OLED 3D iPack including iPhone adapter and in the USA the Cinemizer OLED
