Did you by chance purchase Medal Of Honor Limited Edition ...  ? You did well check your email accounts to see if your spot has been reserved on the Battlefield ...3 Beta ...  


thegameveda managed to play the 2 level  Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta more than all the Modern Warfare series put together , so I cannot wait till the Battlefield 3 Beta turns up ... and it is ever so nice of DICE to send out notifications of reservations ..  remember to be a true DICE fan you need to play Codename Eagle.... racing WW1 era Tanks around the games islands Sega Rally style.... 

With EA slightly at war with Valve ... it looks like this maybe the first Origin download for me ... the console versions can be had from the usual suspects Zavvi , Game , etc

Battlefield 3 A***a servers are being flooded by D.I.C.E happy fans ....the 2011 gaming season is now officially op3n

Any more than that I cannot say or D.I.C.E will take my A***a invite away ... interestingly for thegameveda , this is the first time I have used Origin , and if anything can break Steam`s monopoly it will be the release , and more importantly the maintenance and upkeep of Battlefield 3 , patches DLC , and frankly a way more impressive interface than Steam for blogging  and social gaming and gathering from what I have seen so far.... using Origin that is.... I did not reveal any details of the Alp......Mr EA exec ... honest ... right time to Oscar Mike ... before they nab me ... see you on the Battlefield ..3....and if you see me there .. you didn`t see me o.k. ???


The world as we knew it may going to the Simpsons ... but one thing is constant if you play games then life is good ..... grab some friends ( across the world ) and get set as the Battlefield 3 Alpha marks the opening of  the 2011 gaming season ... 


And this year it looks like EA`s Origin is going to play a big part in the festivities ....

2011 is the year digital game distribution  branches out from from Steam to streaming with onlive ,Gaikai and now with the Battlefield 3 Beta to Origin . I have no idea if Valve will ever make up with EA , but who cares is the likely happy battlecry as D.I.C.E. aficionados around the world enter their Steam Battlefield 3 beta keys into Origin . You will find your Beta key in the properties box of Medal Of Honor , I had to download Medal Of Honor to bring up the key , then just cut and paste into the redeem code box of Origin ....

Two days into the Battlefield 3 Beta thegameveda finally gets a game

I take the fact that it has taken me 2 days to get into a game of Battlefield 3 not as a sign of lack of servers , or shockingly unfinished code weeks before launch , but as a mark of respect by fans for the greatest game this year . There simply are so many people eager to play that no amount of server supply will accomdate the demand.

I have to say the one gaming session I did get into was on the PS3 after 2 days spent on a very impressive browser based Battlefield 3 PC game Launcher ( ironic much ?) that allows you to social network your gaming experience at the tap of a keyboard.

This beautiful system is designed to ping your Battlefield experiences across your social network universe , unfortunately at present it is spreading negative waves... but hey this is a mark of respect.. not a criticism .. and if it is then I am sure D.I.C.E. will take it as feedback ... which is the point of the Beta after all ...

When you do get into the game , you will not stop playing , the strangers you play with will become your life long allies , your band of brothers and sisters ... members of the opposing team will become targets of Corleone /Sopranos style vengeance and vendettas .. especially the ones who keep crawling along their bellies and sniping ..or the particularly vile ones that blind you with their flashlights... just take them out with a rocket launcher!

In fact I only stopped playing to type this . One map of Battlefield 3 is already the best gaming experience this year and that is just the Beta ... but then again I said the same about the Alpha...

Long term Battlefield fans are used to games in the series being launched as work in progress , patches following later ... They are also used to modding tools being released .. will this happen and when for the PC we will have to wait and see .. in todays DLC dominated world there may be little room for user created content ...so no Game of Thrones Battlefield 3 mod then....

Just a final warning , do no start playing at midnight , unless you are on extended leave from your life and senses....and take a break every 6 hours or so...

Battlefield 3 Beta stats : were you one of the 9,540,432 people who joined in?

thegameveda was number 3,234,232 on the PC and 5,023,172 on the PS3 .... well who`s arguing? Battlefield 3 is going to be the game of the year ,on PC heralding  EA`s Origin , and for once benefiting from  being developed across formats ,  with a system spec that will not cause you to rush out and have to upgrade your hardware in these dire economic times ( Adieu Europe it was nice knowing you ..)


Check your email and the bean counters at D.I.C.E will have left you a message .. but this is not a statistics blog so why not watch a trailer whilst you make up your mind whether to preorder it from Game or Zavvi....

Windows 8 playing Battlefield 3 on an Atom Ion powered Joojoo tablet

As my gaming PC has lost it`s cooling system , thegameveda has to resort to playing Battlefield 3 on PS3 and on the Joojoo tablet ..check it out ....

They patched my Battlefield ..3 ...PC version and are sending me back to Karkand on PS3

A 3.9gb patch just updated my PC version through Origin downloading at up to 8.1 MB per second! This appears to be the most impressive aspect of this patch which is larger than many full games. Don`t worry though D.I.C.E will get it right eventually , usually it takes around 6 months for a Battlefield game to have most of the bugs ironed out of it ,still my favourite game just a work in progress. E.A. need to stream this game , doing away with patches and downloads , they also need to release development tools and soon or the community skills that built the franchise may be lost altogether. On PC Battlefield rules through user created content not official paid for DLC.


Still I do have the Karkand expansion on the PS3 version , which wise gamer that you are you are already playing right? See you on the Battlefield. . . . and come on D.I.C.E.  enough with the 4  gig  patches you used to give us entire games  like Codename Eagle fully functional at one tenth that size on PC hardware less powerful than today's smart phones...

Preparing for VR : Battlefield 3 1080p 3D HMD gaming with Carl Zeiss Cinemizer OLED headtracking

There's a point where your GPU is fast enough, your CPU is fast enough and you can easily game at any setting at any insane resolution. At this point you realise that although our hardware is always evolving, the way we play is not. 

When you play the same games with the same hardware only now in ghost free OLED 3D with headtracking you are evolving and augmenting how you play, that's the kick the Cinemizer OLED headtracker brings. 

And it brings it without effort to ALL the games you own right now ...


Along time ago, one of the few highlights I found using the Sony HMZT1 was playing FPS games like Battlefield 3. The problem was of course this was at 720p res on a PS3 and of course the intense pain of using the HMZT1 , messed up sweet spot issues and giant slab of the pass through/psu meant it was far from ideal. 

Jump forwards a couple of years almost and now I am playing the same game on a truly portable , light  weight hmd with headtracking and in 1080p 3D ..using the Carl Zeiss Cinemizer OLED hmd. I chose a deliberately dark level to exploit  the OLED displays used in the hmd . At 1080p the hud text is clear and switching on the in game 3D sends the Cinemizer OLED into 3D mode without you having to adjust any settings on the breakout box. 

At 1080p in OLED 3D , you can see the shine on the black , Riddick would be proud ... the OLEDs are perfect for the high refresh rate we aim for in PC gaming . The game is running using a QX9775 CPU , XFX Radeon HD5970 Black Edition.  I can see every speck of dust , ember of flame , in 3D the lens smudges and flares sit separate to your in game weapon hands , with the screen stretching out with depth. 

If you are experienced with hmds , then you know that how they handle black is one of the major issues that users bring up. On the Cinemizer OLED it is near perfect, you can literally feel the dark, when you see me moving the fov around in game, I am sometimes trying to move out of the dark for real, because I can feel it, rather than mouse out of a dark area of a 2D screen. 

There are points where I am aiming in the game where it is all to easy. There is no drift or latency that you can perceive using the headtracker, just watch me actually play through a level and you will see. 

The immersion is second to none when playing a FPS game with a HMD you are totally isolated from the outside world . As for sound the Cinemizer has the most comfortable earbuds .. you never feel them , as you play and move around and actually play the game you do not feel the weight of the hmd , it is that light .. you can be doing this anywhere ..on a train , plane ..you know the drill. 

This is a capture of sustained gameplay using the Cinemizer OLED , I played in 3D but FRAPs captured it in 2D, which gives me an opportunity to annotate the video ..
